Lakhs lost to fake repair bills, no work done in these 2 Madhya Pradesh schools

India Today06-07-2025
Two government schools in Madhya Pradesh's Shahdol district - Sakandi and Nipania - have come under scrutiny after social media exposed suspicious billing records showing inflated labour costs and maintenance claims, despite minimal or no actual work being carried out.In the case of Sakandi government high school, official records show a payment of Rs 1.06 lakh was made for painting and repairs. However, the bill oddly claimed the engagement of 168 laborers and 65 masons for just 4 litres of oil paint. This raised serious questions about the authenticity of the completed work.advertisementSimilarly, in the government higher secondary school in Nipania, Rs 2.31 lakh was withdrawn for using 275 laborers and 150 masons to paint with just 20 litres of oil paint and install 10 windows and four doors.
The revelations triggered a wave of public outrage after the bills surfaced online. Authorities, meanwhile, have now promised an inquiry. Shahdol District Education Officer Phool Singh Marpachi acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and assured that the matter would be probed.Beohari SDM Narendra Singh Dhurve confirmed to Aaj Tak that he had visited the schools for a spot inspection after learning of the alleged fraud. He admitted that not only was the quality of work substandard, but much of it remained incomplete. He added that all related documents had been summoned for verification and that strict action would follow against those found guilty.A peculiar anomaly was also flagged in the billing records: the principal of the Nipania school had reportedly verified the bill on April 4, 2025, while the construction agency, Sudhakar Constructions from Odari, generated the same bill a month later, on May 5. The timing discrepancy has further deepened suspicions of deliberate fraud and document manipulation. Despite these glaring errors, the treasury office approved the payment. The incident casts a harsh light on the deteriorating condition of rural schools in Madhya Pradesh. While central and state governments allocate funds regularly for infrastructure maintenance, poor quality construction followed by systematic misuse of maintenance grants through inflated and possibly forged bills continue to plague the education sector.- EndsMust Watch

UP: Daily wages of farm workers hiked to Rs 252, lakhs of rural workers to benefit

Lucknow: In a landmark decision that will empower and uplift agricultural workers in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath on Thursday announced a revision in the minimum wage rates. The hike in wages is set to bring a smile to the faces of lakhs of rural families as the labourers engaged in various types of agricultural activities across the state will now receive a minimum daily wage of Rs 252, or Rs 6,552 per month. The revised wage structure is set to benefit lakhs of workers involved not only in traditional farming but also in allied sectors like animal husbandry, beekeeping, and poultry farming. The increase in daily/monthly remuneration will go a great deal in bridging the gaps between rising expenses and stagnant income. It will bring greater financial security to the farmers and will enable them to have a dignified standard of living. Sharing the information about the wage hike, the Labour and Employment Department Principal Secretary M.K. Shanmuga Sundaram said that the revised minimum wage will apply to all types of farming activities across Uttar Pradesh. This includes traditional farming, mushroom cultivation, and labour involved in transporting crops to markets. It also covers allied sectors like dairy farming, animal husbandry, beekeeping, poultry farming, and all related support work. The wages can be paid in cash, partly in cash, in kind (such as farm produce), or through digital modes. In no case, the wages go less than the latest prescribed rates. Notably, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly emphasised protecting workers' rights as a top priority for his government. Earlier, the state had registered crores of unorganised workers through the e-Shram portal and connected them to government welfare schemes. By encouraging fair wages and digital payments, the government has further underlined its commitment to prioritising farmers' welfare.

Cyber fraud busted: Two arrested for duping Delhi man of Rs 10.64 lakh via malicious app

New Delhi: In a breakthrough against rising cyber frauds, the Cyber Police Station of South-West Delhi has arrested two cyber criminals from Jharkhand for cheating a Delhi resident of Rs 10.64 lakh through a malicious mobile application (APK file). The accused, identified as Shankar Dan (27) and Pradeep Kumar Dan (26), both residents of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, were arrested following extensive raids conducted across Jharkhand and West Bengal. According to police, the duo used to impersonate bank representatives and lure victims by sending fake APK files via WhatsApp, which gave them unauthorised access to bank accounts. In this case, the victim received a call on June 30 from someone claiming to be an SBI official, citing issues with cheque clearance. The caller sent a malicious file under the pretext of verifying cheque images. After installing the app, the victim's phone was compromised, and unauthorised transactions worth Rs 10.64 lakh were made from his Bandhan Bank account. The money was routed through the BillDesk payment platform to Axis Bank credit cards and Google Ads, and later withdrawn using third-party apps like CRED and MobiKwik. Police recovered six smartphones, including the device used to make the call and one used to operate the BillDesk app. The devices contained credit card data, banking credentials, and malware. Shankar Dan, who has studied till class 3 and owns a mobile shop, was previously involved in two cyber fraud cases and one murder case. He was responsible for calling victims and sending the malicious links. Pradeep, educated till class 8 and an accused in a murder case, managed the financial transactions. The investigation is ongoing, and police suspect the involvement of a larger cyber syndicate operating from forested areas to evade detection.
