Commentary: Why Chinese F&B companies are expanding in Indonesia

SINGAPORE: In the past decade, China's food and beverage (F&B) firms have started large-scale investments outside China, driven by domestic market saturation and the Xi Jinping government's 'going out' policy.
Southeast Asia has become a prime target for this expansion due to its rapidly growing consumer base, underdeveloped F&B industry, proximity to China, and generally open investment environments. Given the variety of F&B industry offerings, mainland Chinese multinational enterprises (MNEs) are targeting market niches like ice cream and milk tea.
Prominent mainland Chinese F&B firms founded in cities like Xiamen and Shenzhen are now expanding in the region, such as Mixue Ice Cream and Tea (Mixue Bingcheng), Naixue (formerly Nayuki, also known as Naicow), Joyday (Yili Product), Chagee and Luckin Coffee.
However, they face competitors including earlier entrants from the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, which benefit from strong brand recognition and deep-rooted consumer trust.
A DIFFERENT MODE OF ENTRY
The mainland Chinese companies' mode of entry is quite different from American business franchise models, such as Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, which are typically owned by large local conglomerates.
Franchisees in local markets bid for franchise outlets from the master franchise holder: for instance, the franchisee is PT Mitra Adiperkasa (MAP) for Starbucks Indonesia. This model is more exclusive and arguably caters to middle and upper-income segments in urban markets.
Meanwhile, mainland Chinese F&B firms offer a low-cost franchise model, extending their reach to non-urban areas. This model disrupts the traditional model, which requires high initial capital and can be highly exclusive.
With an initial capital of less than US$40,000, a Mixue franchise business is accessible to many aspiring entrepreneurs in the region.
Among the incoming mainland Chinese F&B brands, Mixue is arguably the fastest-growing in terms of the number of outlets in Southeast Asia. Founded by Chinese businessman Zhang Hongchao in the late 1990s, Mixue first entered Southeast Asia via Vietnam in 2018 and Indonesia in 2020.
Expansion into other Southeast Asian markets has been more modest, but sharp growth has occurred in economies with relatively lower income per capita and a significant young population (Vietnam and Indonesia).
Its growth in Indonesia has been striking – in the first two years, Mixue opened 317 stores; within four years, this exceeded 2,000. In Vietnam, Mixue opened approximately 1,000 stores in five years.
SIGNIFICANT BARRIERS
Initially, mainland Chinese F&B firms sought to enter developed countries' markets but encountered significant barriers. Regulatory complexity, stringent food safety standards, higher entry costs, and the presence of well-established local and multinational brands hindered the Chinese firms' penetration into developed markets, like Australia, South Korea and Japan.
In Japan and South Korea, there is also strong "local brand nationalism" or loyalty, making it harder for foreign brands to penetrate their domestic market.
In contrast, certain markets in Southeast Asia offer more receptive business environments. Their ice cream and F&B sectors have considerable room for growth.
Mixue's rapid expansion in Indonesia can be attributed to three key factors: its efficient supply chain, affordable product pricing, and the ease of launching a franchise. Mixue's model enables rapid expansion by relying on a network of low-cost, standardised outlets that are attractive to local entrepreneurs.
As Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population, halal certification is a prerequisite for most F&B businesses operating there. In January 2023, Mixue faced protests from Islamic groups in Jakarta, who questioned the halal status of its products and asked for a boycott.
In response, Mixue's management immediately clarified that their ingredients did not contain lard or alcohol and emphasised that the company had applied for halal certification in 2022.
The Majelis Ulama Indonesia (the Indonesian Ulema Council, MUI), the authority in charge, did not initially respond. This prompted public criticism of bureaucratic delays, which can discourage foreign investment. Shortly after, MUI granted Mixue a halal certificate.
MANY OTHER PLAYERS
Before Mixue's rapid expansion, a few other players had made inroads into Indonesia. Aice Group, established in Singapore in 2014 by new Chinese migrant Wang Jiacheng, founder and CEO, entered Indonesia in 2015.
Aice gained popularity by selling low-cost ice cream products tailored to Indonesian tastes. By 2022, Aice had become one of the largest F&B firms in Indonesia, operating with three large-scale factories in Cikarang, West Java; Mojokerto, East Java and North Sumatra.
Meanwhile, Yili Group, a major Chinese player, entered the market through its Joyday Ice Cream brand, thus directly competing with Aice and Mixue.
