At just nine, she dominated the national circuit, winning six gold medals in as many events. By the age of 12, she had qualified for senior-level competitions, earning a place in the 1982 Commonwealth Games relay team.In the mid-1980s, Chowdhury set national records in the 100 m butterfly (1:05.27) and 200 m butterfly (2:19.60) at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. She transitioned to marathon swimming in 1989, famously crossing the English Channel twice—first in 1989 and again in 1999. Amongst her other feats are winning the 81 km Murshidabad swim in 1996 and crossing the Palk Strait in 2004 in about 14 hours.In 2005, she became the first woman to swim across sea channels on five continents, including the Strait of Gibraltar, Cook Strait, Catalina Channel, Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Robben Island route in South Africa, where she completed a 30 km swim in 3 hours 26 minutes.Her illustrious career has earned her India's highest sporting and adventure honours, including the Arjuna Award (1990), the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award (2002), and the Padma Shri.- Ends

Puskur is confident that the excitement will be felt all over the country to give the local game a much-needed boost. "It's a unique opportunity to bring global attention to Indian football and, most importantly, a chance to spark a greater interest in Indian football among fans across the country, giving the game the spotlight it has long needed," he said. The draw comes with Indian domestic soccer in crisis. The 2025-26 ISL season was due to start in September, but has been suspended due to uncertainty over the renewal of an organising agreement between the Indian federation and its commercial partner, the Football Sports Development Ltd., pending a Supreme Court order. Bengaluru FC, Odisha FC and Chennaiyin FC have either suspended salaries or ceased soccer operations until a solution is found. "While the financial boost is important, the bigger picture is the opportunity this creates for long-term growth," said Puskur. "The global attention, sponsorship interest, and fan engagement from a moment like this help strengthen the club's foundations, allowing us to invest in the future."

John Hastings recalls the moment when he had to call the hotel reception to tell them he will fix the damage caused in Yuvraj Singh's room. In a room full of people including international cricketers and Bollywood stars, a young Australia fast bowler's attempt to play his favourite songs at a party hosted by Yuvraj Singh resulted in a broken table and a pin-drop silence. The anecdote, narrated by the guilty party himself, is from during the 2011 ODI World Cup held in the Indian subcontinent. The then 25-year-old John Hastings was among the Aussie stars invited to attend a party at Yuvraj's suite which the former fast bowler says was bigger than his house back home. 'It was one of those ones where we'd obviously had a few and I think you know we'd obviously been invited up to Yuvi's (Yuvraj Singh) room and walked in and there was a suite. It was massive. It was as big as my house over here. And I remember looking around, I just jeez there's so many people in here," Hastings said on LiSTNR sport. While the size and crowd impressed the young Aussie, the music didn't. 'What's going on with this music? So, I was fiddling around with the laptop trying to get some of my playlist on and I sat on the edge of this…ledge that had a phone on there. There was a laptop, I sat on it and boom off it came down on the floor and I just remember everyone just stopped and looked and went silent, dead quiet, pin could drop," Hastings remembered. The situation could have easily intimidated Hastings, but he recalls keeping his calm and calling the reception to inform them of the damage he had caused. However, the phone in the room had been damaged as well. 'I just went, 'What am I going to do here? I'm a young kid.' It's Yuvraj Singh's room. There are so many people here. There's probably Bollywood celebrities everywhere, and I just went, 'Right, stay calm,' and I went to the phone, which was already out off the wall, and I'd seen the cord be ripped out of the wall. So, I just thought, I'll just make sure that I've made this right. And there was no one on the end of the line. So, I picked up the phone. I said, 'Reception, yep. John Hastings, I just want to make sure that there's a bit of damage in Mr. Singh's room. I'll make sure I fix it up. I'm in the room such and such.' And everyone was like, 'Well done, mate. That's brilliant.' And everyone just kicked on, played on," Hastings said. 'I actually went down to reception to make sure that I could rectify the situation, but there was never another word.
