Stampede at Haridwar temple failure of system: AAP
NEW DELHI: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday termed the stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple a failure of the system rather than just an accident, and demanded that accountability be fixed. The stampede that broke out at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple on Sunday killed at least six people and left many injured, police said. Rumour of an electric current where the stairs to the temple begin sent the devotees into a panic, leading to the stampede, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Dobal told PTI Videos. In a post in Hindi on X, Kejriwal said, "The heart-wrenching incident of a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in the holy city of Haridwar has deeply saddened me. May god give strength to those devotees who have lost their loved ones and grant peace to the departed souls." He added that such "horrific" incidents at religious sites expose the negligence in management. "This is not just an accident, but a failure of the system, and accountability should be fixed," the AAP national convenor said in his post. ‘Insensitivity towards poor': Rahul targets BJP over demolitions in city
New Delhi: Congress functionary Rahul Gandhi on Sunday alleged that hundreds of slum dwellers in Delhi were going through the pain of being rendered homeless with their houses being destroyed by BJP govt, claiming that this "atrocity" exposed the party's "insensitivity" towards the poor and its "arrogance of power". The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha shared a video of his recent visit to Ashok Vihar, where many houses were demolished. "Imagine, how you would feel if the roof over the head of your parents, children or siblings is suddenly taken away — if your entire family is rendered homeless in a single moment? Hundreds of poor families living in the jhuggis are going through this pain today," Gandhi said in his post in Hindi, along with the video, on X. The small houses in which they had settled their entire life were "ruthlessly destroyed" by BJP govt, he alleged. Kamra questions privilege notice: ‘Can't be used as shield against embarrassment'
Mumbai: Asserting that his remarks on deputy CM Eknath Shinde didn't interfere with the functioning of the state legislature, standup comic Kunal Kamra has said the notice on the breach of privilege motion moved against him appears to be mala fide and motivated. A breach of privilege motion is not meant to shield legislature members from the embarrassment or discomfort caused by a citizen's legitimate exercise of his freedom of speech, regardless of what position they occupy in the executive, he said in his reply to the notice. He said Shinde can't be equated to or conflated with the entire Vidhan Sabha. Legislature officials said state law department authorities are in agreement and have cited various Supreme Court orders to say that a breach of privilege motion can sustain only if a person's act restricts a legislator from discharging his/her legislative duties. Officials said they had recommended against admitting the motion, but legislative council chairperson Ram Shinde eventually decided to do so and send it to the privileges committee to initiate proceedings.