The regulatory climate in Indonesia has largely supported F&B investment, particularly for firms able to adapt to local requirements, such as halal compliance and pricing sensitivities.
SHAPING PERCEPTIONS OF CHINA
While competition is fierce, some of the Chinese firms have localised their supply chains and adapted branding and distribution models to align with Indonesian consumer preferences.
As Chinese F&B brands gain popularity, they might be shaping perceptions of China. In July 2023, a piece in The Jakarta Post commended Mixue's contribution to Indonesia's economy, noting its job creation, affordability, and resilience during economic downturns.
The article argued that while 'negative perceptions of China may not be entirely eliminated by popular cheap food', brands like Mixue demonstrate that local communities can view positively aspects of China's presence.
This reflects the broader soft power potential of Chinese consumer brands, particularly in a culturally sensitive sector like F&B.
The sustainability of the Chinese low-cost franchise model remains to be seen. It is effective for quick market penetration, as evidenced by the rapid growth of retail outlets.
However, there is no openly available evidence that such growth is associated with profitability. The Chinese F&B business model will face serious tests related to quality control and market saturation as competition heightens.

Singaporeans are replacing their phones every 2.7 years, contributing to some 2.9 million mobile phones being stowed away, a new study shows. But one Singapore start-up is hoping to change this and keep phones in circulation for five years here. This will be even longer than the global smartphone replacement cycle of 3.5 years on average. Cinch plans to meet this target by renting out instead of selling the devices to consumers, ensuring that the returned units at the end of the rental period are refurbished to get a new lease of life with another user. "We're trying to extend the useful life of these devices beyond the average refresh rate," said Mr Mahir Hamid, chief executive and co-founder of Cinch, which commissioned the study to better understand consumer behaviour. Its study, conducted between late 2024 and early 2025, involved interviews with firms that handle e-waste and used devices, as well as a survey of 500 Singapore-based respondents. Fresh from raising US$28.8 million (S$37 million) in funding led by Monk's Hill Ventures, Cinch is now actively pursuing consumers, letting them pay a monthly fee to rent the latest premium models of phones, laptops and other devices. Cinch will also foot 90 per cent of the repair cost of devices damaged due to accidents. For instance, the latest Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge with 512GB storage is available from Cinch for a rental fee of $70 a month over two years. At the end of two years, consumers would have paid $1,680. The same model can be bought from Samsung for $1,808. An Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max with 512GB storage can be rented from Cinch for $120 a month over 12 months. This will amount to a total of $1,440 at the end of the year. The same model costs $2,199 upfront from the Apple store. Customers can also buy direct from Samsung and Apple with an interest-free instalment plan, but it would require them to have a credit card from specific banks such as DBS, OCBC or UOB. "There is a massive segment of the population for which a $2,000 to $3,000 purchase can be a significant proportion of their monthly salary," said Mr Hamid. "A subscription model allows them to access the premium device." Cinch, which has been operating here since 2023, has been leasing mostly to businesses such as those in the retail, logistics, information technology and public relations sectors. Around 10,000 devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets have been leased, most of which were returned and refurbished for a second or third customer. "Every refurbished unit needs to be as good as new," said Mr Hamid. "If it doesn't meet our standards, it doesn't go back into circulation." He said that all returned devices undergo a professional diagnostic sweep and complete data wipe so users do not have to worry about privacy leaks. Customers can buy their rented devices from Cinch if they wish, but it would likely cost more than buying from retailers such as Shopee or Lazada, said Mr Hamid, urging users to rent instead. Cinch has also partnered with waste management firm Alba Group since the start of 2025 to collect and recycle devices that can no longer be refurbished for new leases. During recycling, valuable materials such as precious metals and plastics are extracted from the e-waste. Singapore generates more than 60,000 tonnes of e-waste a year, according to a report by the National Environment Agency in 2018. This is equivalent to 73 mobile phones disposed of per person in Singapore. Slowing down the device replacement cycle will reduce the overall volume of electronic waste that needs to be collected, sorted and processed, an Alba spokesperson told The Straits Times. "Alba supports efforts like Cinch's to keep electronic devices in circulation