Oman recognized by WHO for eliminating artificial trans fats
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman today received a certificate of recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring its food products free of artificial trans fats. Oman is among nine countries worldwide and the second Arab country to achieve this achievement. This achievement reflects its commitment to improving quality of life, promoting health prevention, and raising public health indicators.
This came during the 78th World Health Assembly meeting, held in Geneva, Switzerland, which began today and will continue until May 27.
His Excellency Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health, received the certificate of recognition.
In a press statement, His Excellency Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health, said: "Eliminating artificial trans fats is a milestone in our commitment to promoting and protecting public health. We are proud to be among the nine leading countries globally and the second in the Arab world to implement this life-saving policy to eliminate this harmful component."
This achievement is the culmination of the Sultanate of Oman's tireless efforts to develop quality and safety standards in all areas that touch human health and enhance prevention for citizens and residents, in line with the strategic objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which aims to reach the ranks of developed countries through priorities that prioritize health.
This achievement is a result of the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and relevant authorities to ban the use of artificial trans fats in food products.
This year's World Health Assembly, held under the theme "One World for Health," will discuss several topics in which the Sultanate of Oman's delegation will participate, including the proposed program budget for the biennium 2026–2027 and the role of the Global Coordinating Mechanism for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases in the WHO's work on multi-stakeholder engagement in the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases: a report on the independent evaluation.
Discussions will address mental health and social communication, as well as global strategies and action plans due to expire within one year, including the Comprehensive Implementation Plan on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition 2021–2025, the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health, and the Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery 2021–2025.
The meeting will also address the issue of antimicrobial resistance, discuss the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body for the drafting and negotiation of a WHO convention, agreement, or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, and address the impact of climate change on health through discussion of the WHO Global Strategy on Environmental Health and Climate Change: The transformation needed to sustainably improve people's lives and well-being through healthy environments.
The meeting will review integrated emergency, critical, and surgical care to achieve universal health coverage and protection from health emergencies. It will also address substandard and falsified medical products, as well as global strategies and action plans due to expire within one year, in accordance with the Global Strategy for Digital Health 2020-2025.

Community initiative launched to raise awareness on drug abuse
Muscat: As part of a national community initiative to raise awareness about drug abuse and its dangers, the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali launched the 'Jabel Omrak' campaign under the auspices of Mohammed bin Humaid al Ghabshi, Wali of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali. The launch event was attended by members of the local health committee, officials and those active in public health and youth outreach efforts. The campaign comes as the wilayat's official entry in the nationwide community competition organised by the Ministry of Health, represented by the National Committee for Drug and Psychotropic Substance Prevention. The initiative seeks to engage all segments of society in tackling the growing challenges of drug abuse through awareness, education and collaboration. Al Ghabshi stressed the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the community. 'Preventing drug abuse is not the duty of institutions alone — it requires the active participation of families, educators, civil society and young people themselves,' he said. He commended the campaign's organisers for their commitment and emphasised the critical role of grassroots engagement in building a healthier society. The campaign's central goal is to foster a sustainable culture of awareness about the dangers of drug use. It also seeks to promote individual and collective responsibility, empower youth to make informed choices and build strong partnerships with government agencies, schools, healthcare institutions and civil society organisations. By encouraging early prevention and dialogue, 'Jabel 'Omrak' aspires to reduce the stigma around discussing addiction and mental health, while providing young people with the tools and support needed to make positive life decisions. The campaign will roll out a series of educational and interactive activities over the coming weeks. These will include lectures in schools and colleges, training workshops, public forums with addiction specialists and awareness campaigns across various platforms. Youth-centred events such as competitions, art showcases and theatre performances will also be organised to communicate preventive messages in engaging ways. The organising committee emphasised that the campaign will target a wide audience, with special focus on youth, students and vulnerable groups. A multi-platform strategy — combining face-to-face activities with digital outreach — will help expand the campaign's reach and accessibility.

'Your blood donation means life to others'
Muscat: June 14 is observed as World Donor Day and in Oman, the Department of Blood Bank Services under the Ministry of Health has been conducting a campaign on the importance of donating blood. Community drives were also organised on the same day. On this day, blood banks around the world celebrate the heroes of life who give hope with blood. The theme for World Blood Donor Day 2025 is 'Blood connects us all: share a blood donation, save a life.' 'With every bag of blood you donate, you give a new chance to three people eagerly awaiting hope and bring a smile to their families' faces,' stated the campaign from Khoula Hospital. More than 100 million donations are collected annually in 170 countries. The Sultanate of Oman is one of the leading countries in blood donation campaigns. 'The Sultanate of Oman is a pioneer in efforts to promote a culture of donation and enhance safe stocks,' stated Oman's Blood Bank Services. Regular donations help save lives, support medical operations and care for mothers and children. Sami al Zedjali, who has a career in the banking sector; and enjoys biking and travelling, has been donating blood for 20 years. 'It has become such a natural part of my life that I hardly think twice about it. What motivates me? Knowing that a small act on my part can literally save someone's life, even if I never meet them. There's a quiet joy in that,' he said. When asked what he would like to tell others, he replied, 'It's easier than you think (the needle pinch lasts seconds; the impact lasts a lifetime). Your blood is always needed — someone, somewhere, is praying for it right now. You'll walk out feeling lighter (in your heart, not just your veins!)." The campaign on Saturday emphasised that in every bag of blood you donate, you give a new chance to three people eagerly awaiting hope and draw a smile on the faces of their families. There are 12,700 donation centres worldwide, but there is always a demand. Joining in the initiative, the Indian Social Club conducted a blood donation drive at the central blood bank in the Wilayat of Bausher; and the campaign was inaugurated by G V Srinivas, Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman. Earlier this month, the Central Blood Bank announced that it needed 12 platelet donors to meet the needs of patients and support health institutions. Platelet donation is a new hope for patients who need you. Some of the conditions that have to be considered before donating blood are the facts that the weight of the donor must not be less than 50 kg, the donor's age must be between 18 and 65 years old; and blood pressure and hemoglobin must be within the normal range. The blood bank is open for donors from Saturday to Thursday from 8 am to 8 pm; and on Friday from 8 am to 2 pm.

Oman's minister sheds light on one health policy in Tunis
Tunis: Oman participated on Saturday in the activities of the Regional Conference for One Health for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region hosted by the Tunisian Republic. The Sultanate participated as guest of honour by an official delegation chaired by Dr. Hilal bin Ali bin Hilal Al Sabti, Minister of Health. Dr. Al Sabti gave a speech in which he reviewed the efforts of the Sultanate of Oman in implementing the one health policy. He said that the conference comes at a significant time and represents a vital platform for exchange of expertise and optimal practices which contributes to boosting the collective efforts and regional and international cooperation in the field. In his speech, the minister shed light on the Sultanate's efforts in implementing the one health policy. He added that the Sultanate has established several national mechanisms supportive to the one health policy and formed teams in various sectors to further cement integration between the various sectors. The minister also described the leading role the Sultanate has played in the international arena in the antimicrobial resistance dossier by hosting the third high- level international ministerial meeting for the first time in the MENA region in Muscat in 2022. He said that the Muscat conference and its final declaration signed by 47 countries represents the foundation for the preparations for the high-level meeting in the UN to discuss the microbes' resistance issue held in New York on 26 September 2024. The Minister also pointed out that the Sultanate of Oman has launched the carbon neutrality (zero carbon) project, which represents a strategic pillar supportive to environmental health. The conference discussed a number of issues within the one health framework such as the basic principles and the global significance of the issue and implementation of the one health method and protection of nature under climate change conditions among other issues.
