Brand safety meets performance with the power of context

In a digital world where unpredictability is the norm, advertisers face the constant challenge of safeguarding their brand's reputation from an expanding list of challenges – AI-powered ad fraud, misinformation and MFA sites being the most recent ones.
Social media brings another layer of complexity. With billions of pieces of user generated content daily, even minor adjacency errors can have major consequences.
This is the challenge today and consumers say it out loud: according to research by media quality optimisation leader, Integral Ad Science (IAS), a staggering 71 per cent would feel less favourable toward a brand that advertises near inappropriate content.
So how can advertisers proactively protect their brands while also prioritising cost efficiency and drive brand performance?
Brands must consider what surrounds their message- what it means, how it feels- and to achieve that they must move beyond simple keyword blocking and take a holistic approach to brand safety and suitability and try to understand the context of where their ads appear.
Over reliance on keyword lists can lead to blocking safe and suitable content that brands would want to appear near online and harness scale. For example, the word 'shot' might appear on a keyword list to avoid content related to gun violence — but blocking the word 'shot' can also avoid safe and suitable content related to basketball, which could be desirable for a sports brand.
Emerging contextual technologies now enable advertisers to interpret content and importantly video content on a deeper level, analysing not just meta data, but semantics, sentiment, and emotion. To meet this challenge, advertisers must go beyond surface-level detection.
Frame-by-frame analysis, for instance, allows more accurate classification of video content on platforms like Meta – detecting up to 24 per cent more unsuitable content than conventional methods.
In one test, it led to a threefold reduction in brand suitability failure rate and a 69 per cent drop in wasted spend — freeing up budget to reinvest in quality environments.
Contextual understanding can lead to major strategic advantages for advertisers.
Proper measurement and verification tell advertisers what happened exactly in terms of brand safety and suitability at the most granular level (e.g. specific URL or a specific Video ID) and feeds actions to take at the planning or campaign execution level to improve performance.
Optimisation is just as important as measurement. While measurement tells advertisers what happened after the bid, optimization ensures quality before it even occurs.
Context control can reduce media waste, as it prevents an ad from serving even after winning the bid, allowing brands to allocate their budget towards brand safe and suitable content that effectively reaches consumers and drives equity, increases campaign performance, and ultimately does not overblock safe publishers, avoiding again wasted spend.
As targeting solutions grow in precision – identifying not just what to avoid but where to lean in – advertising begins to operate with the intelligence and intentionality today's media environment demands. The future of performance is context-aware, sentiment-smart, and value-aligned. It respects the consumer, safeguards the brand, and elevates the quality of media.
Successful cases vary across verticals and industries, with an auto brand that optimised for context-safe impressions achieving 28 times higher success rates and a 96 per cent reduction in cost per success compared to impressions flagged as unsafe.
In another, a medical research institute found that its safe impressions delivered a 11 times higher performance uplift. These aren't edge cases- they are examples of how aligning safety, suitability, and performance can drive business outcomes across industries.
A turning point for advertising.
The days of treating safety as an afterthought or brand equity as disconnected from ROI are over. In their place emerges a more holistic vision where strategy is informed by context, driven by relevance, and measured by impact.
For marketers ready to embrace this shift, the reward is not just better campaigns, but stronger brands and more trusted connections with their audience.

