PharmaJet presentation will highlight the results of recent immunization studies using needle-free intradermal (ID) delivery for polio immunization campaigns.
Data reinforces how increased coverage, decreased cost, and acceptability can be achieved with vaccines administered with the Tropis® ID System, the first and only needle-free ID delivery technology to achieve WHO prequalification.
PharmaJet®, a company that strives to improve the performance and outcomes of injectables with its enabling technology, today announced that they will share the latest routine immunization study results at the 61st Annual Medical Conference and International Health Exhibition to be held on February 21-22, 2025 at the Haile Grand in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The presentation, entitled Intradermal needle-free vaccine delivery to reduce Ethiopia's immunization costs and improve coverage, will be presented by Paul LaBarre, Vice President Global Business Development, PharmaJet. This event will bring together physicians from across the nation, along with representatives from Ethiopian Medical Association chapter offices, medical specialty societies, medical schools, the Ministries of Health (MoH) and Education, sister health professional associations, and partners.
Intradermal (ID) vaccine administration can enable new vaccine strategies that leverage improved cross-protection, duration of immune response, and mucosal immunity. However, administration to the ID space has been difficult using traditional needle and syringe. Needle-free administration using the PharmaJet Tropis® ID System facilitates ID delivery with improved acceptability and speed of administration. Tropis, which has been used to administer polio vaccinations to more than 10 million children, is the first and only needle-free ID delivery technology to achieve WHO prequalification.
A recent randomized controlled implementation study in Nigeria1 evaluated the impact on coverage, costs, and acceptability of intradermal fractional inactivated poliovirus vaccine (fIPV) administration using the Tropis compared to the standard of care (SoC – full-dose, IPV intramuscular delivery with needle and syringe). The study demonstrated: Increased coverage : Among those vaccinated with Tropis, IPV2 coverage was 11.2% higher compared to the SoC.
: Among those vaccinated with Tropis, IPV2 coverage was 11.2% higher compared to the SoC. Decreased total immunization costs: Incremental savings with needle-free could range from $0.07 to $1.00 per dose administered across evaluated scenarios with up to 47% total immunization cost savings compared to SoC at full scale.
Incremental savings with needle-free could range from $0.07 to $1.00 per dose administered across evaluated scenarios with up to 47% total immunization cost savings compared to SoC at full scale. High acceptability: 94% caregivers reported high acceptability of Tropis. Healthcare worker preference for Tropis over the SoC was 95%. Tropis reduced administration time by five seconds on average compared to the SoC.
'The Nigeria study results demonstrate how using Tropis for routine immunization programs can provide significant benefits at all levels of the healthcare system,' said Paul LaBarre, Vice President of Global Business Development, PharmaJet. 'Leveraging recent evidence from Tropis use in campaigns and routine immunization in Pakistan,2 Somalia,3 and Nigeria,4 we look forward to working with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and other African partners to assess the benefits needle-free ID delivery can provide for their immunization programs.'

Health Ministry Eliminates Medical Paper Records

The announcement was made at a ceremony recognising Egypt as the first in the region to meet WHO's hepatitis B control target. Jun 04, 2025 The Ministry of Health and Population has announced the complete elimination of paper records across all health offices, marking a step in Egypt's healthcare digital transformation. Deputy Minister Dr. Amr Qandil confirmed that a unified digital system has been rolled out across health and vaccination offices nationwide, in order to improve service delivery and administrative efficiency. As part of the new system, parents receive automated SMS reminders 48 hours before scheduled vaccination appointments. The ministry currently operates around 5,300 vaccination points across the country, administering approximately 65 million doses annually. These include vaccinations for newborns, schoolchildren, healthcare workers, high-risk groups such as dialysis patients, and refugees. The announcement was made during a ceremony celebrating Egypt's achievement in hepatitis B control, where the country was recognised as the first in the Eastern Mediterranean region to meet the World Health Organization's target of reducing prevalence below 1% among children aged five and older. This digital shift is part of the broader national strategy to integrate technology into public health infrastructure and expand access to comprehensive healthcare services.

