The timing is right: Wales and Swansea midfielder Joe Allen announces retirement
Allen, who won 77 caps for Wales and was also a member of the 2012 Great Britain Olympic team, will play his final game for Swansea on Saturday.

The 35-year-old – who played a pivotal role as Wales reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and was named in the official team of that tournament – has made over 580 appearances in an 18-year senior career.

Allen started and ended his career at Swansea and also played for Wrexham, Liverpool and Stoke.
He reversed his February 2023 decision to retire from international football in October citing 'unfinished business' with Wales, but said ahead of his final game against Oxford: 'The timing's right. A lot of factors go into the decision, but when you get to 35 you're only getting worse.
'I still think I have some value and something to offer, but there's probably a line I didn't want to cross in terms of the level of performance I can give.

'I'm probably right up to that line at the moment. When you couple that with the injuries you accumulate over the years, I'm at that stage where I can't push things any further.
'It (the 2026 World Cup) was a big part of the decision. My instinct told me I wasn't going to get there. Or, if I did get there, it wasn't going to be at the level I wanted to be representing my country at a World Cup.
'So, it certainly made thinking about retirement a lot harder, with that on the horizon next summer.
'But, realistically, I didn't quite feel I was going to get there.'

Pembrokeshire-born Allen broke won promotion into the Premier League at Swansea in 2011 and helped establish them as a top-flight club, before Brendan Rodgers signed him for Liverpool in a £15million deal in 2012.

Allen made over 130 appearances for Liverpool and was a Premier League, League Cup and Europa League runner-up ahead of spending six years at Stoke and three more at Swansea.
'A few stand-outs would be the play-off final with Swansea, getting promoted to the Premier League, and the first season there,' said Allen.
'Also joining a huge and historic club in Liverpool and competing at the top of the Premier League with some unbelievable players.

'The Euros in 2016 is the stand-out, an amazing summer, but there's been many more.'

As well as Euro 2016, Allen featured at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to become one of the few Welshmen in three major tournaments.
Craig Bellamy, a former teammate, persuaded him to return to the international fold after succeeding Rob Page as Wales manager and Allen would add three more caps to his tally.
'When you see a player like him in training and the habits he has, you understand why he's had such a great career,' said Bellamy.

'I'm so appreciative of what he's been able to do for our country. He's been one of our greatest players. You want that to stay for longer.'

Semenyo reported the incident in the first-half of Liverpool's 4-2 win over the Cherries but then starred in the game with a brilliant brace. The following day, the 25-year-old Ghanaian international said on social media: 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.' He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans 'who showed their true character', and the Premier League officials 'who handled it professionally'.

Jamie Vardy 'desperate' to seal Celtic transfer as champions kick off 'talks' with £13m winger
It's claimed Vardy is desperate to play under Rodgers again after their time together at Leicester Jamie Vardy is reportedly 'desperate' to seal a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, while the Hoops are also said to have made contact with Feyenoord over winger Calvin Stengs. Rodgers has made it clear he wants more quality in the final third, ideally in time to be named as a late addition to the Champions League squad to face Club Brugge this week. The Hoops have already named their squad for that one but can add up to two new players right up until Wednesday night. Vardy would certainly fit the criteria Rodgers is looking for from his new No.9 and, even at 38, appears to have enough in the legs to seriously ramp up Celtic's firepower – he hit double figures last season even despite Leicester's relegation from the Premier League. A reunion with Rodgers, under whom Vardy scored 70 goals in 157 appearances from 2018 to 2022, certainly seems to appeal. The Sun say he's 'desperate' to make it happen and, while he isn't going to be short of offers to stay in the Premier League, the lure of a final crack at the Champions League is likely to be tempting. A new striker isn't of course all Celtic want in the next couple of weeks. It's been clear all summer they want a new winger too with a serious lack of depth beyond Daizen Maeda a concern for Rodgers. Jota isn't back until after Christmas and they've been linked with a number of new wide men in the mean time, most prominently Michel-Ange Balkikwisha. But now it appears they have moved on to Feyenoord's Calvin Stengs. At one point, Stengs was a £13m signing for Nice who was high on Barcelona's radar, but his career has hit the skids in recent months and he hasn't yet featured for Feyenoord this season. He's now 26 and finds himself at a career crossroads, one which Celtic look primed to take advantage of. CeltsAreHere report that contact has been made between Celtic and the player's representatives and it's believed he could be available for a cut-price fee as he enters the final two years on his contract. Stengs scored a free-kick against the Hoops in Feyenoord's 2-1 win in Holland in 2023 – a season where he scored eight goals and registered 17 assists, and was tracked closely by Barcelona. Deals for Vardy and Stengs could be the shot in the arm the Hoops need in the final third and Rodgers is confident he'll get the reinforcements he needs before the end of the window. Speaking to Premier Sports after their 4-1 win over Falkirk, he said: "Our whole idea is to be as prepared as we can by the end of the window. "Of course I'd love to have other players in, you saw tonight we had a midfield player wide and putting Scalesy into certain positions as well. So we need reinforcements. But I don't want to keep harping on about it. "I don't need to beg for players that we need. We work with the players who are here, they're doing great, and hopefully we'll get reinforcements by the end."

What is the Premier League record summer transfer window spending?
Premier League summer spending has been substantial once again, with the big clubs splashing the cash on a string of shiny new players. Liverpool have caught the eye in the transfer market with a couple of enormous purchases, and possibly more to come. Manchester United have not been too far behind with their trio of new forwards costing over £190m in total. Arsenal have also moved to try and improve their title chances with a new £64m striker, £60m midfielder and £48.5m winger. Even though they have struggled to get the signings they have been chasing this summer, Newcastle have also completed one of the biggest deals in bringing in Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55m. The transfer window is still open for another two weeks, so there may well be some big deals still to be done. But will we see the record for summer spending broken? The most ever spent by Premier League clubs came in the summer of 2023 when spending hit £2.36bn. That was a significant step up from the previous highest in 2022 of £1.92bn. Last year, 2024, saw £1.98bn spent by Premier League clubs. You might think strikers would have been the reason behind the record summer spending, but that was not really the case. Declan Rice went from West Ham to Arsenal for £105m, while Moises Caicedo left Brighton for Chelsea for £100m in the two biggest buys of the summer. Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig to Manchester City was the next most expensive move, with the defender costing £77m. In terms of forwards, Rasmus Hojlund was the priciest that summer as Manchester United spent £72m on the Dane. Spending this summer is getting close to the record and has already reached £2.23bn. If Premier League clubs fork out another £130m before the close of the transfer window then the record will be broken. If Liverpool can persuade Newcastle to sell Alexander Isak to them then that deal alone is likely to do the job. Liverpool have been the biggest spenders so far this summer already, with the two biggest deals being Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £100m and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m.
