Coming soon: a hidden 3am cocktail contender for 2025's best new bar
A few years ago, the city boasted a bunch of cracking cocktail bars – Death & Taxes, Maker, The Gresham, Dr Gimlette, Savile Row – but not much else. While Brisbane's restaurant scene diversified, our smaller boozers felt stuck in a low gear, new operators seemingly unable, or unwilling, to take a swing on fresh ideas.
But then came Frog's Hollow and Alice and Barry Parade Public House, and wine bars suddenly got both more freewheeling and serious, with the opening of Dark Red, Milquetoast and Dark Red's new sister venue, Dark Blue. All have a unique angle or location, or a combination of the two.
Now comes The Alligator Club, a New Orleans-inspired basement bolthole due to open in the Valley in early August.

Where to get the BEST toasties in Perth
Fremantle Why is stuff between two slices of bread so damn good? This is the question you will be pondering as you tuck into one of the excellent sandwiches in the delightful cafe in Fremantle's West End. The kimchi and cheese is a particular favourite with kimchi, provolone, cheddar and swiss cheese, and given a little extra kick with kimchi salt. Out of this world. It is known for its excellent selection of toasties, including the classic ham and cheese and the nori and cheese, in addition to an menu full of drool-worthy Japanese-inspired cafe dishes like mushroom congee. Since first opening its doors in 2013, Toastface has slung out more melted cheese toasties than most of us have had hot dinners. Credit: Instagram We all know and love Kakulas Sister, so it's worth getting to know Little Sister, a deli that started out as a counter inside the beloved international grocer before branching out next door. Pop in for some bougie cheese, or charuterie, and while you're at it, grab a cheese toastie for lunch. Its classic involves eight cheeses, free range ham, onion jam and French butter. Delicious. From their chicken katsu sanger (yum) to their crispy Korean Chicken covered in gochujang and honey glaze (double yum) the worst thing about this place is choosing what to order. And if you're like 'that's all very well, but what's their toastie game like', the answer is: strong. Think smoked pastrami brisket with sauerkraut, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard. Or smoked ham, mojo pork swiss cheese, spicy pickles, pickled pinapple, jalapeno with honey mustard aioli. All toasted for a delicious winter lunch.

Mel B joined by Mel C for Spice Girls duet at wedding
Mel B teamed up with Mel C to perform a Spice Girls song at her second wedding celebration. The 50-year-old singer married Rory McPhee at London's St. Paul's Cathedral and earlier this month, she enjoyed a three-day second wedding at Selman Marrakech in Morocco and while her bandmate had been unable to make it to the first event, she and her boyfriend Chris Dingwall were in the midst of the overseas festivities. Mel B told Britain's HELLO! magazine: "It was great to have my fellow northerner Mel C there. "We had the best time together and totally forgot ourselves and went crazy when Holler came on. We've grown up together, all my family love her and to share that weekend with her and her lovely partner Chris was so special." Mel wore a sheer red Justin Alexander gown - which took six people more than 850 hours to make thanks to its hand-beaded detail - paired with a Moroccan-inspired cathedral veil because she wanted to look like a "floating mermaid". She explained: "As the sun went down, I wanted to look like a floating mermaid – a fiery red passionate one – gliding in ruby diamonds. "Morocco has that very red va-va-voom – it's passionate and spiritual." The celebration was a family affair, with all three of Mel's children from previous relationships having a role to play. Phoenix, 26, walked her mum down the aisle, while Angel, 18, was one of Rory's groomsmen and 13-year-old Madison was a bridesmaid. Mel said: "That meant the world to me. It was the most amazing day and was so full of love. It exceeded all our expectations." But the day wasn't without mishaps as Mel and Phoenix walked down the "wrong" part of the aisle. The singer said: "We get things wrong all the time and in true Brown tradition, we walked down the wrong side of the aisle instead of in the middle. "Even though Rory and I had overseen every detail of the wedding, I hadn't seen the aisle until I walked down there and it looked so beautiful I burst into tears. Phoenix was saying, 'Are you OK? What do I Do?' And I said, Phoenix, just hold my hand.' She said, 'Right, OK, you've got this Mum.' " The couple chose Morocco in honour of Mel's late father Martin, who died of cancer in 2017. She explained: "Morocco was the last place I went on holiday with my dad. The whole weekend was full of so much love and happiness. I could feel my dad swirling around everywhere."
