Buying the dip still works – even in this new world

RETAIL investors have won again. When trade tensions flared in early April and about US$6.6 trillion in market value vanished from US stocks in just two business days – the fifth-worst two-day drop since the S&P 500's creation in 1957 – they didn't panic. Instead, they did what they've learned to do over the past 15 years: They bought the dip. Six weeks later, the US stocks benchmark not only recovered but surpassed its pre-tariff levels, delivering a gain of about 17 per cent from the lows to those who kept their nerve.
Individual investors have become an increasingly powerful force in markets. At the end of 2024, they collectively held US$35 trillion in US stocks – 38 per cent of the market, according to Federal Reserve and Goldman Sachs data. And they're not afraid to trade: They came into the year accounting for about 19.5 per cent of US equity-trading volume, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Larry Tabb – up from 17 per cent a year prior and well above pre-pandemic levels. While this is below the 24 per cent peak reached during the meme-stock frenzy at the beginning of 2021, commission-free trading has created a sustainably higher level of retail engagement.
When markets tumbled in early April, these retail investors sprang into action. At Charles Schwab, whose 37 million active brokerage accounts represent a significant slice of America's retail investors, customers executed nearly 10 million trades per day in the first two weeks of the month, a 36 per cent jump from trading activity earlier in the year. The firm additionally saw a surge in account openings. 'We've seen in the first part of April, two to three times the level of new accounts being opened,' said chief executive officer Rick Wurster on his earnings call. 'We think there are some clients that want to get into Schwab and buy the dip.' Robinhood Markets reported similar momentum with its equity trading volumes hitting four-year highs and options activity approaching record levels.
Rather than simply turning over their portfolios, though, retail investors were aggressively adding to their positions. According to JPMorgan Chase, they net bought US$40 billion of stocks in April alone, setting a new record for the largest monthly inflow. Analysis from Goldman Sachs, which tracks retail trading patterns through characteristics such as sub-tick price improvement typical of payment-for-order flow trades, confirms this unprecedented buying activity, with two-week rolling net flows surpassing even the intense buying seen during the Covid recovery.
Market history suggests buying dips has been a reliable strategy for retail investors. After the market decline of December 2018 (remember that?), the Covid-19 crash of 2020, and the inflation scare of 2022, markets consistently rewarded those willing to deploy capital during periods of stress. It works principally because it so often has. As Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a speech at the Milken Institute Global Conference last week: 'The entirety of our economic history can be distilled in just five words: 'Up and to the right'.'
Historically, a perceived 'Fed put' has underwritten the strategy, although what made this episode trickier to navigate is that the central bank was hamstrung by the administration's actions, and the administration, at least initially, didn't seem focused on market reactions. But with so much household wealth at stake, it eventually changed its stance, and the strategy once again delivered. This consistency, though, may have bred complacency about the risks.
The dot-com crash of 2000 shows how brutal markets can be when the pattern fails. As the selloff began, retail investors initially showed familiar resilience. ETrade added accounts – almost a million through to the end of 2001 – as investors tried to catch what they thought were market bottoms. But the approach failed catastrophically. 'We've come through a highly speculative technology bubble,' Charles Schwab himself admitted in March 2001. 'Maybe I should have been more emphatic about understanding that this was a temporary phenomenon.' The Nasdaq would take 15 years to reclaim its previous highs, and the experience scarred retail investors for a generation – the Fed's Survey of Consumer Finances shows the share of households directly owning stocks dropped from 21.3 per cent in 2001 to 13.8 per cent in 2013.
Yet here we are in 2025, and buying the dip has worked again. As investment strategist Ben Carlson notes, 'One of the reasons American exceptionalism exists is because we always buy the dip – it's ingrained in us that things will get better.'
The dot-com crash stands as the rare exception to what has otherwise been a remarkably successful strategy. But therein lies the risk: With each successful dip bought, more capital and conviction flow into the strategy. The very reliability of the pattern may be quietly building its own vulnerability. [SINGAPORE] Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto will be making a state visit to Singapore on Monday (Jun 16), in his first official visit to the Republic since his inauguration on Oct 20 last year. Accompanied by a delegation of ministers, Prabowo will meet Prime Minister Lawrence Wong for the eighth annual Singapore-Indonesia Leaders' Retreat, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Sunday. The Leader's Retreat is the highest-level platform between the two countries to discuss how to strengthen ties. While here, Prabowo will also call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who will host him at a state banquet. This is the first time both PM Wong and Prabowo are attending the Leader's Retreat in their current capacities – but not the first time they are meeting at the event. The leaders discussed topics ranging from cooperation in defence, the digital economy and the green economy, to potential investments in Indonesia's new capital of Nusantara in East Kalimantan. At this year's Leader's Retreat, PM Wong and President Prabowo are expected to review the close ties between Singapore and Indonesia, and discuss how to deepen cooperation in areas such as defence, the green economy and connectivity, MFA said. Ahead of the visit, Singapore and Indonesia on Friday signed three memorandums of understanding on cross-border electricity trade, carbon capture and storage, and a sustainable industrial zone. These were signed by Singapore's Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science and Technology Tan See Leng and Indonesia's Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia during the former's visit to Jakarta. Strong bilateral ties Singapore and Indonesia share a 'longstanding friendship', said MFA, noting that both countries have been collaborating closely with each other on a variety of bilateral issues. One such area in which progress has been made is the Expanded Framework Agreements, which entered into force on Mar 21, 2024. These comprise agreements dealing with air space management, defence cooperation and extradition of fugitives. The countries also have deep economic and people-to-people ties. Indonesia is Singapore's eight-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade of S$74.2 billion last year, indicated Singapore Department of Statistics data. The Republic has also been Indonesia's top source of foreign direct investments since 2014, clocking US$20.1 billion worth of such investments last year. Both countries are among each other's top source of visitor arrivals. Last year, Singapore had 2.49 million visitors from Indonesia, while Indonesia welcomed 1.4 million tourists from Singapore in 2023.