Egypt's pharmaceutical market hits EGP 309bn in 2024, marking 43% growth

Egypt's pharmaceutical market recorded EGP 309bn in sales in 2024, up from EGP 216bn in 2023—reflecting a 43% year-on-year increase, according to Ali Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA). The announcement came during the EDA's 15th Board of Directors meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Mohamed El-Khatib, and Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, alongside other senior officials. The meeting reviewed several strategic updates, including the latest activities of the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Pharmacopeia and progress in digital transformation across the Authority. These digital initiatives aim to enhance service delivery efficiency and strengthen the institutional work environment. A key highlight of the meeting was the EDA's continued success in gaining international accreditation. In December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded the Authority Maturity Level 3 status in the field of medicines—an achievement that follows its earlier Maturity Level 3 accreditation for vaccines in March 2022. EDA laboratories have also been accredited by both the WHO and the European Union, a milestone that positions them as globally recognized reference labs. The Authority's growing international presence was further underscored by its contributions to regulatory capacity-building programs across the Arab and African regions. With WHO Maturity Level 3 recognition in both medicine and vaccine regulation, the EDA has assumed a leading role in supporting regulatory system development throughout Africa. The African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) has selected EDA's Continuing Professional Development Center as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE). Under this designation, the Authority has conducted 12 international training programs for countries including Libya, Yemen, Ghana, and Algeria. Additionally, the meeting showcased progress in EDA's internship programs, including the pilot launch of a new Learning Management System (LMS) platform aimed at enhancing professional training and knowledge transfer.

Egypt becomes first country in Eastern Mediterranean to meet WHO target for hepatitis B control

Egypt has become the first country in the World Health Organization's Eastern Mediterranean Region to meet the WHO target for hepatitis B control, a milestone achievement officially recognized during a ceremony held in Cairo on Sunday. At the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar received a formal certificate from WHO, confirming Egypt's success in achieving the benchmark for reducing hepatitis B prevalence among children and maintaining sustained vaccine coverage. According to national surveys conducted between 2008 and 2024, hepatitis B prevalence among individuals under 60 has declined by 15% since 2015, while rates among children under ten have dropped by 50%. Notably, prevalence among children under five now stands at below 1%—the threshold established by WHO for hepatitis B control. WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhy, praised Egypt's public health infrastructure and long-standing commitment to immunization. She highlighted that Egypt has maintained over 90% coverage of the hepatitis B third-dose vaccine for more than a decade, as well as consistent coverage of the birth dose for five consecutive years. 'This is a turning point in Egypt's healthcare journey,' said Abdel Ghaffar. 'It reflects our national commitment to prevention, immunization, and universal health coverage, in alignment with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi's vision for health security.' The success was largely driven by Egypt's Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), which achieved over 95% vaccine coverage, providing free hepatitis B vaccines to all newborns—Egyptian and non-Egyptian alike. The program also ensures immediate birth doses and immunoglobulin for infants born to hepatitis B-positive mothers. Egypt also expanded immunization access to high-risk populations, including healthcare workers, dialysis patients, people living with HIV, and household contacts of hepatitis B carriers. These efforts were supported by upgrades to the digital infrastructure that improved vaccine tracking, reduced waste, and ensured equitable service delivery across the country. WHO Representative in Egypt, Naeema Al-Gasseer, commended Egypt for its technical capacity and long-term planning. 'Egypt fully deserves this recognition. It is a testament to what can be achieved through coordinated health policy and sustained investment in public health.' Beyond immunization, the Ministry of Health launched the Egyptian Vaccine Manufacturers Alliance (EVMA) to localize vaccine production and strengthen domestic supply chain resilience, a key pillar in Egypt's drive toward health system sustainability. Hesham Sateet, Head of the Unified Procurement Authority, emphasized the importance of securing vaccines and medical supplies through transparent, efficient mechanisms. 'This achievement would not have been possible without the full backing of Egypt's political leadership and the close coordination among state institutions,' he said. Ali El-Ghamrawy, President of the Egyptian Drug Authority, added that local manufacturing and regulatory governance are central to Egypt's broader health strategy, which is aligned with Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 'The Egyptian experience proves that with strategic planning, institutional coordination, and political will, even complex public health challenges can be overcome,' Abdel Ghaffar concluded, expressing gratitude to frontline health workers and international partners who supported Egypt's journey.
