Scarlett Johansson becomes highest grossing actor with Jurassic World: Rebirth

Muscat Daily07-07-2025
Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has officially clawed her way into the record books, becoming the highest-grossing lead actor of all time — and it's all thanks to her dino-powered performance in Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Best known for her role as Marvel's Black Widow, Johansson has now taken the reins of another blockbuster franchise, stepping in where Jurassic World's Chris Pratt left off. But forget the raptor-whispering routine — in Rebirth, Johansson plays Zora Bennet, a former military operative on a high-stakes mission to retrieve life-saving genetic samples while dodging the teeth and tails of prehistoric predators.
It's a roaring role, and Johansson is clearly not doing it for free — at least not at the box office. According to The Numbers, her lifetime earnings from films where she plays the lead or shares top billing (including the Sing animated films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe) have now reached a staggering $14.8bn. That puts her ahead of previous record-holder Samuel L. Jackson, who held the title with $14.6bn.
As Rebirth continues to stomp its way through global box office charts, it seems Johansson is enjoying a career high — and audiences are loving every action-packed minute. With dinos, danger, and a lead star at the top of her game, Jurassic World: Rebirth is proving to be a wild ride into cinema history.

Superhero films ignite rivalry among Marvel and DC comic fans

Comic fans are embracing the latest showdown between Marvel and DC as their superhero films "Fantastic Four" and "Superman" compete for box office dominance, reigniting a rivalry spanning over eight decades. Whether it's the thrill of seeing the comic book superhero The Thing shout "It's clobbering time!" before throwing a punch or watching Superman and his faithful pup Krypto save the day, fans are heading to movie theaters to support their favorite films. "Well, clearly I'm a Marvel fan," Danielle Stroski, who was dressed as the shapeshifter character named Mystique from Marvel's X-Men comics, at the San Diego Comic-Con. "But I have a little white dog at home, so I love me some 'Superman' as well. And I know the little white dog is stealing the show for 'Superman,' so it's going to be close. But I got to go Marvel," she added. The 42-year-old from California predicted "Fantastic Four" would outperform "Superman" at the box office. DC fan Lito Loza, dressed as Superboy, voiced his support for "Superman." "I've already seen 'Superman' three times, and I'm very, very happy with what James Gunn did with it. It makes me feel hopeful," he said, referring to the director. The filmmakers, meanwhile, encourage fans to support both movies. "I'm a huge Superman fan. I'm a huge James Gunn fan. I'm thrilled that both of us are coming out this month," director Matt Shakman of "Fantastic Four: First Steps" told Reuters at the London premiere. "I think we share a lot of similar optimism in our tone and our feeling in the worlds that we're building. And there's room for 'Superman,' there's room for 'Fantastic Four.' I'm thrilled. Go see both," he added. "Superman" director Gunn, who directed the Marvel movie "Guardians of the Galaxy", said in an interview in Los Angeles that he grew up reading both Marvel and DC comic books, appreciating their distinct tones. In theaters on July 11, "Superman" introduced David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. The movie grossed around $173 million globally and $264 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. Warner Bros has heavily invested in "Superman," aiming to launch a new era at DC Studios under Gunn, named co-CEO, alongside producer Peter Safran. Upcoming projects include a Supergirl film slated for June 2026, a film based on the character Swamp Thing as well as TV shows for HBO Max. Disney said "Fantastic Four," which stars Pedro Pascal, opened with $24.4 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada on Thursday night while Daniel Loria, senior vice president at Boxoffice predicts that "Fantastic Four: First Steps" will open domestically at $115 million to $135 million. While sales are currently around $115 million to $125 million, he said there was an increase in ticket purchases over the last week that will likely bring sales to the $115 million to $135 million range. —Reuters

Aliens expected to trade blows with Captain America in an upcoming comic

By OUR CORRESPONDENT San Diego – Ever wondered what its like to see a fan-favourite Marvel superhero fight against those terrifying creatures from the Alien franchise? Well, imagine no more as the latest installation of the Xenomorph invasion of the Marvel Universe comics- Alien vs. Captain America is said to release this fall. Alien vs. Captain America is a story about well, Captain America himself. Set against the background of Europe during the days of World War II, the masked superhero is forced to fight against his arch nemesis Red Skull's newest biological weapons—the Xenomorphs. This mini-series is said to be a continuation of the well-received Aliens vs. Avengers series written by Jonathan Hickman, which merged these familiar stories into one innovative and shocking narrative. During the convention, fans realized what this comic series was attempting to do: make these creatures appear as threatening as possible. That is probably why they made Captain America, one of the most human Avengers in the team, fight these awful creatures all by himself this time. Only time will tell who will emerge victorious in this action-packed battle that will be published by Marvel Comics starting from 1st November 2025. So, mark your calendars, save up some money and prepare yourselves for a sci-fi, WWII horror superhero brawl.

Marvel says its time to recast the X-men, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers for their upcoming films

Superhero enthusiasts have their new avengers and their new Fantastic Four team, but they've yet to see or hear anything about the new X-men team until today. Longtime Marvel film producer Kevin Feige admits that after the release of Avengers: Secret Wars, the company will recast their lovable mutants for newer X-Men movies. Exciting fans with the endless possibilities of X-Men content they can expect to enjoy across the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe over the next 5 years. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammer will reprise their roles as the aforementioned 'X-men'one last time in the upcoming Secret Wars movie releasing next year. All before they pass the hypothetical torch to a new generation of actors and take their final bow at Marvel Studios. Longtime fans are beginning to realise that the cinematic reset may arrive sooner than expected. 'Endgame was, quite literally, about endings. Secret Wars is about beginnings,' Kevin Feige said, reassuring fans that what lies ahead marks the dawn of something new—and exciting. But the announcements don't stop there. After 5 years of Marvel fans mourning the loss of actors Robert Downey Jr. as the witty Tony Stark and Chris Evans as the idealistic Steve Rogers, Marvel is finally ready to consider recasting new actors in these familiar roles. So it's confirmed that Iron-Man and Captain America will return to film screens sometime soon, just not in the way everyone initially suspected. While it can be difficult for us to picture anyone else playing the part, Marvel has consistently proven to us that they are capable of making the impossible possible – in fiction and in reality. Let's hope that whoever they end up choosing for these roles will be just as brave and daring as the heroes that came before them.
