PKR veep rubbishes claims 11 MPs retracting support for Anwar

PKR vice-president Chang Lih Kang said Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad resigned from their Cabinet posts to uphold the spirit of democracy.
PETALING JAYA : PKR vice-president Chang Lih Kang has rubbished claims that 11 MPs from the party are retracting their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the party's president.
Responding to a text message making the rounds on WhatsApp, Chang, a federal minister, said the claim was 'nonsense'.
'Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad resigned from their Cabinet posts to uphold the spirit of democracy. Other parties need not fish in troubled waters,' he said in a Facebook post.
The viral message claimed that 11 MPs have withdrawn their support for Anwar as the prime minister, including Chang, who was a running mate of Rafizi in the recently concluded PKR central leadership elections.
The others listed in the message include Rafizi and others aligned with him, such as Nik Nazmi, PKR vice-president Aminuddin Harun, Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasir, Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar, Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Subang MP Wong Chen and Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing.
The message claimed that the MPs would be holding a press conference on Friday on their decision to retract their support for Anwar.
Nik Nazmi had also lost in the PKR central leadership polls, failing to defend his vice-presidency.
Chang was retained as a PKR vice-president, while the other three posts were filled by Aminuddin, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari and Sungai Buloh MP R Ramanan.
Earlier today, Rafizi and Nik Nazmi resigned from their posts as economy minister and natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, respectively.
Bernama quoted political analyst Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia as saying that it was possible that other ministers or deputy ministers aligned with Rafizi would also step down from their posts.

Government pays attention to state requests in determining 13MP project priority

PENAMPANG: The federal government always takes into consideration the needs and requests of all states in determining the priority of projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the priority of projects could not be determined solely by the federal government and, instead, is jointly decided with the state governments after their requests are heard and attended to by the Federal leadership. Citing Sabah, Anwar said that in almost every working visit he has made to the state, meetings or gatherings are held between leaders and senior federal and state officials to directly discuss requests from the state government. "I'm not saying that 13MP (projects) do not take place, previously there are requests which are vetted by the Federal ministries… now no more, (as) requests are made directly (at meetings) chaired by the prime minister, there are chief ministers, there are state ministers. "We listen and pay attention directly. Frankly, this only happens because of uniformity, (as well as) good and close relationships due to mutual trust," he said when he attended the Sabah state-level Kaamatan Festival celebration here today. The event, held at Dewan Hongkod Koisaan, Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), was also attended by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam and KDCA president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan. Anwar also expressed his gratitude to Hajiji and the Sabah government for their openness to cooperating with the leaders and federal government in a bid to develop and elevate the dignity of Malaysia and Sabah. Anwar emphasised that the spirit to strengthen Sabah must be nurtured through the strong unity between the Federal and state governments within the framework of the Federation. As such, he reminded everyone not to raise issues that can erode that good relationship simply for political mileage, especially ahead of the Sabah election. "In the battle leading up to this election… leaders who have led before, who were together, sometimes forget just to ramp up the political atmosphere, raising issues that erode confidence in the country… this is not healthy," he said. Anwar said the federal government and the states, particularly Sabah and Sarawak, have many diversity and differences, but this must be seen as a strength for Malaysia as a country for the wellbeing of its people. He said that when Malaysia was established, "Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu" (Unity is Strength) was chosen as the national motto to illustrate the importance of togetherness in diversity in strengthening the country. "Diversity can also be destructive, where there are countries in this world which initially embraced a multiracial and multi-religious society, but later experienced hostility between races, religions and regions. "Which nation can be successful like that, everything will end up in ruin. "So, no matter how difficult it is, any sensible leader in a political campaign to fight for the post of state assemblyman or members of Parliament must remember never to sacrifice the state or country," he said.

Kuching police confirm Lamborghini driver reported fatal Jalan Airport accident, not hit-and-run

KUCHING, May 30 — Police have ruled out a hit-and-run in the fatal accident involving a Lamborghini and a pedestrian at Jalan Airport here on Tuesday evening. Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed yesterday that the 54-year-old businessman driving the Lamborghini came forward to lodge a police report within the required 24-hour timeframe. 'The Lamborghini driver lodged the police report an hour after the accident. He did not run but reported the incident,' he told The Borneo Post. He added that the driver was subsequently arrested to facilitate investigation and is now a suspect in the case. According to Alexson, the driver stated that he was travelling from Jalan Airport to Padungan when the incident occurred. Meanwhile, the police have identified the deceased pedestrian as Chinese national Bi Guang Dong, 52, a general worker involved in the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) lane construction. Alexson said Bi was crossing the road when he was struck by the Lamborghini. He was subsequently declared dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Sarawak General Hospital. 'In the meantime, the body of the deceased is still at the Sarawak General Hospital, awaiting claims from family members in China,' said Alexson. Police have classified the case as dangerous or reckless driving that results in death, an offence under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The Section provides for five to 10 years in jail and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000 upon conviction. Alexson urged witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact investigating officer ASP Lucas Apin on 013-8246881 or 082-259900, or to visit the nearest police station. — The Borneo Post
