Cyclist Greg LeMond receives Congressional Gold Medal at Capitol ceremony

Al Arabiya09-07-2025
Greg LeMond, one of the most decorated cyclists in American history as a three-time Tour de France winner, was honored Wednesday with the Congressional Gold Medal.
LeMond, 64, received the medal during a ceremony at the Capitol with his wife Kathy and children in attendance. It was announced he'd receive the medal in 2020, but the pandemic delayed his ceremony. 'It is the highest honor that we can bestow in this institution,' Republican US House Speaker Mike Johnson said. 'It honors citizens whose contributions have shaped our country, enriched our history, and lifted the spirits of the American people. And much like the American Dream itself, this honor is not reserved for any one person and profession; it can be earned and won by anyone who's deserving.'

LeMond, a two-time World Road Race champion, was shot on a hunting trip in 1987 at the peak of his career, shortly after becoming the first American man to win the Tour de France. He recovered to win two more Tours: by the race's narrowest margin (eight seconds) in 1989 and again in 1990.
'The honor is more than I ever expected, and I accept it with deep gratitude and also with a profound sense of humility,' LeMond said. 'Today isn't just about reflecting on my own journey. It's about honoring the people, places, and the moments that shaped it.'
Johnson presented the medal alongside Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson of California and former Republican Rep. Tom Graves of Georgia. LeMond reflected on his time in Europe, where he was proudly referred to as 'The American.'
'I am honored beyond words to receive this Congressional Gold Medal,' he said. 'I stand here knowing this honor isn't mine alone. It belongs to every teammate, every supporter, every family member, and to all of the extraordinary Americans whose courage and sacrifice made my life and career possible. I am proud to be an American, and I thank you all of you from the bottom of my heart.'

Trump-Putin summit to be held at US military base near Alaska

The summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will be held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, a White House official said Wednesday. The two leaders will meet on Friday to discuss an end to the more than three-year war in Ukraine, in what will be their first standalone summit since a 2018 meeting in Helsinki. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson -- located near Alaska state capital Anchorage -- is made up of the Elmendorf Air Force base and the Army's Fort Richardson, which were combined in 2010. The base is the headquarters for entities including Alaska Command -- responsible for US forces in the state -- as well as the Alaskan NORAD Region, which helps provide aerospace control and warning. The US military regularly conducts intercepts of Russian aircraft that venture near American airspace in Alaska, contacting Moscow's planes visually or electronically. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Trump has spent the first months of his second term in office trying to broker a peace accord, an effort that has so far failed to yield a breakthrough.

Switzerland sees risk of tariffs increasing cost of US F-35A jets

Switzerland remains committed to buying Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighter jets from the United States despite an unclear total cost of procurement in part due to the impact of US tariffs, the government said on Wednesday. The Swiss government reaffirmed its commitment to buying the jets a week after the United States imposed some of its highest tariff rates worldwide on Switzerland due to the size of the US trade deficit with the European country. The price of the jets would ultimately depend on inflation in the United States, global commodity prices 'and other factors such as price increases due to the tariffs imposed by the USA worldwide,' the government said in a statement. Bern chose the F-35A as its next-generation fighter plane in 2021 for what it considered a fixed price of around 6 billion Swiss francs ($7.47 billion) for 36 jets. The US has since said that sum was a misunderstanding. Talks with the United States to avert the total sum from potentially increasing by $650 million to $1.3 billion showed it was impossible for Switzerland to assert a fixed price, the Swiss government said. ($1 = 0.8028 Swiss francs)

Indian politicians demand action against Israeli envoy after attack on Priyanka Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Indian politicians are demanding action against the Israeli ambassador in Delhi following his verbal attack on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. Gandhi, a lawmaker from the opposition Congress party, who is the daughter of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and sister of Rahul Gandhi — leader of the opposition — wrote on social media on Tuesday that 'the Israeli state is committing genocide' in Gaza. 'It has murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children. It has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions,' she said, calling out the Indian government over its inaction. 'Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself. It is shameful that the Indian Government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine.' The post was almost immediately responded to by Reuven Azar, Israel's ambassador to India, who told Gandhi: 'What is shameful is your deceit.' The post triggered outrage among Congress members, with the party's spokesperson Supriya Shrinate demanding that the Indian government act over the envoy's 'casting aspersions' on Gandhi. 'He should be officially made to apologize. She is a member of parliament, she is an elected representative, and how dare the Israeli ambassador talk to her in that tone. The government should take this up in no uncertain terms,' Shrinate told Arab News. 'We seek an unconditional apology for the use of tone and words that the Israeli ambassador has used, and the reality is that the world is watching what Israel is doing in Gaza.' Priyanka Chaturvedi, an MP and spokesperson of the Shiv Sena (UBT) party, said inaction from the Ministry of External Affairs would only embolden foreign diplomats 'to speak to Indian parliamentarians in this tone and tenor in their own country. 'This is unacceptable,' she wrote on X. 'Hope Ministry of External Affairs reprimands this Hon. Ambassador.' For Gaurav Gogoi, a Congress lawmaker from Assam, 'the disparaging comments made by a foreign Ambassador against a Member of Parliament of India is a serious breach of privilege,' he said in an X post, urging Parliament to take action if the government does not respond. The government in New Delhi has largely remained quiet since Israel launched its deadly assault on Gaza in October 2023. But India's civil society and the opposition are increasingly speaking up against Israeli war crimes. Pawan Khera, chairman of the Congress party's publicity department, called on External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to address the Israeli ambassador's 'public attempt to intimidate' Gandhi. 'That the ambassador of a state accused of genocide worldwide would target a sitting Member of the Indian Parliament is both unprecedented and intolerable. It is a direct affront to the dignity of Indian democracy,' he wrote on X. Khera also addressed the envoy directly: 'No amount of deflection or whitewashing can obscure the facts. The international community is witnessing, in real time, the killing of civilians in Gaza — including those queuing for aid. The world sees the heartbreaking images emerging from Gaza every day. It will neither forget nor forgive.'
