Cyclist Greg LeMond receives Congressional Gold Medal at Capitol ceremony
LeMond, 64, received the medal during a ceremony at the Capitol with his wife Kathy and children in attendance. It was announced he'd receive the medal in 2020, but the pandemic delayed his ceremony. 'It is the highest honor that we can bestow in this institution,' Republican US House Speaker Mike Johnson said. 'It honors citizens whose contributions have shaped our country, enriched our history, and lifted the spirits of the American people. And much like the American Dream itself, this honor is not reserved for any one person and profession; it can be earned and won by anyone who's deserving.'

LeMond, a two-time World Road Race champion, was shot on a hunting trip in 1987 at the peak of his career, shortly after becoming the first American man to win the Tour de France. He recovered to win two more Tours: by the race's narrowest margin (eight seconds) in 1989 and again in 1990.
'The honor is more than I ever expected, and I accept it with deep gratitude and also with a profound sense of humility,' LeMond said. 'Today isn't just about reflecting on my own journey. It's about honoring the people, places, and the moments that shaped it.'
Johnson presented the medal alongside Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson of California and former Republican Rep. Tom Graves of Georgia. LeMond reflected on his time in Europe, where he was proudly referred to as 'The American.'
'I am honored beyond words to receive this Congressional Gold Medal,' he said. 'I stand here knowing this honor isn't mine alone. It belongs to every teammate, every supporter, every family member, and to all of the extraordinary Americans whose courage and sacrifice made my life and career possible. I am proud to be an American, and I thank you all of you from the bottom of my heart.'

Switzerland sees risk of tariffs increasing cost of US F-35A jets
Switzerland remains committed to buying Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II fighter jets from the United States despite an unclear total cost of procurement in part due to the impact of US tariffs, the government said on Wednesday. The Swiss government reaffirmed its commitment to buying the jets a week after the United States imposed some of its highest tariff rates worldwide on Switzerland due to the size of the US trade deficit with the European country. The price of the jets would ultimately depend on inflation in the United States, global commodity prices 'and other factors such as price increases due to the tariffs imposed by the USA worldwide,' the government said in a statement. Bern chose the F-35A as its next-generation fighter plane in 2021 for what it considered a fixed price of around 6 billion Swiss francs ($7.47 billion) for 36 jets. The US has since said that sum was a misunderstanding. Talks with the United States to avert the total sum from potentially increasing by $650 million to $1.3 billion showed it was impossible for Switzerland to assert a fixed price, the Swiss government said. Indian politicians demand action against Israeli envoy after attack on Priyanka Gandhi
NEW DELHI: Indian politicians are demanding action against the Israeli ambassador in Delhi following his verbal attack on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi. Gandhi, a lawmaker from the opposition Congress party, who is the daughter of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and sister of Rahul Gandhi — leader of the opposition — wrote on social media on Tuesday that 'the Israeli state is committing genocide' in Gaza. 'It has murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children. It has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions,' she said, calling out the Indian government over its inaction. 'Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself. It is shameful that the Indian Government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine.' The post was almost immediately responded to by Reuven Azar, Israel's ambassador to India, who told Gandhi: 'What is shameful is your deceit.' The post triggered outrage among Congress members, with the party's spokesperson Supriya Shrinate demanding that the Indian government act over the envoy's 'casting aspersions' on Gandhi. 'He should be officially made to apologize. She is a member of parliament, she is an elected representative, and how dare the Israeli ambassador talk to her in that tone.
