Only 15 electric vehicle brands in China will be financially viable by 2030, AlixPartners says

Reuters6 hours ago
BEIJING, July 3 (Reuters) - Only 15 out of the 129 brands that currently sell electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in China will be financially viable by 2030, as intense competition forces consolidation and some to exit the market, consultancy AlixPartners said on Thursday.
These 15 brands are projected to account for approximately 75% of China's EV and plug-in hybrid market by the end of the decade, each averaging annual sales of 1.02 million vehicles, AlixPartners said, without specifying brand names.
However, consolidation in China is expected to proceed more slowly than in other markets, said Stephen Dyer, head of AlixPartners' automotive practice in Asia, because local governments may support non-viable brands due to their importance to regional economies, employment and supply chains.
"China is one of the most competitive NEV (new energy vehicle) markets in the world, with intense price wars, rapid innovation, and new entrants constantly raising the bar," Dyer said.
"This environment has driven remarkable advances in technology and cost efficiency, but it has also left many companies struggling to achieve sustainable profitability."
China's automotive market, the world's largest, is currently facing a price war and significant overcapacity, both of which are straining profitability. Aside from BYD (002594.SZ), opens new tab and Li Auto (2015.HK), opens new tab, no other publicly listed Chinese EV maker has achieved full-year profitability.
Chinese regulators have called for automakers to halt the price war. However, Dyer said it would likely continue, but through "hidden" factors such as insurance subsidies and zero-interest financing rather than direct price cuts.
The capacity utilisation ratio at Chinese car plants fell to an average of 50% in China last year, the lowest in a decade, pressuring profits, Dyer said.

AirAsia strikes deal for up to 70 Airbus A321XLR jets as restructuring nears end

SEOUL, July 4 (Reuters) - AirAsia on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus ( opens new tab to buy 50 long-range A321XLR planes with conversion rights for another 20 of the single-aisle jets, as the budget airline nears the end of a restructuring process. Reuters reported last month that Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia owner Capital A Group ( opens new tab, was in talks to buy 50 to 70 of the latest Airbus narrow-body model, which would include the ability to convert some of the airline's large, existing Airbus order book into A321XLR orders. Malaysia-based AirAsia is one of Asia's largest low-cost carriers and one of Airbus' largest customers, with around 360 planes on order. Fernandes said the airline intends to order another 150 jets within a month, which would complete the carrier's fleet strategy for the time being. Fernandes did not say which models would be ordered, but confirmed that AirAsia remains in previously reported talks for a potentially large order of smaller planes, either the Airbus A220 or Embraer ( opens new tab E2 regional jet. Capital A, hard hit by pandemic travel restrictions, was classified by Malaysia's stock exchange as financially distressed in 2022. Fernandes hopes to exit this so-called PN17 status soon, he said. Capital A is in the process of selling its AirAsia aviation business to long-haul unit AirAsia X ( opens new tab to consolidate long and short-haul operations under a single AirAsia brand. After this disposal takes place, Capital A should exit PN17 status, Fernandes said. The expanded and standalone AirAsia, which will remain listed in Malaysia, intends to issue its first bond in October and two credit agencies are looking to rate the company, he said. AirAsia, which has a current fleet of 255, has been restructuring its plane order book after it faced financial difficulties during COVID-19. Like most budget airlines it mostly operates economy-only narrow-body planes. Fernandes said he was negotiating with Airbus about what to do with an historical order for 15 A330 wide-bodies but that he had not yet cancelled any. Fernandes wants to expand AirAsia flights to North America and Europe, but still at budget prices. Airbus' long-range narrow-body models are key to that vision, he says. But single-aisle planes can only fly so far, so AirAsia wants to establish hub airports in the Middle East, Europe and Asia-Pacific. AirAsia is in talks with four cities in the Gulf, including in Saudi Arabia and the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, Fernandes told Dubai Eye radio this week. Bahrain is also a potential candidate, a company presentation showed on Friday.

Airbus to sell more A330neo jets to Malaysia Airlines, sources say

PARIS, July 2 (Reuters) - Europe's Airbus ( opens new tab is close to winning an order from Malaysia Aviation Group for more A330neo long-haul jets, industry sources said on Wednesday. The parent of flag carrier Malaysia Airlines could announce the deal during a visit to Paris by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim later this week, they said. None of the companies immediately responded to requests for comment. MAG Managing Director Izham Ismail told the New Straits Times last month that the group was evaluating the possibility of exercising options for 20 A330neos, to be followed by a competition between planemakers to add larger Airbus A350s, Boeing 787s or Boeing 777X jets. In 2022, MAG ordered 20 A330neos and took out options for another 20.

Polestar Will Continue To Rely On Volvo, As It Grows Lineup Polestar has evolved from Volvo's in-house tuner into a separate brand with its own lineup of electric vehicles, but it's still sticking close to its parent brand. The Polestar 7, a smaller electric SUV due to arrive in 2028, will be built at a Volvo plant in Kosice, Slovakia, the two brands confirmed Thursday. 0:01 / 0:09 2025 Audi S3 VS 2025 Mercedes-AMG CLA 35: Which one comes out on top? Watch More The Polestar 7 will be the second model assembled at the newly-constructed Kosice plant, following a yet-to-be-announced Volvo. The plant itself has been under construction since 2023, and targets annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles when completed. All of those vehicles will be electric, according to Volvo. Component Sharing Continues As Well Source: Volvo In addition to a production site, the Polestar 7 will share a 'common technology base' with the upcoming Volvo EX60 and another one of that brand's new models, according to Volvo. That includes Volvo's next-generation motors and battery tech, including cell-to-body tech that mounts cells directly to the body structure, as well as mega-casting construction in which said structure is made from fewer, larger pieces for simplified assembly. The Polestar 7 will also share the Superset computing and software stack with the larger Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90, as well as the EX60 and the upcoming Volvo ES90 sedan. The stack is intended to make it easier to push new software-based features and updates. 'Our collaboration with Polestar on the development and manufacturing of the Polestar 7 underscores how Volvo Cars and Polestar continue to leverage synergies to efficiently deliver outstanding vehicles built for our distinct customer segments,' Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars, said in a statement. Its first production model, the handsome Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid coupe, was built at a dedicated factory in Chengdu, China. But its first volume model, the Polestar 2, is built at a Volvo plant in that country. The Polestar 2 is also based on the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) as the Volvo XC40, EX40, and EC40. Similarly, the Polestar 3 shares the SPA2 platform with the Volvo EX90, and U.S.-market vehicles are built alongside the EX90 at Volvo's South Carolina plant. Polestar 4 production for most markets is handled in China, but for the U.S., it's built at a Renault plant in Busan, South Korea, under a complicated arrangement responding to Biden Administration trade policies that disadvantaged China-made EVs. The Trump Administration's current global trade war could make it all for nought, though. The Polestar 5, a sleek fastback targeting the Porsche Taycan, and the Polestar 6, a sports car, are also in the queue, although production sites haven't been announced. Both are expected to use more bespoke Polestar engineering, including massive battery cells in the 5 aiming to boost range. But they're also likely to sell in much smaller volumes than the Volvo-derived Polestar 7. About the Author Stephen Edelstein View Profile
