Mainland CPI unchanged amid producer deflation

The mainland's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, remained unchanged from a year ago in July, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed on Saturday.
The producer price index (PPI), which measures costs for goods at the factory gate, went down 3.6 percent.
On a month-on-month basis, the CPI edged up 0.4 percent, against a 0.1 percent drop in June and above an expected 0.3 rise.
The 3.6 percent decline in the PPI missed economists' forecast of a 3.3 percent slide. It fell 3.6 percent in June too. (Xinhua/Reuters)

Both coalition partners know that open squabbling will turn off voters after discord brought down Scholz's three-party coalition, and play into the hands of the far-right Alternative for Germany Party. File photo: Reuters The US commerce department has started issuing licenses to Nvidia to export its H20 chips to China, an official said, removing a significant hurdle to the AI bellwether's access to a key market. Washington last month reversed an April ban on the sale of the H20 chip to China. The company had tailored the microprocessor specially to the Chinese market to comply with the Biden-era AI chip export controls. The curbs will slice US$8 billion off sales from its July quarter, the chipmaker has warned. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang met with Trump on Wednesday, two sources said. The company said in July it was filing applications with the US government to resume sales to China of the H20 graphics processing unit, and had been assured it would get the licenses soon. It is unclear how many licenses may have been issued, which companies Nvidia is allowed to ship the H20s to, and the value of the shipments allowed. Nvidia disclosed in April that it expected a US0$5.5 billion charge related to the restrictions. In May, Nvidia said the actual first-quarter charge due to the H20 restrictions was US$1 billion less than expected because it was able to reuse some materials. Nvidia said last month that its products have no "backdoors" that would allow remote access or control after China raised concerns over potential security risks in the H20 chip. Exports of Nvidia's other advanced AI chips, barring the H20, to China are still restricted. Successive US administrations have curbed exports of advanced chips to China, looking to stymie Beijing's AI and defense development. While this has impacted US firms' ability to fully address booming demand from China, one of the world's largest semiconductor markets, it still remains an important revenue driver for American chipmakers. Huang has said the company's leadership position could slip without sales to China, where developers were being courted by Huawei Technologies with chips produced in China. In May, Nvidia said the H20 had brought in US$4.6 billion in sales in the first quarter and that China accounted for 12.5 percent of overall revenue during the period. (Reuters)

China's consumer prices flat in July, while producer deflation persists
China's consumer prices were unchanged last month from a year ago and producer deflation persisted, suggesting that demand remains weak in the world's second-largest economy amid trade turbulence. Advertisement The national consumer price index (CPI), a key gauge of inflation , was flat in July compared to a year ago, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Saturday. The reading beat market expectations, as a poll by financial provider Wind had forecast a 0.12 per cent decline for July. In June, the CPI rose by 0.1 per cent, year on year after four straight months of decline. 'Policies to expand domestic demand showed results in July, resulting in a 0.4 per cent rise in CPI from June,' said Dong Lijuan, a senior statistician at the bureau. China is grappling with persistent deflationary pressures , driven by a dual challenge of sluggish domestic demand and oversupply, with trade uncertainty hindering suppliers' ability to clear excess inventory. Advertisement In July, consumer goods prices declined by 0.4 per cent from a year earlier, while service prices rose by 0.5 per cent, according to the statistics bureau. Food prices fell by 1.6 per cent. Prices for other goods and services as well as clothing increased by 8 per cent and 1.7 per cent, respectively, while housing saw a rise of 0.1 per cent.
