Liverpool hero's agent admits ex-Reds star would love Anfield return this summer

While attention remains firmly placed on whether move can be sealed for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, Arne Slot remains in the market for a new assistant after John Heitinga's departure
Dirk Kuyt would love to rejoin Liverpool as Arne Slot's assistant manager but his agent has ruled out the prospect of the Anfield cult hero replacing John Heitinga as the head coach's key lieutenant.
Slot is in the market for a new assistant coach after Heitinga last week became the new boss at Ajax and that prompted speculation that former forward Kuyt could step in - having previously had a chance to work as an assistant under the Reds chief while at AZ Alkmaar.

However Kuyt's representative Rob Jansen has said the move will not happen.

'No, it will be a different assistant coach. That would have been great for him,' Jansen told podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp. 'The assistant of Liverpool will be someone else. It would have been great for Dirk. He would have loved to go to Liverpool. Assistant there is of course a serious level.'
In a conversation on Peter Crouch's podcast earlier this season Kuyt confirmed he turned down Slot's offer at Alkmaar.
'I know him very well. I had the opportunity when I retired from football to become his assistant at AZ,' Kuyt said. 'I didn't choose to become his assistant which I regret of course now.
"But when he was at Feyenoord he gave me the opportunity to work a week alongside him to see how he's training and preparing for a game, so that was really interesting and of course I follow him very closely.'
Kuyt, currently in charge of Belgian top flight side Beerschot, spent six seasons at Liverpool, scoring 71 times in 285 appearances. But his only piece of silverware was a League Cup.

Among the other names linked with replacing Heitinga are Marino Pusic, who was Slot's assistant at AZ and Feyenoord and last month said farewell to Shakhtar Donetsk.
Etienne Reijnen, the current Feyenoord assistant, was in contention for a role last summer but there were reported issues with his work permit.
Liverpool have already had an active start to the off-season with Jeremie Frimpong arriving from Bayer Leverkusen as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement, while Milos Kerkez is close to being signed from Bournemouth and talks continue with Leverkusen around star man Florian Wirtz over a British record deal that could end up being worth £125m.

Gio van Bronckhorst to land Liverpool job under Arne Slot as Premier League champions go double dutch

The former Rangers manager is set to replace Johnny Heitinga on the Anfield coaching staff after his departure to Ajax Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set to join Arne Slot's coaching staff at Liverpool. The former Rangers boss is poised to return to the dugout for the first time since leaving Besiktas last year, with the English Premier League champions to add him to Slot's staff as an assistant to his compatriot and fellow Feyenoord coaching alumni. ‌ The Reds started the search after Johnny Heitinga left this summer to take the manager's job and former club Ajax. ‌ And Slot is set to go Dutch again by bringing van Bronckhorst into the fold. Former Everton man Heitinga proved a popular figure in the Anfield dressing room, working under slot for just over a year. But the chance to take over at his hometown team in Amsterdam was too big to turn down and he was appointed after previous boss Francesco Farioli stepped down following a final day collapse that saw Ajax miss out on the Eredivise title by a point to PSV. Now van Bronckhorst, who was in the Ibrox hotseat for a year before being sacked in November 2022 for slipping too far behind Celtic, is set for a return to football with the Merseyside club. The Dutchman was replaced at Rangers by Steven Gerrard's former assistant and ex-Liverpool academy coach Michael Beale, with many feeling in hindsight that van Bronckhorst was harshly treated by the Gers hierarchy. ‌ Van Bronckhorst began his career at Feyenoord before joining the Light Blues in 1998. After three years in Govan, he joined Arsenal before making the move to Barcelona, the finishing his playing career back at Feyenoord. He became the boss at De Kuip in 2015 and led the Rotterdam club to their first Eredivise title for 18 years in 2016. Newport to face Barnet in new Carabao Cup preliminary round

The competition will have a new format due to nine Premier League teams qualifying for European competition. That means that four teams must play in a preliminary round to reduce the number of clubs for rounds one and two, before the European qualifiers enter in round three. County's woeful finish to last season meant that they dropped down to 22nd in the table, the last safe spot, with Accrington Stanley above them. Had they won against Tranmere on final day then the Exiles would have gone straight into the regionalised first round, with the potential for a plum tie against Swansea, Cardiff or Bristol City. County and Accrington will be joined in the preliminary round by Barnet and Oldham, who secured returns to League Two. The decision has been made to regionalise the ties and that means the Exiles will go up against National League champions Barnet, with Tuesday, August 5 the likely date. A draw will be made on Thursday, June 26 (4.30pm) to determine whether the fixture will be at Rodney Parade or The Hive Stadium. That will be followed by a draw for the first round, with those ties taking place the following week. The Barnet fixture will be a second game under new boss David Hughes with League Two getting under way on the first weekend of August. County played the Bees in the FA Cup in December, 2023 when they drew 1-1 in Newport and then won 4-1 in north London. KEY COUNTY DATES League Two fixtures – Thursday, June 26 (midday). EFL Trophy group stage draw – Thursday, June 26 (2.30pm). League Cup draw – Thursday, June 26 (4.30pm). Start of League Two – August 2/3. League Cup, preliminary round – w/c August 4. League Cup, round one – w/c August 11. Final games of the regular season: May 2/3. SUMMER TRANSFER WINDOW Reopens: Monday, June 16. Transfer deadline day: Monday, September 1 (7pm). CONFIRMED FRIENDLIES Tuesday, July 1 – Pontypridd (away). Saturday, July 12 – Worcester City (away). Tuesday, July 15 – Weston-super-Mare (away). Saturday, July 19 – Torquay (away). Ex-Rangers boss 'close' to surprise new job with EPL giants

The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge at Ibrox, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. Read more: Liverpool are now 'close' to appointing Van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff, claims The Athletic. He will replace his fellow countryman John Heitinga, who recently left Anfield to take on the role of head coach at Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee. He now appears set to move to Liverpool as the club looks to build on a title-winning campaign. Speaking in April of this year, Van Bronckhorst was asked whether he'd like to become the permanent manager of Rangers once again: "No," he said live on TNT Sports. "For me, that book is closed. "Maybe as a fan, but no." Rangers recently appointed Russell Martin as the club's new head coach following a change of ownership this summer. He officially got down to business earlier this week ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
