Raymond van Barneveld has received special dispensation to compete in a non-PDC event.
The darts community was taken aback this week when the Dutch icon, 58, revealed he had accepted a wildcard invite to participate in the World Seniors Champion of Champions tournament at the end of June. Normally, players with PDC Tour Cards are banned from featuring in TV or streamed competitions that aren't managed by the PDC.
Therefore, Van Barneveld's involvement in the World Seniors event led to speculation over his future at the top level. But the five-time world champion is still part of the PDC, which has sanctioned his participation in the Champion of Champions, which will be held at the MODUS Live Lounge in Portsmouth on June 29.
When approached, the PDC confirmed: "Raymond has asked for, and been granted, permission to play in the event."
Meanwhile, Jason Francis, chairman of World Seniors Darts, confirmed on social media that van Barneveld had adhered to proper protocols. He shared on X: "RVB followed the correct procedures, and permission was granted. It's all good."
In response to a question from former world champion Keith Deller about whether other PDC players could follow suit, Francis added: "The PDC contract allows players to apply for permission. In this case [we're] delighted it's been granted for @Raybar180 to play as he is a legend and a fantastic addition but 11 others will want to prove a point so should be fantastic competition. Darts is the winner here."

Van Barneveld will renew his rivalries with the likes of Simon Whitlock, Steve Beaton and Mervyn King, who will also be part of the 12-player Champion of Champions field. He said: "I am looking forward to playing in this event.
"The sport has always loved big characters, and World Seniors Darts have brought them back, with most still playing to a high standard. They have a loyal crowd, and the popularity for the Seniors seems to grow and grow. I'm looking forward to catching up with the old faces of the sport, especially from my BDO era."
He insists he won't take his opponents lightly, adding: "I'm not coming over to Portsmouth thinking this will be easy. I will be giving my full respect to all of the players involved, and I will be preparing hard for this tournament.

"With players like Simon Whitlock, Steve Beaton, and Mervyn King - who've just stepped off the pro tour - plus Seniors World Champions like John Henderson, Robert Thornton and Ross Montgomery, it's going to be a real battle."

There is no suggestion that Van Barneveld is planning to leave the PDC Tour, and he is on course to be part of the field at next month's PDC World Matchplay at Blackpool's Winter Gardens.
But his exception to play in the Champion of Champions does potentially open the door to lower-ranked PDC players and stars of Van Barneveld's age to play in the MODUS Super Series and World Seniors events.

Newbridge darts prodigies storm to European stage gold
Abbie Brewster and Yazmine Ruck-Havard, who both train at the Calstep Darts Wales Academy in Newbridge, recently travelled to the Dutch city of Assen to represent Wales in the Winmau WDF Europe Cup Youth tournament. Over 150 youth players from across Europe competed in the tournament in singles, pairs, and team events. Brewster and Ruck-Harvard were selected to represent Wales alongside four other players – Joseph Flenley, Joshua Powell, Jenson Ellaway, and captain Lloyd Sterio. Taking part in the Girls' Pairs event, Brewster and Ruck-Harvard held their nerve in a match which went down to tense deciding leg and won gold, beating the Hungarian duo Krisztina Turai and Hanna Rábaközi 4-3 in the final. Yazmine Ruck-Harvard (L) and Abbie Brewster (R) after winning the Girls' Pairs event at the WDF Europe Cup Youth (Image: Selina Brewster) It was the first time that Wales had made the final in 15 years, taking their number of wins in the event to five – after winning in 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2010. The girls made the final after seeing off tough competition in both the group and knock-out stages. After making it out of the group, the Welsh pair took on and defeated Denmark 3-0 in the quarter-finals, before a hotly contested match against hosts the Netherlands in which Wales emerged victorious. The Welsh girls' team also finished third overall in the cup, while the boys' team placed 7th overall. The boys' duo, Joseph Flenley and Jenson Ellaway, also took home bronze in the Pairs event. Selina Brewster, Abbie's mother, told the Argus: 'Me and the whole family are so proud of Abbie. She's overcome so much and to have a gold medal at the end of her youth era is fantastic. The team gelled so well, and I'm so proud of them all.' Abbie, who is aged 18, started playing darts when she was 11, a hobby that began on her dad's dartboard at home. 'Her dad played in the house, and she was on the board with him at every opportunity,' Selina said, 'We came across the local darts academy at the Labour Club in Newbridge, which she has attended ever since.' Abbie's fated discovery of her love of darts has not gone unnoticed. Since picking up her first set of arrows, Abbie has been selected to play for Gwent Youth County, currently captaining their Under 21s Girls' team. This year's Europe Cup wasn't Abbie's first foray into the competition world either. She was first selected to play for Team Wales in 2023, and has since taken part in both the Tri Nations Darts tournaments and the Europe Cup. Team Wales at the WDF Europe Couth Youth in Assen (Image: Selina Brewster) Abbie told the Argus: 'It's an amazing experience and opportunity [to represent your country], and I feel proud to wear the Welsh shirt. It was an honour to be selected for the third year running. 'It was a bit nervy on stage, especially in the last leg where it could have gone either way, but I was so happy to have got a win with Yazmine and it meant so much to me as it was my last youth competition.' While the status of darts has undoubtedly seen a resurgence in recent years following the roaring success of young darts sensation Luke Littler, Abbie's mother also added how important it is to see female players take to the oche. 'It is great to see the female players having their own tournaments and being recognised for their own talents and equal opportunities', Selina said. Now that Abbie has turned 18, she will move out of the Youth section with the hope to take part in more Senior tournaments and potentially the Women's Series in the future. Aberdeen FC transfer latest: Dons revive interest in striker Marko Lazetic
Aberdeen have revived their interest in AC Milan striker Marko Lazetic. The Dons were scuppered in a move to bring the Serbian 6ft4in striker to Pittodrie in January on loan due to red tape, but Lazetic is back on their radar. Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin is determined to add the forward to his squad and Milan are open to letting Lazetic move on if they can negotiate a sell-on clause. Lazetic joined Milan five days after his 18th birthday in 2022 from Red Star Belgrade and has had loan spells at SCR Altach in Austria, Dutch side Fortuna Sittard and, most recently, FK TSC Backa Topola in his homeland in Serbia. The 21-year-old has one year remaining on his contract with the Italian giants, but the Dons hope they can agree a deal to bring the striker to Scotland. Thelin has made seven signings so far this summer but is still looking to bolster his squad before the close of the transfer window with a striker and a left winger top of the list of his priorities.
