The Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) enables collaboration among the entrepreneurial ecosystem including startups. BHASKAR is currently in the pilot phase, wherein key features are being tested including peer-to-peer interaction, partnerships, and collaborative engagements, generation of unique personalised identification for stakeholder categories and integration of micro-sites in place for implementation of various Schemes under 'Startup India'. The government is undertaking various outreach and awareness measures for BHASKAR across States/UTs to understand the requirement and experience of key user stakeholders including small and micro-enterprises, said Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. 'Such measures, include specific outreach to States/UTs, information sessions in workshops and events, and propagation through various social media platforms. These engagements have been undertaken in collaboration with State Startup Nodal Agencies and other ecosystem partners such as incubators, accelerators, colleges, and universities amongst others,' the minister emphasised. Meanwhile, the government said last week that a net commitment of Rs 9,994 crore has been made to 141 Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) supported under the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) scheme (till June 30), as it aims to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation. SISFS provides financial assistance to seed-stage startups through incubators. Rs 945 crore have been approved to 219 selected incubators (as of June 30), the minister said.

US tariff shock jolts Punjab exporters
The 25% tariff announced by US President Donald Trump has come as a big blow to Punjab's exporters, many of whom depend heavily on the American market to run their businesses. Industries in Punjab export yarn, textiles, hand tools, agri and tractor parts to the US, among other products. (HT file photo) With the new import duty set to take effect from August 7, industrialists say buyers may stop placing new orders and shift to countries like Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Turkey where goods will be cheaper due to lower tariffs. It is also expected to make importers hold back on placing new orders, say industrialists. Industries in Punjab export yarn, textiles, hand tools, agri and tractor parts to the US, among other products. 'The tariffs announced by the US President are not just disappointing but very worrying,' said Amit Thapar of Ganga Acrowools Limited in Ludhiana, which exports yarn to the US. Thapar, who is also the chairman of CII's (Northern Region) export committee, said, 'Textile exports worth approximately $10.05 billion were made from India to the US last year and this year till May, the exports have already grown by 13 %.' Punjab contributes a significant 28% to India's total textile export of $36 billion. 'But the problem now facing the industry in the state is lower tariffs on competing countries like Turkey (15%), Vietnam (20%), Pakistan (19%), Bangladesh (20%) and Sri Lanka (20%), all lower than India. This puts Indian exporters at a huge disadvantage. Buyers have been calling us. We will start holding meetings to chart the future path amid uncertainty. I hope the situation improves,' he added. SC Ralhan, president, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), who is the managing director of Ludhiana-based Sri Tool industries, said the tariffs were a major setback for the hand tools industry in Punjab that annually exports machinery worth ₹3,000 crore to the US. 'Our government is negotiating with exporters on this front. They are likely to compensate us, but if the tariff is implemented, it will be a huge setback. Countries like Vietnam and Turkey are set to benefit straight away,' he said. Upkar Singh Ahuja, president, Chamber of Commercial and Industrial Undertakings (CICU), said the industry in Punjab will be adversely hit, as besides textiles, hand tools machinery and auto parts were exported in huge quantities to the US. 'We are hopeful that the Indian government will provide a respite soon,' he said.

'No Fear, No Pressure': Govt Says India In A Strong Bargaining Position With Trump On Trade Tariffs
Last Updated: Commerce minister Piyush Goyal outlined the two pillars of the negotiations: one, Viksit Bharat, and two, Atmanirbhar No fear, no pressure—the government has made it clear that when it comes to dealing with the United States on trade tariffs, this will be the mantra. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal outlined the two pillars of the negotiations: one, Viksit Bharat, and two, Atmanirbhar. The US negotiating team is expected to arrive for a scheduled meeting on August 25. While New Delhi aims for a favourable deal with one of its biggest trade partners, it has made clear to American negotiators that India does not make deals under pressure or deadlines. Several reasons support the government's confidence, as highlighted by the commerce minister. India is a trillion-dollar growing economy and has risen to be the world's fifth-largest. This growth has captured the attention of global economies and economic experts, giving India a strong bargaining position. Additionally, the recently concluded trade agreement with the United Kingdom sends a strong message to the US and the world: India will negotiate deals that align with its national interest. Even regarding oil, India refuses to succumb to American pressure. Despite Trump imposing a 10% penalty for buying Russian oil, India has made it clear that it will buy from the supplier offering the best rate to benefit consumers. The ministry of external affairs echoed this stance, stating, 'In securing our energy needs, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets and by the prevailing global circumstances." According to government sources, Trump has also offered low tariffs to Pakistan and Bangladesh, but this does not concern India, as their trade is negligible. India remains powerful, strong, and resilient. Unlike other heads of state who have sought to persuade the American president to reduce tariffs, the Indian side has refused to compromise. In upcoming meetings with American negotiators, Indian representatives will firmly state their positions: no concessions in the agro sector, no easy access for American products to Indian markets, no GM foods, and no harm to the labour-intensive sector. The government believes American consumers could suffer from these stances since Indian products have flooded the market. Moreover, Tim Cook, the Apple CEO, has publicly praised Indian manpower for its unmatched excellence. With this high stance, the commerce minister has made it clear that India has nothing to worry about. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
