TN to launch door delivery of ration items to elderly, differently abled
The "Chief Minister's Thayumanavar Scheme" will be launched by Stalin here, wherein ration items including rice and sugar will be delivered to the intended beneficiaries at their doorsteps, an official release said.
Senior citizens of over 70 years and differently abled ration card holders are the targeted beneficiaries of the scheme.
Around 20.42 lakh senior citizens and over 1.27 lakh differently abled persons would benefit from the scheme, it said.
As part of the initiative, the ration items will be door-delivered to the beneficiaries every second Saturday and Sunday and the relevant details have already been received from the Food and Consumer Protection department and shared with the field staff concerned, it said.
The staff will deliver the items to eligible beneficiaries. They would be provided with an electronic weighing machine and e-PoS (point of sale) machine as part of the initiative, it said.
"The pro-people move would cost the government a sum of Rs 30.16 crore and the government aims to ensure the welfare of the marginalised sections of the society," the release added.

CITING THE arrests and murders of journalists in the state, the opposition on Tuesday questioned the government whether it would bring 'Patrakar Suraksha Kanoon' to ensure security of journalists. During question hour, SP MLA Sachin Yadav asked, 'Will the government bring Patrakar Suraksha Kanoon for the security of journalists in the state?' While elaborating on his supplementary question, Sachin spoke about how journalists were arrested while covering an exam paper leak case on Ballia and cited the recent murder of a journalist in Sitapur. Pointing out that several cases were registered against journalists during the Covid pandemic period, he claimed that less than one fourth of these cases led to convictions. He asked the government if it would form such a committee to look into 'Right to access for investigation, Minimum wages for freelance journalists, Minimum advertisement to all, Censorship appeal to neutral committee and also protection against FIR until investigation…' To this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna responded by saying that the SP MLAs should be aware of the 'links of those involved in killing the journalist in Sitapur…' Khanna asserted that the government respects journalists and also appreciates their contribution and, when prompted by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who was sitting next to him, also emphasised that the government also gave Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia on the death of journalists during the pandemic period. Khanna also alleged that instead journalists were harassed during the erstwhile SP government. Claiming that the government is working to ensure security of all, including journalists, Khanna informed the house that there is already a district level committee made for the purpose, which comprises the Superintendent of Police of that respective district, four senior journalists and officials of the Information Department as members, which meets once in two months to tackle such issues.

Colleges in Marathwada accused of demanding fees from economically weaker section girls despite free education scheme
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Educational activists on Tuesday alleged that some Marathwada colleges were demanding partial fees from girls belonging to the economically weaker section (EWS) category, despite Maharashtra govt's scheme offering free higher education to girls belonging to specified categories. "Colleges mislead girl students and their parents by claiming that only a partial waiver is offered by govt in fees and they should pay exam fees and other expenses. Fearing academic loss, girl students or their parents often do not raise complaints against such claims," educational activist Prashant Sathe said. According to a govt decision announced last July, girl students from EWS, SEBC and OBC categories with an annual family income of Rs 8 lakh or less are eligible for free higher education in govt-approved institutes. Despite this, some colleges in Marathwada allegedly continued to demand fees from such beneficiaries. The joint director of education (higher) for the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division had warned colleges against this practice last Aug. The education department authorities said no formal complaint was received from girls or their parents about the alleged charging of fees during the current academic year. "It is a very serious matter if eligible girls are denied free education, and the institutes concerned will be responsible for future action against them. Students and parents are requested to lodge a complaint if fees are charged," a senior education department official said. Educational activist Tukaram Saraf said govt must launch a helpline number for girl students. "A centralised mechanism is necessary to address such complaints. PM Modi to inaugurate UER-II, Dwarka Expressway on Sunday
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the 76-km UER-II, which has been developed as the third Ring Road of Delhi, and the Dwarka Expressway (29 km) on Sunday. These two roads are a key part of the Centre's Delhi decongestion plan and are expected to reduce congestion on the Ring Road and other arterial links of Delhi. The two interlinked access-controlled highways will ensure nonstop travel for vehicles coming from Chandigarh side towards IGI airport, Gurgaon and Jaipur. Sources said that all pending works have been completed. While Dwarka Expressway has been developed in four packages and cost around Rs 9,000 crore, the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) was divided in five packages and has been built at a total cost of Rs 7,716 crore. Though the Dwarka Expressway is fully operational, Modi had inaugurated the Haryana section of this high-speed corridor in Mar 2024, just ahead of the last Lok Sabha election. As per National Highways Authority of India, the UER-II starts from Alipur on NH-44 in Delhi and connects NH-9 and NH-48 in the national capital. The project was conceptualised as a part of Delhi Master Plan 2021.