for a longer period, as it aligns with our mission to reduce e-waste and promote a circular economy in Singapore," said the spokesperson. PHOTO: CINCH The leasing of laptops, smartphones and tablets has become a standard practice among some businesses, as it allows them to access the latest technology without incurring huge upfront costs. Leasing is also a way of reducing depreciating assets. Leasing firms typically cover a device's configuration, maintenance, repair and eco-friendly disposal. Telcos Singtel and StarHub have been leasing devices to businesses since 2020 and 2021 respectively, while M1 does so only as part of a more comprehensive suite of tech services. Singtel started leasing devices to consumers in 2018, but ceased the programme in 2022. Mr Keith Leong, Singtel's managing director of enterprise, said consumers find that they get better value from buying devices bundled with mobile plans. But businesses in sectors such as government, infocomm and aviation continue to lease from Singtel. While the device leasing meets the specific needs of some businesses, many consumers still choose to buy devices as it gives them full ownership and control, which can be cost-effective over the long run, said Mr Leong. "Ultimately, both models provide valuable pathways to equip a mobile workforce effectively," he said. Other rental firms such as Circular and have also been in the market since 2021 to wean consumers from device ownership. Apart from renting out phones, laptop, and gaming consoles, also rents out home appliances such as digital door locks and washing machines. Leasing an iPhone 16 Pro Max with 512GB storage space would cost between $69 and $82 a month for two years from Circular, depending on the phone's condition. The same model would cost between $92 and $99 a month for two years from Cinch's adviser Arvin Singh said that Netflix and Grab have proven that ownership of storage discs and cars, respectively, is not essential. "Netflix for many years now has disrupted ownership of DVDs and hardware... So I think it's not a strange concept for consumers. When it comes to phones, maybe a bit more education is required," said Mr Singh. However, Ms Tracy Tsai, vice-president analyst of consulting firm Gartner, said that phones cannot be compared to DVDs, cars or bicycles as phones carry confidential personal data. The cost-effectiveness of renting also comes into question if users upgrade frequently, she added. "But if users want to chase the latest phone every year, renting might be less of an issue."

The low-cost carriers that have taken to Singapore skies

[SINGAPORE] News of the impending shutdown of Jetstar Asia, with the loss of more than 500 jobs, has sent shockwaves through the aviation sector. Comments on social media site Reddit lamented the budget carrier's closure as it was the only airline that plied between Singapore and the holiday destinations of Okinawa in Japan, Wuxi in China, Labuan Bajo in Indonesia and Broome in Australia. On Wednesday (Jun 11) the Qantas unit announced its closure and said that its last day of operations would be Jul 31. Budget flights have become a staple of the travel industry, accounting for one-third of the 49.8 million passengers who passed through Changi Airport in the first nine months of 2024. As the low-cost carrier scene continues to battle stiff competition, rising fuel costs, price wars and the entry of new players, The Business Times takes a look back at the Singapore budget carrier landscape. Early 2000s: Budget airlines take off Budget airlines made their appearance in the Singapore aviation sector in the early 2000s, bringing cheap fares and new destinations to an emerging class of cost-conscious travellers. Sign Up Sign Up With their trademark low fees and no-frills offerings, they revolutionised travel and made flying – once considered a luxury – much more affordable and accessible. South-east Asia underwent a budget travel boom after Malaysia's Tony Fernandes pioneered the low-cost carrier model in the region with AirAsia in 2002. Singapore's first low-cost carrier Valuair took flight in May 2004, ferrying 162 passengers on its maiden trip from Changi Airport to Bangkok. The privately owned startup was co-founded by former SIA deputy chairman Lim Chin Beng, alongside other investors. With fares at a fraction of those offered by full-service airlines – up to 40 to 50 per cent lower – it became a competitor to SIA's now-defunct subsidiary SilkAir, which plied regional routes. That same year, SIA Group launched Tiger Airways with state investor Temasek, while the founders of Irish budget carrier Ryanair and Australia's flag carrier Qantas established Jetstar Asia. The year 2005 proved to be a rocky one for low-cost carriers as fuel costs rose and full-service carriers slashed prices to never-seen-before levels to compete with and undercut their budget rivals. Governments in the region, such as Indonesia, also shut their doors to foreign budget carriers. This left Singapore-based airlines with only a few crowded regional routes to compete in. That year, Jetstar Asia and Valuair merged under the holding company Orangestar, with both retaining their original