Andal Jayanti 2025: Date, Puja Rituals and Significance of Aadi Pooram

Andal Jayanti 2025: The auspicious day of Aadi Pooram, also called Andal Jayanti, honors Goddess Andal, who is believed to be a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi. Andal Jayanti is celebrated during the Tamil month of Aadi and is observed under Pooram Nakshatra, one of the 27 Nakshatras. Andal Jayanti is being observed today, July 28, 2025, this year. Andal Jayanti 2025: Significance The Tamil community holds a great religious significance of Andal Jayanti. The Goddess Laxmi is honored on this day. Shakti, or divine energy, is the only focus of the month of Aadi, and it is a unique and potent energy. In order to bless her followers, the goddess also comes to earth. It is believed that Andal is a manifestation of the goddess Lakshmi. Andal refers to a young girl who became a saint by making the Lord (Vishnu) her lover. In South India, this event is primarily observed during Pooram Nakshatra. With great fervor and commitment, devotees pray to Goddess Andal. She is a manifestation of Goddess Laxmi, and Tamil Nadu's Lord Vishnu Temples celebrate the festival of Aadi Pooram. Goddess Andal became the wife of Lord Shri Ranganatha after years of worshiping him and pleasing him with her devotion to him, Andal Jayanti is celebrated at Shri Ranganatha Temple. This temple receives a lot of devotees who come to pray to the Goddess. Andal Jayanti 2025: Story Scripture states that there once was a saint by the name of Periyalwar of Srivilliputhur who was childless. He prayed to Lord Ranganatha and Goddess Laxmi for the child because he was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. After a while, he discovered a young girl as he was plow-ing the land, and Goddess Laxmi emerged as a child. He saw the child as a gift from God. Since this happened during the month of Aadi on the day of Pooram, it is known as Aadi Pooram. He never ceased to worship the Lord with all of his heart and soul. In order to present Shri Ranganatha with a garland made of Tulsi leaves, her daughter Andal would first wear it in secret. Periyalwar once reprimanded his daughter for wearing the garland covertly before presenting it to the Lord. After making another new garland for Shri Ranganatha, he offered it to the Lord, but it kept falling off his neck despite his repeated attempts. After he prayed to the Lord, Lord Ranganatha appeared before him and clarified that Andal is a manifestation of the Goddess Laxmi, and that he would only wear the garland if Andal would wear this . Goddess Andal wrote a great deal of music for Lord Ranganatha. Thiruppavai and Nachiyar Thirumozhi are two well-known pieces. Andal Jayanti 2025: Celebration Many followers travel to different temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and this festival is celebrated with a lot of fanfare. Srivilliputhut in the Virudhunara District hosts the car festival, which is regarded as a significant occasion. Additionally, devotees worship Goddess Aandal at the Shri Ranganatha temple. Along with other offerings, they also serve coconut and bhog prasadam. Mantra Om Mahalaxmi Namo Namah..!! Om Namo Bhagvate Vasudevaye..!!

A Gandhian turns old clothes into dignity for the needy through ‘Gandhiji Bank'

KHAMMAM: What happens to clothes that no longer spark joy or fit into our lives? While some trade them for steel utensils, in Madhira, they become sacred offerings. Guided by the belief that serving humanity is serving God, Lanka Kondayya, a Gandhian in action, has transformed his home on Azad Road into the soul of the Mahatma Gandhi Free Old Clothes Centre, also known as the 'Gandhiji Bank'. Every Sunday, his residence hums with the energy of a tribal market, but instead of goods for sale, it's compassion on display. Donors stream in from Madhira and neighbouring areas, carrying bundles of used clothes. Some drop them off; others simply call, and Kondayya, along with volunteers, collects them. These clothes are then distributed to the poor, the sick, and beggars who arrive at his doorstep. For the elderly, widows and the disabled, he personally delivers the clothes to their homes. Kondayya, a government health supervisor by profession, devotes his holidays and free time to this cause. Speaking to TNIE, Kondayya, popularly known as Asha Mitra, says, 'I once came across a child who didn't have any clothes. I felt terrible and immediately offered to bring him some from my home. But what he said stayed with me: 'You will help me, but what about the others? How will they manage?' After that, I started noticing patterns. During my work-related travels, I saw thousands of people without food or clothing. I couldn't unsee it. That's when I decided to do something. I tried to inculcate the values and teachings of a great man like Mahatma Gandhi in my mission.'

No fellowship amount for seven months, charge PhD scholars in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Due to technical issues, around 12 scholars pursuing PhD programmes at Government Arts College (Autonomous) in Coimbatore have not received their Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) amount for the past seven months. Scholars raised concerns that they would have to spend their own money for research, attending seminars, and purchasing chemicals. A PhD scholar told TNIE that over ten scholars in the science and arts departments who cleared the JRF of UGC NET are currently pursuing their PhD programmes. "Since January, we have not received the monthly fellowship amount of Rs 35,000. Although we complained several times, the college administration simply states they are taking steps to resolve the issue, without explaining the reason for the delay," she said. She expressed concern that without the fellowship amount, they have been forced to use their own money for research activities, seminar participation, and chemical acquisitions, adding that they were unable to meet their expenses. She said that this issue is only in this college, and she urged officials to take immediate action. According to sources from the college, the fellowship amount can only be approved for scholars by the nodal officer, who checks monthly research activities using the Scholarship and Fellowship Management Portal (SFMP). Last December, the nodal officer from the mathematics department was replaced by one from the Tamil department. However, the college administration should have obtained formal approval from the UGC by sending a request letter before making this change. The administration failed to do this, making the new nodal officer unable to login to SFMP. After that, the administration allegedly requested the UGC to allow the new nodal officer to log in through mail. Even though the nodal officer received a new login ID and password from UGC for the portal a few months ago, she has been unable to log in due to a technical issue. The administration allegedly decided to send a teaching faculty member to UGC's office at New Delhi directly to resolve this issue," sources added. When contacted, College Principal MR Yezhili told TNIE that they are taking steps to ensure scholars receive their fellowship amount soon.
