Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were involved in a collision towards the end of the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.
McLaren Racing had a mixed outing at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday with one of their drivers crashing out after colliding with his teammate towards the end of the race. Lando Norris ended up hitting the back of Oscar Piastri's car during the 67th lap of the 70-lap race after misjudging the space available as he went on the attack mode only for his front wing get demolished.
The move ended Norris' race with his mangled car being lifted off the track resulting in the deployment of a safety car. Piastri though continued and finished fourth as Merecedes driver George Russell emerged victorious ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli.
Piastri was quick to acknowledge his error and apologised to his teammate.
'There's no one to blame but myself, so I apologise to the whole team and to Oscar as well for attempting something a bit too silly. Glad I didn't ruin his race and yeah apologies to the team," Norris said.
The Briton added that it was 'more than silly… but that's racing and just silly on my part. So I'll go to bed tonight, apologise to everyone and I will crack on."
Piastri has accepted the apology.
'It's not ideal for anyone. I've not actually seen the incident, so I don't know exactly what happened, but if Lando has taken full responsibility then that's how it goes I guess. It was just a bit of a tricky race in general and not an ideal finish," he said.
The fourth spot though helped Piastri extend his championship lead to 22 points over teammate Norris.
'For me, this weekend wasn't good enough and it's still far too early to think that that is an comfortable advantage or anything like that. There's a long way to go in the season and we've got to try and improve on the whole," Piastri said.
Meanwhile, Russell is the fourth different winner this season after Norris, Piastri and defending champions Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton ‘devastated' after killing groundhog during Canadian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton missed out on a podium finish in Montreal as George Russell finished in first position at the Canadian Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen came second, followed by Mercedes' AK Antonelli in third position. Ferrari's Hamilton, on the other hand, came sixth, and was also left devastated as after the race he was informed that he hit a groundhog. According to Hamilton, the incident probably took place around Lap 12, and also resulted in car damage. The groundhogs have a large population in Montreal's Ile Notre-Dame, where the Circuit Giles Villeneuve is located. According to multiple media reports, the groundhog was killed by Hamilton's car, as it went over the rodent, which belongs to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Brit said, 'I got a good start [to the race], held position, I was holding onto the group and managing tyres well, so I was feeling optimistic.' 'Then, and I didn't see it happen, but I heard I hit a groundhog. 'That's devastating, I love animals and that's so, so sad. That's never happened to me here before. 'But the floor, the right side, there's a hole in it and all the vanes are all gone.' It was evident that Hamilton's car was damaged on the underside, as he slipped from fifth position to seventh. He eventually finished in sixth position, after Lando Norris retired due to a collision. Hamilton's car faced issues later, as revealed by the British driver. He said, 'Given that and we had a brake issue halfway through as well, and we stayed out probably too long after the first stop and came out behind traffic and it just went from one thing to another.' 'So I'm happy I could just finish, especially with the brake issue I had. 'We're really in need of an upgrade and there's a lot of things that need to change before we can fight at the front,' he added.

