Brand safety meets performance with the power of context

Brand safety meets performance with the power of context

Campaign ME30-04-2025

In a digital world where unpredictability is the norm, advertisers face the constant challenge of safeguarding their brand's reputation from an expanding list of challenges – AI-powered ad fraud, misinformation and MFA sites being the most recent ones.
Social media brings another layer of complexity. With billions of pieces of user generated content daily, even minor adjacency errors can have major consequences.
This is the challenge today and consumers say it out loud: according to research by media quality optimisation leader, Integral Ad Science (IAS), a staggering 71 per cent would feel less favourable toward a brand that advertises near inappropriate content.
So how can advertisers proactively protect their brands while also prioritising cost efficiency and drive brand performance?
Brands must consider what surrounds their message- what it means, how it feels- and to achieve that they must move beyond simple keyword blocking and take a holistic approach to brand safety and suitability and try to understand the context of where their ads appear.
Over reliance on keyword lists can lead to blocking safe and suitable content that brands would want to appear near online and harness scale. For example, the word 'shot' might appear on a keyword list to avoid content related to gun violence — but blocking the word 'shot' can also avoid safe and suitable content related to basketball, which could be desirable for a sports brand.
Emerging contextual technologies now enable advertisers to interpret content and importantly video content on a deeper level, analysing not just meta data, but semantics, sentiment, and emotion. To meet this challenge, advertisers must go beyond surface-level detection.
Frame-by-frame analysis, for instance, allows more accurate classification of video content on platforms like Meta – detecting up to 24 per cent more unsuitable content than conventional methods.
In one test, it led to a threefold reduction in brand suitability failure rate and a 69 per cent drop in wasted spend — freeing up budget to reinvest in quality environments.
Contextual understanding can lead to major strategic advantages for advertisers.
Proper measurement and verification tell advertisers what happened exactly in terms of brand safety and suitability at the most granular level (e.g. specific URL or a specific Video ID) and feeds actions to take at the planning or campaign execution level to improve performance.
Optimisation is just as important as measurement. While measurement tells advertisers what happened after the bid, optimization ensures quality before it even occurs.
Context control can reduce media waste, as it prevents an ad from serving even after winning the bid, allowing brands to allocate their budget towards brand safe and suitable content that effectively reaches consumers and drives equity, increases campaign performance, and ultimately does not overblock safe publishers, avoiding again wasted spend.
As targeting solutions grow in precision – identifying not just what to avoid but where to lean in – advertising begins to operate with the intelligence and intentionality today's media environment demands. The future of performance is context-aware, sentiment-smart, and value-aligned. It respects the consumer, safeguards the brand, and elevates the quality of media.
Successful cases vary across verticals and industries, with an auto brand that optimised for context-safe impressions achieving 28 times higher success rates and a 96 per cent reduction in cost per success compared to impressions flagged as unsafe.
In another, a medical research institute found that its safe impressions delivered a 11 times higher performance uplift. These aren't edge cases- they are examples of how aligning safety, suitability, and performance can drive business outcomes across industries.
A turning point for advertising.
The days of treating safety as an afterthought or brand equity as disconnected from ROI are over. In their place emerges a more holistic vision where strategy is informed by context, driven by relevance, and measured by impact.
For marketers ready to embrace this shift, the reward is not just better campaigns, but stronger brands and more trusted connections with their audience.

Meta and Yandex Exploited Android Loophole to Track Users Across Browsers and Apps

Meta and Yandex have been found to exploit a loophole in Android's architecture, enabling them to de-anonymize users' web browsing activities by linking them to persistent app identities. This tracking method bypasses standard privacy protections, including incognito mode and cookie clearing, raising significant concerns about user privacy. Researchers from Radboud University, IMDEA Networks, and KU Leuven discovered that Meta's Pixel and Yandex's Metrica tracking scripts, embedded in millions of websites, communicate with their respective Android apps via the device's localhost interface. This communication allows the apps to receive browsing data directly from the browser, effectively linking web activity to user identities within the apps. The tracking mechanism operates by having the browser-based scripts send data to specific ports on the localhost interface, where the apps are listening. For instance, Meta's apps listen on UDP ports 12580–12585, while Yandex's apps use ports 29009, 29010, 30102, and 30103. This setup enables the apps to collect browsing data, including cookies and metadata, even when users employ privacy measures like incognito mode or VPNs. ADVERTISEMENT Meta began implementing this method in September 2024, while Yandex has utilized a similar approach since 2017. The widespread use of Meta Pixel and Yandex Metrica—estimated to be present on 5.8 million and 3 million websites respectively—suggests that a vast number of Android users could be affected. The discovery has prompted responses from major browser developers. Google has initiated an investigation and is working on mitigations to prevent such tracking techniques. Mozilla is also developing solutions to protect Firefox users on Android from this invasive tracking. Meta has paused the functionality in question and is in discussions with Google to address the issue. Privacy advocates and experts have expressed alarm over the findings. The method's ability to circumvent standard privacy controls and its potential to be used by malicious actors for surveillance underscore the need for stricter enforcement of privacy standards and greater transparency from tech companies regarding data collection practices.

Kaspersky Discovers Malware Targeting Fintech Platforms

At its annual Cyber Security Weekend for the Middle East, Turkiye and Africa (META) region, Kaspersky revealed the discovery of GriffithRAT – a new and highly sophisticated malware used in campaigns targeting fintech companies, online trading platforms, and Forex exchange services worldwide, with victims in the UAE, Egypt, Turkiye, and South Africa. Distributed via Skype and Telegram channels, GriffithRAT is typically disguised as files containing financial trend analysis or investment advice. These deceptive tactics target both organizations and individual traders who unknowingly download the malware. Once downloaded, it enables attackers to steal login credentials, capture screenshots/webcam stream, log keystrokes, and monitor user activity. The stolen data can be exploited in a variety of ways, ranging from gathering competitive business intelligence to tracking individuals or valuable assets – highlighting the broad potential for misuse. Kaspersky researchers have been monitoring GriffithRAT for over a year and link it to cyber mercenary operations, where threat actors are contracted by third parties to conduct targeted attacks – often driven by motives such as corporate espionage. This connection is reinforced by technical analysis, which shows strong similarities between GriffithRAT and DarkMe intrusions, a known remote access Trojan (RAT) commonly used in mercenary-led cyber campaigns. 'This discovery highlights the growing sophistication and commercialization of cyberthreats,' said Maher Yamout, Lead Security Researcher at Kaspersky. 'GriffithRAT is not the work of random hackers, it is a maintained piece of malware and part of a broader trend where cyber mercenaries are hired to collect sensitive information, often for financial or strategic advantage. The data harvested could offer visibility into the inner workings of major organizations, provide unethical competitive advantage, and may also be sold on the dark web. It is a reminder that in today's threat landscape, cybercrime is increasingly professional, targeted, and persistent.' To stay protected, Kaspersky advises individuals to: Be attentive to the files you download, check them with reputable cybersecurity software, such as Kaspersky Premium for individual users and Kaspersky Next for businesses, that helps detect complex threats, respond automatically, and manage security across all devices, networks, and cloud systems from one place. Be extra cautious when dealing with social media and instant messaging apps; hackers use such mediums to deliver malware in addition to the common phishing emails. Use Kaspersky Threat Intelligence to go beyond the malware and understand the threat actors behind it. By combining diverse data sources and expert research, the portal offers actionable insights – giving access to tactical, operational, and strategic intelligence to stay secure in a dynamic threat landscape. Improve your and your employees' security awareness on a regular basis and encourage safe practices, such as proper account protection. 0 0
