HONOLULU (KHON2) – According to the Better Business Bureau, a new report shows that identity theft is becoming a more common issue impacting individuals, families, and businesses.
Hawaiʻi International Film Festival returns, kicking off with 'The Wedding Banquet' remake
The nonprofit's report reveals that scammers are leveraging new technologies and shady chat forums to more easily steal and sell your important information.
BBB's Cameron Nakashima says they're seeing that nearly every scam today involves some level of identity or information theft – and what's more troubling is that victims often don't even realize their personal information has been compromised.Their new BBB study shows that A.I. tools and dark web marketplaces and chatrooms are fueling this trend. Since 2021, over 16,000 reports of identity theft have come into BBB's Scam Tracker – 84 of those are from Hawaii.
Nakashima says entirely avoiding identity theft may not be realistic – there are some factors beyond your control, but minimizing risk is something you can control:

Alphabet's Google Offers Buyouts to U.S. Staff Amid AI Push

Tech giant Alphabet (GOOGL) is offering buyouts to U.S. employees within some of its core teams. Google sent an internal memo yesterday informing staff about the buyouts, which apply to its Knowledge and Information (K&I), central engineering, marketing, research, and communications teams. Meanwhile, employees from DeepMind, Google Cloud, YouTube, and central ad sales are excluded from the buyout offer. Confident Investing Starts Here: Google is focused on ramping up its artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions and seeks to reduce costs and avoid ugly layoffs through these measures. Alphabet has set a massive $75 billion capex budget for AI infrastructure this year. The buyouts come as a prelude to potential layoffs, as earlier experiences have shown that employees prefer being offered buyouts rather than being laid off instantly. Google Tightens Return-to-Office Policy with Buyouts Along with the buyouts, Google has also mandated that employees who live near the office return to a hybrid work model. A buyout is a Voluntary Exit Program (VEP) offered to certain employees, allowing them to choose whether or not to accept the offer. In its memo, Google said that employees who are excited about their work and feel energized and motivated are encouraged to continue working at the company. In contrast, those 'having difficulty meeting the expectations of your role' could opt to take the package. Google is reportedly offering staff up to 14 weeks of severance, and the offer will be available through July 1. Notably, Google's K&I team includes some of its most popular functions, including those of Search, Ads, and Commerce teams. The decision to cut staff within the K&I team could be related to Google's loss in a landmark antitrust case alleging dominance in Search and Ad Tech. Google awaits the remedial decision in both cases, with one possible outcome being the divestiture of both units. Google resorted to mass layoffs in 2023, cutting roughly 6% of its workforce. The company faced severe criticism for this step and has since decided to rely on VEPs or buyouts for future workforce reductions. Until now, Google has downsized staff in its Pixel, Chrome, Android, Assistant, HR, Finance, and Legal teams. It remains to be seen whether Google undertakes another round of layoffs from these teams in the future. Is GOOGL Stock a Buy or Sell? On TipRanks, GOOGL stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 27 Buys and nine Hold ratings. Also, the average Alphabet price target of $198.50 implies 11.1% upside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, GOOGL stock has lost 5.4%.

Laced and lethal: Fentanyl, meth lead death toll

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Methamphetamine and fentanyl are the deadliest drugs on the streets today, according to Gary Yabuta, the executive director of Hawaii High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area or HIDTA. HPD shares fentanyl-related arrests and recovery stats for May But the danger doesn't stop there. Many illegal drugs are now laced with unknown mixtures, mystery cocktails that can kill in minutes. Xylazine, bromazalam and kratom are emerging new drugs often mixed with other illicit drugs to intensify or prolong the high, according to Gary Yabuta, executive director for Hawaii High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA). 'We're seeing a lot of cocktails out there,' Yabuta explained. 'Bromazalam is huge in the mainland. So we're having to keep a close eye on that.' He said xylazine is already linked to seven overdose deaths in the state over the past two years. But the biggest killers remain fentanyl and methamphetamine. They are the most lethal, driving the epidemic.'Those are our two biggest drug threats here in Hawaii,' Yabuta said. 'Methamphetamine (deaths) rose dramatically in 2024 and primarily here in the City and County of Honolulu, that's where we're seeing the increase. Meth is back, and its back very very strong.' According to Yabuta, 260 deaths were linked to meth in 2024, compared to 222 the previous year. Fatalities jumped 26% on Oahu (142=2023 compared to 179=2024). But overall, he said fentanyl overdose deaths dipped in 2024 (107 in 2023 compared to 103 in 2024). Only Oahu saw an uptick in overdose fatalities in 2024 (55 in 2023 compared to 70 in 2024). 'We're intercepting a lot of methamphetamine, a lot of fentanyl pills,' Yabuta explained. 'It's out there and we're just getting the tip of the iceberg. However, we're doing everything we can.' The Hawaii Health Harm and Reduction Center works to combat substance abuse. Nikos Leverenz, HHHRC Policy Manager, said the statistics are sobering. 'We need to intensify harm reduction efforts and access to community-based treatment,' he said. 'Fundamentally, every overdose death is a policy failure.' Leverenz said investing in outpatient community-based treatment can save lives. 'We're fortunate to have a governor who's a medical doctor who understands that prevention works, who understands that treatment works,' he added. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news But he said he worries about how potential funding cuts will impact their work and those struggling with addiction. 'It's certainly very foreseeable that if the federal government cuts funding for community-based drug treatment, then more people will overdose and more people will die. That's the bottom line.'