No way, locals say VENICE – If a bunch of irate Venetians have their way, the star-studded dream wedding that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancee, Ms Lauren Sánchez, are planning in the ancient city at the end of June could be a nightmare. On June 13 evening, representatives of various citizens groups gathered in a square near Rialto Bridge and vowed to organise a series of protests on June 26-28, when hundreds of guests are expected to descend on the lagoon city for the lavish nuptials of Mr Bezos and Ms Sánchez, a journalist. Although details of the festivities have been wrapped in secrecy, 'we have our moles', said Ms Federica Toninello, a protest organiser, revealing that one of the venues could be the Misericordia, a former charity-turned-events hall. 'Bezos will never get to the Misericordia,' she vowed, urging the roughly 300 people present to take a stand. 'We will line the streets with our bodies, block the canals with lifesavers, dinghies and our boats,' she said to loud applause. She spoke under a large banner that read, 'No Space (an image of a spaceship) for Bezos,' playing on his ownership of Blue Origin, a spaceflight venture. 'We have to block Bezos; we have to block this idea of this city' as a tourist haven that has driven up housing costs so that most ordinary Venetians can no longer afford to live here, she said. Their wedding coincides with peak season in Venice, as tens of thousands of visitors arrive in the city daily, prompting City Hall to impose a controversial entry fee on weekends and holidays. Protesters said they were also concerned that the logistics of the wedding, including security for some top-tier guests, will further disrupt the life of Venice's dwindling resident population. The guest list is not public, but Vogue reported that it could include Katy Perry, some of the Kardashians and Eva Longoria, all friends of the bride-to-be. And TMZ reported that Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King had been invited. Reported estimates of what the wedding might cost have been as high as US$21.5 million (S$27.5 million). Part of that cost involves taking a fleet of water taxis out of circulation. One taxi driver who will be involved in transporting guests for the wedding said he had been booked to be on call on June 25-30. City hall officials said that only 30 of the city's 280 water taxis had been booked, and that since Venice was accustomed to hosting major events, citizens would not be inconvenienced. More than 600 couples marry each year in Venice, 'recognised as a city of love on an international level', and this was just one wedding more, the statement said. Some Venetians think it's one wedding too many. On June12, activists unfurled a large banner with a bold red X over Mr Bezos' name from the steeple of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, on an island that will be another of the Bezos-Sánchez wedding venues. 'Let's make sure that Venice is not remembered as a postcard venue where Bezos had his wedding, but as the city that did not bend to oligarchs,' said another protester Na Haby Stella Faye. Blackstone said to be in talks to buy embattled Allegiant resort

BLACKSTONE is in talks to purchase Allegiant Travel's Sunseeker resort, moving the parent of Allegiant Airlines closer to shedding the beleaguered retreat that had been a drag on earnings, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The two companies are still negotiating and talks could fall apart, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is not public. It was not immediately clear what price is being discussed. Representatives for Allegiant and Blackstone declined to comment. Blackstone last month registered an entity named Sunseeker Resort Owner LLC with the Florida Division of Corporations, along with others named Sunseeker Expansion I LLC, Sunseeker Expansion II LLC and Sunseeker Golf Owner LLC. Allegiant built the resort in Port Charlotte, Florida, as part of an effort by former chief executive officer John Redmond to extend Allegiant Travel's hold on consumers beyond arranging trips and flying passengers. The 785-room compound was troubled from the start, with construction suspended during the coronavirus pandemic and damage from hurricanes that further delayed work. The resort was finished four years late and US$200 million over budget, and occupancy rates did not meet projections. Overall, the campus cost US$720 million to build. Allegiant said in July it had hired Prospect Hotel Advisors LLC to advise it on options for the resort, including a sale of all or part of the sprawling property. Blackstone is a longtime lodging industry investor. Last year, the company struck deals for the W Fort Lauderdale and the Hyatt Regency Clearwater.
