Mandela Day clean-up sparks ongoing taxi rank renewal in Carletonville
The usually bustling Carletonville taxi rank took on a new look this Mandela Day, as it was transformed into a beacon of community pride and civic responsibility. Volunteers from all walks of life joined taxi operators in a massive clean-up effort on July 18, setting the tone for an ambitious campaign aimed at restoring dignity to public transport spaces. This clean-up, while symbolic of Mandela's legacy of service, was not just a once-off event. It marked the launch of a long-term initiative by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) West Gauteng Region, backed by local stakeholders and government agencies. The campaign will continue into October's Transport Month and beyond, with the goal of maintaining taxi ranks as safe, clean, and respected community hubs. 'Taxi ranks are not just places where people pass through. They are vital economic and social centres that serve millions of South Africans every day,' said a SANTACO representative. Volunteers tackled grime, litter, and disrepair, breathing new life into one of the town's most important public spaces. The effort turned Mandela's call for active citizenship into tangible action, while setting an example for similar initiatives in other areas. Organisers emphasised that the vision is one of sustainability, where collaboration between taxi operators, commuters, municipalities, and private partners will ensure continuous upkeep and community involvement. If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for transforming neglected infrastructure into vibrant, functional, and respectful environments across South Africa.

War veterans remember fallen comrades [Pics]
VETERANS of the South African Defence Force (SADF), South African Police (SAP), and those who served in the Rhodesian Bush Wars, gathered for their annual Veterans Day on July 26 at the Mills Bomb Shellhole in Warner Beach. Also read: Act empowers police against transgressing scrapyards The grizzled veterans paid homage to fallen comrades lost in the line of duty between 1966 and 1989. They proudly paraded in their military regalia, adorned with medals, ribbons, patches and other insignia that each tells its own story. The honour and discipline of old shone through as veterans saluted those who paid the ultimate price during the time of The Bush Wars. Mills Bomb Shellhole Moth, Russell Andraos, said that it is unfortunate that they have become the 'Forgotten Soldiers from a forgotten war.' 'Youngsters of today often do not even know guys like us actually did go to war. This parade is to remember the guys we lost on the border, some in accidents, some in battle. We're here to honour their sacrifices and to keep our history alive,' said Andraos. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Due to planned maintenance, Eskom has scheduled a nine-hour power outage in parts of Soweto, Gauteng. The maintenance is scheduled for Thursday, 7 August, from 9:00 to 18:00. Eskom said there will be an electricity supply disruption in Soweto due to maintenance that will be conducted on the distribution network. The planned power outage is set to affect customers in Doornkop Blocks 5 and 7, Molapo, Moroka, and Rockville on Thursday, 7 August from 9:00 to 18:00 as mentioned above. The interruption of electricity is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,' the power utility said. 'Eskom in Gauteng conducts planned maintenance on the distribution electricity network across the province as part of its maintenance plan. Maintenance needs to be conducted to service the infrastructure to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity supply.' For safety reasons, Eskom advises customers to assume that all electrical appliances remain live throughout the power outage. 'We appreciate your cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience this maintenance may cause,' Eskom said. The power provider also noted that unforeseen circumstances could prevent the scheduled maintenance in Soweto from going ahead as planned.
