Cycling-Pogacar to skip Vuelta a Espana after 'demanding' Tour de France
(Reuters) -Tadej Pogacar will skip the Vuelta a Espana in order to rest after winning a fourth Tour de France title, the Slovenian said.
The 26-year-old UAE Team Emirates XRG rider sealed his Tour de France title on Sunday after three weeks of dominance, but said fatigue had crept in during the final days. His previous Tour de France titles came in 2020, 2021 and 2024.
Pogacar will return to action at the one-day races in Quebec and Montreal in September before shifting focus to the UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda, where he is the defending champion.
"After such a demanding Tour, we decided it was best to take a break," Pogacar said in a statement late on Tuesday.
"The Vuelta is of course a race I would dearly love to return to. I have fantastic memories there from 2019, but now the body is telling me to rest.
"I'm excited to go back to Canada; the races are tough but beautiful, and they fit my style well. I'll be aiming to be back racing well again for that part of the season and for the World Championships especially."
Pogacar is yet to win the Vuelta a Espana, having captured three stage wins and securing the young rider classification in his only appearance in 2019.
The Vuelta runs from August 23 to September 14.

Izzah geared up for new national record
KUALA LUMPUR: A bigger and stronger Izzah Izzati Asri is on course to set a new national record when she competes at the World Track Cycling Championships in Santiago, Chile on Oct 22-26. National track cycling team head coach Harnizam Basri said Izzah has gained considerable muscle mass in recent months and is able to push a bigger racing gear now. Harnizam is thus confident the 21-year-old will further lower her personal best over 200 metres, a key indicator of how strong a track sprinter is. "Yes that (new national record), is what she is aiming for," said Harnizam recently. "Izzah completed her hypertrophy phase a few weeks ago and has gained a couple of kilos of muscle. "She is 55 kilogrammes now which is what we had planned for her this season. We will look to increase her weight by a few more kg closer to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "The race gear she had been using previously feels too light for her now, which is a good sign. "We recently moved her up to a bigger race gear which she could use for the World Championships. It, however, depends on how well she can adapt to the new gear. "She is using it now in training as we work on her power and pace." Izzah is the current national record holder in the women's flying 200m time trial. She set the current national mark of 10.578s at the UCI Nations Cup in Konya, Turkiye in March. The Kedahan is expected to compete in the women's individual sprint, keirin and 1km time trial at the world meet in Chile. Izzah is also the national record holder in the 1km time trial (1:06.229s) which she set at the Asian Championships in Nilai in February.

Anastasija Sevastova ousts two-time defending champ Jessica Pegula in Montreal
MONTREAL: Anastasija Sevastova saved nine of 13 break points on Friday while recording a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal on Friday. Sevastova of Latvia had a first-serve percentage of 71 percent while rallying to upend the third-seeded Pegula. Sevastova, 35, had a hard time explaining what happened. "Somehow, I was down 2-0 in the second set and started to play better and better," Sevastova said. "Third set, I played really good. Just trying to stay on the court as long as possible." Pegula appeared to be sailing when she won eight of the first 11 games. But Sevastova won the next four games to jumpstart her comeback. After winning the second set, Sevastova lost the opening game of the third set before steamrolling Pegula the rest of the way. Pegula was perplexed over her collapse. "It was a strange match for me," Pegula said. "I felt like I was in complete control, and then I played a couple of terrible games." Sevastova was ranked as high as No. 11 in 2018 before injuries hampered her career. She was ranked No. 396 entering Friday's match. In 2018, Sevastova advanced to the US Open semifinals before losing to eventual runner-up Serena Williams. She will next face the winner of that 2018 US Open — Naomi Osaka.
