Key Thane-Palghar rd in bad shape amid 770cr overhaul

Time of India3 hours ago

Bhiwandi: With the monsoon picking up pace, the condition of a key connector between Thane and Palghar districts has deteriorated. Potholes have cropped up at multiple spots on the 64km Bhiwandi-Wada road—widely regarded as the worst road in Thane district.
Although Rs 770 crore has been allocated for its concretisation, locals say the slow pace of work and the substandard quality of materials used have added to their inconvenience. They now plan to organise a rasta roko in protest on Thursday.
The concretisation work began four months ago. In additional, repairs are being undertaken on a 19-km stretch from Bhiwandi to Ambadi for Rs 80 crore. Bhiwandi-Wada road is also used by vehicles dispatched from the godowns of Bhiwandi, known as the largest warehousing hub in the country, to go towards Gujarat.
Pramod Pawar, spokesperson of Shramjeevi Sangathan, an outfit that fights for workers' rights which is organising the rasta roko, said the state govt spent Rs 150 crore over the past six years on repairing the road but its condition remains deplorable. He said the stretch saw 10 deaths and numerous injuries caused by potholes last year alone, which was acknowledged by the Palghar district guardian minister, but no action was taken against the contractor.

The rash of complaints prompted Sena's Bhiwandi Rural MLA Shantaram More to assess the road along with his supporters on Sunday. After symbolically filling some potholes with soil, he asked PWD officials at the site to fill all of them in seven days and to initiate action against negligent contractors. More asserted that action should be taken against errant contractors regardless of their proximity with functionaries of the governing dispensation.
A PWD engineer said the contractor has been told to fill the potholes on the road, adding that the concretisation work was awarded to another contractor only a few months ago. "We are certain that the work will be completed within the stipulated time limit."

Right to free speech doesn't cover hate: SC notice to 5 states; Centre on Wazahat Khan's plea to club cases

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court stressed Monday that "hate speech" is not covered under freedom of expression, even as it restrained police from four states from arresting Wazahat Khan, who was instrumental in the arrest of social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli for her communal posts on Pahalgam killings. FIRs have been lodged against him for posts on X expressing hate against Hindus. On Khan's plea that the FIRs were in retaliation for his complaint against Panoli and his comments had been deleted, the bench said, "It is not so simple. All these comments are hate-mongering". Wazahat Khan through senior advocate D S Naidu told a bench of Justices K V Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh the FIRs against his client were lodged as a retaliation against his complaint to West Bengal police against Panoli, leading to her arrest. He said Khan had made these comments in 2023, had since deleted them, and even posted a video apologising to "Hindu brothers and sisters". Naidu said Khan is already in police and judicial custody in connection with two FIRs in West Bengal and pleaded for consolidation of the FIRs in one place as the SC had done in the past in many cases, when the FIRs have been lodged for the same offence. "He is perhaps reaping what he had sown" and learnt the lesson the hard way, the counsel said, mirroring Khan's repentance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? "Your apology says the FIRs were a retaliation to you lodging a complaint against the social media influencer. We do not know where we are heading. Incitement to violence may not be only physical violence. It could be many other forms of violence. Hate speeches take us nowhere," Justice Viswanathan said. He reminded Khan's counsel about a proverb - "A wound inflicted by fire may heal, but not the one inflicted with tongue". The bench issued notice to all five states, including West Bengal, and to the Union govt on Khan's plea for consolidating the FIRs in one state, or on the alternative, club the FIRs in one state at one place within the state concerned. The bench posted further hearing on July 14.

Bengal: Include 19 of CM's books in school libraries across state, says Education dept circular

The STATE Education Department has issued a circular instructing all government and government-aided secondary and higher secondary schools in the state to include 19 books written by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in their school libraries. A notice has been sent from the Commissioner of School Education to all District Inspectors of Schools listing approximately 560 titles to be procured and shelved. Among these, 19 are authored by Banerjee, including Amar Pahar, Amar Jungle, Nandi Ma, Poribartan, and Soja Sapta. The directive is part of a Rs 20.26 crore library development grant provided to 2,026 schools across the state, with each school receiving Rs 1 lakh. The list of recommended books has been divided into five regional sets and sent to school authorities in 25 districts. All district inspectors have been directed to ensure that the schools adhere to the list. However, the circular has sparked criticism from educators. Animesh Halder, of the Secondary Teachers and Employees Association, told The Indian Express, 'This order is a serious blow to the autonomy of educational institutions. We strongly oppose should have the right to choose books for their libraries. This project doesn't aim to expand students' knowledge in literature, science, history or other subjects. It is simply a vehicle to promote the government's own agenda.'
