Nigerian forces kill 150 criminals during gunfight, airstrikes

Nigerian soldiers killed at least 150 members of a criminal gang in an ambush in northwestern Kebbi state this week, a local official said Thursday.
For years, heavily armed kidnapping gangs known as "bandits" have been intensifying attacks in the northwest and central areas of the west African country with impunity, killing thousands and abducting people for ransom.
Troops laid ambush on a massive convoy of bandits as they rode through villages in Kebbi state's Danko-Wasagu district on Wednesday, leading to a two-hour gunfight, said Husaini Bena, the political administrator of Danko-Wasagu.
The heavily armed bandits, riding on around 350 motorcycles, were heading to their base in neighbouring Niger state when they were ambushed by the troops, Bena said.
"More than 150 bandits were killed in the military operation which involved ground troops and fighter jets," he said.
The military forced the bandits to retreat, but jets "bombed them as they fled", he added.
Nigeria's air force has come under scrutiny in the past for bombing civilians in its campaigns against bandits and jihadists, as the country slogs through conflicts across multiple fronts.
AbdulRahman Zagga, director of security in the Kebbi state governor's office, confirmed the incident in a statement.
He said troops fought around 400 bandits, "resulting in the elimination of many" of them, without giving a toll.
Zagga said that bandits were suspected to be the same group that recently attacked a military base in Niger state, killing 20 soldiers.
Troops continued to comb the countryside on Thursday.

Nigeria's banditry crisis has evolved from clashes between Fulani herders and farmers over resources into a broader conflict fuelled by arms trafficking, with gangs taking advantage of security vacuums in rural swaths of Nigeria that have long had little formal state presence.
The gangs launch attacks from their camps in a vast forest which straddles several northwestern and central states.
Security analysts have noted increasing cooperation between the criminal gangs, who are motivated primarily by financial gains in the impoverished country, and jihadists, who are waging a 16-year-old insurrection in the northeast.

As the insurgent campaign by Boko Haram and rival Islamic State West Africa Province drags on, the Nigerian military said Thursday it killed 24 jihadists in northeastern Borno state following days-long military operations.
But gains against bandits and jihadists are repeatedly offset by the killing of troops and civilians.
Last month, authorities in Zamfara state in the northwest said a government-supported militia killed 100 bandits in a raid on their stronghold.
On Wednesday, Katsina state authorities claimed at least 30 bandits were killed in air strikes.
But over the weekend, bandits killed more than 40 vigilantes who had mobilised to fight them, in an ambush in central Plateau state.

India's tax department investigating Jane Street over possible tax treaty misuse, sources say
NEW DELHI: India's tax authorities are investigating whether Jane Street violated tax laws by booking profits via its Singapore entities on its derivative trades in the Indian market, three sources briefed on the matter said. Searches at the U.S. trading firm's India offices by the income tax department have been underway since last week, sources have said. A government source who was briefed on the matter later said that Jane Street staff were not cooperating. The tax authorities' enquiries follow a temporary ban by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the market regulator, which publicly alleged that the firm manipulated stock indexes through its derivatives positions. Jane Street has denied the SEBI allegations, but has not made any public comments so far on the tax investigation. The firm did not respond to a Reuters request sent to its U.S. headquarters for comment on Monday on the latest developments. India's income tax department did not respond to Reuters request for comment. Tax authorities are investigating whether Jane Street violated the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR) by using the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between India and Singapore to evade taxes on large profits it made on Indian derivative trades, all three sources said. The sources declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media. Jane Street not co-operating in ongoing probe, says India government source The DTAA is designed to prevent residents from being taxed twice, while the GAAR gives a country the power to deny a particular tax benefit if it is being used solely for tax avoidance. The Indian tax authorities are looking into whether Jane Street booked larger profits on its derivatives positions in the Indian market via its Singapore entities as a way to reduce the tax burden, all three sources briefed on the matter added. SEBI's July 4 ban order showed that Jane Street made more than $4 billion trading in India from January 2023 to May 2025. Jane Street's two India entities - JSI Investments and JSI2 Investments - made a profit of 39.35 billion Indian rupees ($448.23 million), Jane Street Singapore made a profit of 256 billion rupees ($2.92 billion) and its Hong Kong entity, Jane Street Asia Trading, made a profit of 69.30 billion Indian rupees ($789.39 million), the order showed. If the tax department's probe shows the tax rules have been breached, Jane Street could be issued with a tax demand, the third source said. Tax authorities are trying to access Jane Street's accounts, which are maintained overseas, they added. The second source said SEBI had provided the tax department with the profit and loss details of four Jane Street group entities the regulator had named in its orders. SEBI did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Ukrainian drone attack sparks fire at railway station in Volgograd region, Russia says
A Ukrainian drone attack damaged a power line and sparked a fire at a railway station building in Russia's southern region of Volgograd overnight, the regional administration said on Monday. An unexploded drone fell on railway tracks near the Archeda train station, the administration of the region said on the Telegram messaging app, citing Volgograd region's governor, Andrei Bocharov as saying. 'No damage to the tracks has been reported,' the administration said. Russian state news agency TASS reported several regional trains were delayed in the area. Flights at the regional airport in the city of Volgograd, which is the administrative centre of the broader Volgograd region, were halted for several hours before resuming at around 0300 GMT, Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia said on Telegram. Russia's defence ministry said that its units destroyed a total of 61 Ukrainian drones overnight, including six over the Volgograd region.