With this option, one can share their last active location with a chosen group of friends. The user can see their locations and content they've posted from interesting places. Also, the feature is designed with safety as a priority — parents of supervised teen accounts will be notified if their child turns on location sharing. "Share locations with friends and see what's happening around you on the Instagram map. And if you're a parent with supervision set up for your teen, you have control over whether they can share their location, and who they're sharing with," said Instagram. When the app rolled out the Map feature, it caused a wave of confusion among users who were worried that their locations would be visible to all their followers. Some users have since been shocked to discover that their location was being shared, viral posts have shown. "Mine was turned on and my home address was showing for all of my followers to see," Instagram user Lindsey Bell wrote in reply to a warning posted by "Bachelor" reality television personality Kelley Flanagan to her 300,000 TikTok followers. "Turned it off immediately once I knew but had me feeling absolutely sick about it." In a TikTok video, Flanagan called Instagram's new location sharing feature "dangerous" and gave step-by-step instructions on how to make sure it is turned off. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri fired off a post on Meta-owned Threads stressing that Instagram location sharing is off by default, meaning users need to opt in for it to be active. "Quick Friend Map clarification, your location will only be shared if you decide to share it, and if you do, it can only be shared with a limited group of people you choose," Mosseri wrote. "To start, location sharing is completely off." The feature was added as a way for friends to better connect with one another, sharing posts from "cool spots," Instagram said in a blog post. Users can be selective regarding who they share locations with, and can turn it off whenever they wish, according to Instagram. Friends tab The Friends tab within Reels helps users see what their friends have liked, commented on, or recommended via Blends. Instagram shared these updates through an official blog post, accompanied by a reel from platform chief Adam Mosseri, where he opened up about the new features in detail. All three features are available in the UAE as of this week. According to Meta, the new features are meant to make the app more community focused, and help people connect with their friends.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds with nearly $1 trillion in assets, has completely divested from six prominent U. S.-listed firms during the second quarter of 2025. Filings reveal that PIF no longer holds any shares in Meta, Shopify, PayPal, Alibaba, Nu Holdings or FedEx. At the end of March, the fund still held significant stakes—for example, nearly 668,000 class A shares of Meta and 1.76 million shares of PayPal—yet by the close of June, it had fully exited these positions. This strategic shift resulted in a reduction of PIF's disclosed U. S. equity holdings from $25.5 billion in Q1 to $23.8 billion in Q2, including call options. The divestments occurred during a period when U. S. markets were rebounding from April's losses tied to tariff policy uncertainty. This recalibration aligns with PIF's broader Vision 2030 mandate, under which the fund is increasingly directing its capital toward domestic megaprojects like NEOM, as well as global sectors such as tourism, clean energy, logistics, and elite sports investments. ADVERTISEMENT In the second quarter, PIF's heaviest exposures remained in sectors aligned with innovation and entertainment. According to its Q2 13F filing, the top holdings comprised Uber, Electronic Arts, Lucid and Take-Two Interactive, maintaining a concentrated portfolio weighted toward high-growth technology and gaming assets. By contrast, positions in firms like Meta, PayPal and Alibaba—which once formed a portion of its U. S. portfolio—were eliminated entirely. The timing suggests a deliberate shift away from large-cap tech and fintech, perhaps reflecting changing priorities amid global market volatility and evolving geopolitical considerations. Exiting stakes in Meta and Shopify, which represented substantial tech exposure, signals a pivot toward sectors considered more resilient or strategically aligned with long-term national ambitions. PIF's move exemplifies its dual-track strategy: while shedding exposure to certain U. S.-listed technology and logistics firms, it continues to cement core holdings in key global brands and innovative sectors. As PIF steers more resources toward domestic transformation and sustainable sectors, its shifting portfolio underscores how sovereign wealth strategy can reflect broader economic and policy imperatives.

WhatsApp has introduced new features aimed at making group calls easier to plan and more interactive, the messaging platform said on Thursday. Users can now schedule calls directly from the "Calls" tab by tapping the '+' button, setting a date and time, and inviting individuals or groups. Scheduled calls appear on 'Upcoming Calls', with the option to share links and integrate them into personal calendars. Participants also receive reminders before a call begins. During live calls, users will be able to signal they want to speak by using a new 'Raise Hand' button, while real-time emoji reactions allow them to respond without interrupting. Call link creators will also get notifications when someone joins via their link. All calls remain end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp said, in line with its privacy commitments. The latest update underscores WhatsApp's effort to expand beyond text messaging and position itself more directly against conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. In recent years, the app has added larger group sizes, HD video, improved file sharing and tools for event planning. Availability by country While the new tools will be made available globally, voice and video calls on WhatsApp remain restricted in some markets. In the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, calls are blocked under telecom regulations, although messaging and media sharing continue to function. China, North Korea and, more recently, Russia have also imposed bans or restrictions. In these countries, users must rely on government-approved alternatives such as Botim and C'Me in the Gulf, or WeChat in China, while platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams are permitted in certain countries for business and education use. However, countries such as Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and Lebanon allow WhatsApp calling without restrictions. Meta's broader momentum The update comes as WhatsApp's parent company Meta reports strong quarterly earnings. The US tech major's revenue rose 22 per cent year on year in the second quarter to $47.5 billion, while net income jumped to $18.3 billion. Daily active users across its family of apps grew to 3.48 billion. With WhatsApp's new update, Meta is signalling its intent to make the platform a stronger contender in the global communications market, even if local restrictions mean some users cannot yet take full advantage of its features.
