From NE to int'l acclaim: Kurbah's ‘Ha Lyngkha Bneng' shines at Moscow film fest

and Best Director award at the recent 47th
Moscow International Film Festival
. It also received the NETPAC Award for the Best Asian Film.

The festival had 13 films from 13 countries participating in the main competition. Spanish filmmaker Luis Miñarro gave out the Golden Saint George and said the film's title can be interpreted "as a place where superior souls meet." The film is co-written by Paulami Dutta with sound design and mixing engineering by Saptak Sarkar and Sayantan Ghosh.
Cornel Gheorghita, one of the jury members said, "This is a very important film, which took me to a new level in world cinema when Sokurov, Kurosawa and Beckett came together."
Aleksey German Jr, another jury member said, "It is an incredibly bold film by a courageous, smart, subtle and perfectly humane director who did exactly what one shouldn't do to win at a festival — he removed all powerful narratives and themes and took people's feelings and emotions instead."
The 123-minute-long film was awarded for its philosophical expression of life and death through a "brilliant poetic visual language" enriched with "satire and humour," said Premendra Mazumder, the president of NETPAC jury.
"It is a cinematic gem from India," he added.
Kurbah, a self-taught director, said, "This is a small step forward for Indian independent cinema, which keeps trying to tell stories from the heart, even if they are not part of the mainstream. For films from the Northeast, it's a quiet but proud moment to see that even small, personal stories from our region can find their place and be accepted by audiences across the world."

Kurbah's film is set in the Khasi Hills in 2047, also the year when India celebrates its centenary of independence. Six characters live in a village. "It has seen mass migration to cities and is not well connected by a motorable road, and faces intermittent power cuts. The geographical space amplifies their loneliness and loss, but the characters look for joy and embrace solitude. While one of them tries to get electricity to the village, another has found a family in a goat, and another decides to choose laughter at every place she has cried before," said writer Dutta.
Kurbah and Dutta devoted four years intermittently to finalise the first draft. The film was written during the pandemic when both were stuck in Bengaluru.

The experience, he said, had reminded him of life's essential truths, much like his time filming 'Raanjhaana' in Banaras, amidst funeral pyres. "Greed, money, worldly pleasures-they're nothing," the actor had said. "What matters is a pure soul. 'Kuberaa' will make you realize that. I am 2000% confident about the impact this film will have." Apart from Nagarjuna and Dhanush, the film will also feature actors Jim Sarbh and in pivotal roles. The film, which is to hit screens on June 20 this year, is keenly awaited as this is the first time that National-award winning actor Dhanush has joined hands with ace filmmaker Sekhar Kammula. Filmmaker Manish Gupta booked for allegedly stabbing driver with kitchen knife over pay dispute
Filmmaker Manish Gupta was booked for allegedly injuring his driver with a kitchen knife after an argument over the latter's salary, a Mumbai police official said on Friday. The incident took place on Thursday night in Gupta's residence in Sagar Sanjog building, the Versova police station official said. Gupta allegedly injured his driver of three years, Rajibul Islam Lashkar (32), the official said. Gupta has been booked under sections 118(2), 115(2) and 352 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon, intentional insult to provoke breach of peace and other offences, but is yet to be arrested, he added. Lashkar's advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh sought the immediate arrest of Gupta. According to a Free Press Journal report, the FIR stated that Lashkar had worked with the filmmaker for three years, for a salary of ₹23,000. However, Lashkar alleged that he was never paid on time. On May 30, Gupta allegedly sacked him without clearing his dues. To earn back his money, Lashkar rejoined duty, but was still not paid, the driver claimed. This led to a verbal argument between the two on Friday night at the filmmaker's Versova residence. Lashkar alleges that Gupta stabbed him with a kitchen knife during the argument. Lashkar then rushed to the nearby Cooper Hospital and after receiving medical treatment, filed an FIR against the filmmaker at the Versova Police Station. A screenwriter and director, Manish Gupta has directed films like The Stoneman Murders and 420 IPC. His last directorial venture was the 2023 legal drama, One Friday Night, which starred Raveena Tandon and Milind Soman. He had earlier served as a writer in Ramgopal Varma's team, writing the screenplay of films like D and Sarkar. (With PTI inputs)

Will Adam Pearce replace Jey Uso at MITB 2025 with a WWE veteran?
Things are looking rough for Jey Uso heading into Money in the Bank 2025. On this week's episode of Monday Night RAW, Seth Rollins and his crew launched a vicious attack on Jey. To make matters worse, Bronson Reed hit him with multiple Tsunamis, leaving fans seriously worried about how Jey's holding up—especially with a huge tag team match just days away. Jey is scheduled to team up with Cody Rhodes this Saturday to take on John Cena and Logan Paul. But after what went down on RAW, there's real concern he won't be cleared to compete. And that's not the only thing on Jey's plate. He's also got to defend his World Heavyweight Title against Gunther next week on RAW. Between that and all the enemies he's got right now—Rollins' crew, Cena and Logan, and Gunther—he's being pulled in every direction. It's no surprise that RAW GM Adam Pearce might have to step in and pull Jey from the tag match at MITB for the sake of his health. If Jey's not at 100%, Gunther could easily take advantage and walk out with the gold. Jey Uso's got a brutal week ahead of him—if he can even make it to Saturday. And right now, nothing feels guaranteed.