Canadian GP drama: Russell wins, McLarens tangle, verstappen Second

George Russell won his first race of the Formula 1 season as the Mercedes driver held off defending race winner Max Verstappen at the Canadian Grand Prix. It was the fourth victory of Russell's career, and the race ended under yellow when McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris staged a wheel-to-wheel late battle that ended with Norris hitting the wall. It's amazing to be back on the top step, Russell said. I felt last year was a victory lost, so to get the victory and see (teammate) Kimi (Antonelli) on the podium, too, is an amazing day for the team. I think it shows the strength of our cars in the cooler conditions, so let's see in the coming races. Russell started on pole for the second consecutive year in Montreal and held the advantage for most of the race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The British driver became the fourth race winner this year, joining points leader leader Piastri, Norris and Verstappen, the four-time reigning F1 champion. Verstappen, who has one more race to go before points drop off his license and eliminate the possibility of a one-race suspension, was satisfied with his second-place finish. Was quite a good race, even though in the first two stints we were struggling with the tires, the Dutchman said. We hung in there in the final stint. That was the maximum we could have achieved today. Mercedes rookie Antonelli finished third behind Verstappen for his first F1 podium. A really good day. It was absolutely victory on merit, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said. "We controlled the race all the way. George drove brilliantly and Kimi didn't crack under pressure, even with the McLaren right behind him. It's been a while since we've had two cars on the podium with a win and that's why everyone is delighted. The two McLarens came together when Norris, then in fifth, attempted to pass Piastri multiple times on the 67th lap out of 70. Norris ultimately ran into Piastri and bounced into the wall, drawing a safety car for the final laps. I was defending the inside, then I felt a small touch, Piastri said. That's all I've got to go on at the moment. It's a shame for the team. Norris received a 5-second penalty for contact with Piastri after the race and took responsibility. I just went for it. I thought Oscar would move a bit more to the right, not leave a gap, Norris said. I wasn't expecting anything easy from him. But in the end, it was all my mistake. I take full blame and I want to apologize to my whole team and to Oscar for attempting something like that. Piastri finished fourth, ending an eight-race podium streak dating back to the second race of the season. McLaren as a team failed to reach the top three for the first time this year. We never want to see a McLaren car involved in an accident and definitely not contact between our two cars, team principal Andrea Stella said. "This is a situation we know is not acceptable. At the same time, we appreciate that Lando immediately owned it. He raised his hand, as you should, and apologized to the team. For us, that sort of resets the situation. I'm sure there's an important learning point for him from this race. He's paid a price the championship and we value the way he handled it. Piastri arrived in Montreal the 10th of 24 stops this season with a 10-point lead over Norris amid a dominant season for the papaya-colored cars. The Australian driver extended his advantage to 22 points over his British teammate. Verstappen, ranked third in the drivers' championship, now trails Norris by 21 points. A race win is worth 25. Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were fifth and sixth. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, Haas' Esteban Ocon and Williams' Carlos Sainz Jr. rounded out the top 10. Leclerc, after holding off on a second pit stop, was the leader until the 54th lap when he finally swapped tires. That set up a five-man race to the finish involving Russell, Verstappen, Antonelli, Piastri and Norris in the final 16 laps. A little more than five seconds separated the drivers. Lance Stroll, the lone Canadian on the 20-driver grid, finished 17th after starting 18th. The Aston Martin driver received a 10-second penalty for forcing Alpine's Pierre Gasly off the track on the 47th lap. The Canadian GP returns to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve next year. The next F1 race is the Austrian Grand Prix on June 29.

George Russell wins F1 Canadian GP as Norris-Piastri clash shakes up title fight

Toronto, June 16 (UNI) George Russell claimed Mercedes' first win of the season with a commanding drive from pole position in Montreal, but the biggest drama came behind as McLaren teammates and title rivals Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collided late in the race. The contact occurred on lap 67 of 70 as Norris attempted to overtake Piastri for fourth. The Briton misjudged a move on the pit straight and ran into the back of the Australian's car. Norris retired on the spot with front suspension damage, while Piastri continued to finish fourth behind Russell, Red Bull's Max Verstappen and the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli. The race ended under the safety car. Norris immediately took full responsibility over team radio: "It's all my bad, all my fault. Unlucky, sorry. Stupid from me." The incident, reminiscent of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button's infamous clash at the same point in 2011, dealt a blow to Norris' title challenge. Piastri's points lead over his teammate now stands at 22 points, with Verstappen a further 21 points behind. Until the clash, Norris had run a good race from seventh on the grid on an inverted tyre strategy. Having gained on Piastri, the Briton surprised his teammate on lap 66 with a pass into the hairpin, but Piastri regained the position with a cut-back down the straight. As Norris aimed to slingshot past on the pit straight, he ran out of room and his front wing broke against the rear of Piastri's car. While McLaren were left to rue the first clash between their two drivers this season, Russell delivered a composed and clinical performance out front. Having taken a surprise pole position in Saturday's qualifying session, he converted it into victory with a strong start and controlled the pace throughout the afternoon. Despite closing the gap in the closing laps, Verstappen never truly threatened. Mercedes, however, may face a post-race protest from Red Bull, who allege Russell drove erratically under the safety car. Behind them, 18-year-old Antonelli secured his maiden F1 podium in just his tenth Grand Prix. The Italian overtook Piastri for third on the opening lap and showed maturity in defending the final podium place before Norris' crash neutralized the race. Ferrari endured a frustrating day. Charles Leclerc finished a distant fifth after publicly questioning the team's strategy to make two pit stops instead of just one. Teammate Hamilton finished a low-key sixth, although the Briton's pace was affected by an early collision with a groundhog, which damaged his floor and cost him some downforce. Fernando Alonso continued Aston Martin's mini-revival with a solid seventh place, followed by Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in eighth. Esteban Ocon secured ninth for Haas, and Carlos Sainz took the final point after executing a well-managed one-stop strategy. The 11th round of the 2025 Formula 1 season is the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, where Russell won last year after Norris and Verstappen clashed while battling for the lead.