names. Amid challenging conditions, the two carriers struggled to make money. Still, there was no stopping travellers' wanderlust. In 2007, Jetstar Asia and Tiger Airways featured on a list of Changi Airport's top 10 carriers by passenger numbers. In January 2010, Tiger Airways listed on the mainboard of the Singapore Exchange (SGX). Entrances and exits: Players scoot in and out Over the years, Singapore's budget carrier market expanded by 21 per cent from 2004 to 2024, outpacing that of full-service airlines, which grew 1.4 per cent, according to Alton Aviation Consultancy. The number of budget flights from Changi Airport also soared with the expansion of low-cost airlines. From just 1,705 flights in 2004, the number of budget flights from the airport climbed to 16,798 in 2009 and hit a peak in 2018 with 64,618 flights to more than 100 cities. But as air fares and earnings fell, carriers scaled back on operations, causing a string of consolidations and exits. Indonesian budget airline Tigerair Mandala ceased operations in 2014, when its shareholders pulled the plug on funding. Tiger Airways owned a 35.8 per cent stake in the loss-making carrier, which had contributed to it racking up hefty losses for the financial year ended March 2014. During this time, SIA launched a new and second low-cost carrier, Scoot, in 2012, in response to growing competition with brands such as Jetstar and AirAsia. It made its inaugural voyage to Sydney in June that year. Scoot was meant to capture the medium- and long-haul market, while Tiger Airways would focus on short-haul flights. Tiger Airways, which had been renamed Tigerair, struggled with consecutive full-year operating losses for FY2014 and FY2015. The airline began to scale back its regional ambitions amid fierce competition, exiting the markets of Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan. Eventually, SIA took it private in 2016. Tigerair was then folded into Scoot in 2017 as SIA consolidated its two budget carriers under the holding company Budget Aviation Holdings, to operate them under the Scoot brand, which fared better in market perception on issues such as comfort, safety and service quality. The merger also aimed to boost cooperation between the two carriers and cut costs. Meanwhile, Jetstar Asia enjoyed growth in the early part of the 2010s, as higher passenger numbers and an expanded regional network brought its earnings to S$18 million for the financial year ended June 2011. However, its growth slowed near the end of the decade. As at 2018, its share of Singapore's low-cost carrier market shrank to less than 20 per cent from over a quarter in 2010, a Centre for Aviation report showed. By then, its rival carrier Scoot had grown rapidly. Pandemic turbulence and recovery Covid-19 dealt the aviation sector a heavy blow with the curbs on travel. The inevitable result was that Changi Airport's budget flight numbers dived and remained below 50,000 for 2020, 2021 and 2022. In 2020, Jetstar Asia grounded its entire fleet, retired five aircraft and trimmed 26 per cent of its headcount or 180 staff. Scoot suspended most of its flights and pivoted to chartering cargo as its parent company SIA Group cut some 4,300 positions across its airlines By 2024, as the pandemic eased and travel recovered – with Changi Airport's budget airline passenger traffic reaching 101.6 per cent of 2019 levels between January and September of 2024 – low-cost carrier operators were poised to resume growth. Scoot added new destinations to its network, ramped up flights and expanded its fleet. In comparison, Jetstar's recovery was slower. Analysts observed that its 2024 capacity and traffic was only around half of pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, despite a surge in 'revenge travel', low-cost carriers continued facing headwinds. These included stiff regional competition, volatile fuel prices and geopolitical tensions. Challenges such as supply chain snags also delayed new plane deliveries and grounded existing ones, while sustainable aviation fuel mandates pushed costs up. Airlines cited rising costs – including the fees charged by Changi Airport – as a challenge to operating in Singapore. The Republic in November 2024 had announced airport fee hikes to fund upgrades to Changi Airport. The move was lamented by Jetstar Asia's chief executive John Simeone, who said it could affect the airline's ability to sell tickets under S$100 – which comprised around two-thirds of the carrier's flights as at December 2024. Jetstar Asia grounded When Jetstar Asia announced its exit – citing cost pressures as threatening its ability to offer the low fares that are key to its business – passengers and staff were shocked, but industry experts said the move was unsurprising, albeit unfortunate. They pointed to how the Singapore-based carrier had struggled to turn a profit even before the pandemic, and was in the black for only six years in more than two decades of operations. Jetstar Asia lacked the scale, local dominance and margin buffers of its stronger rivals, analysts said. Moreover, its 2023 shift to Terminal 4 from Terminal 1, where its parent Qantas operates, severed the seamless connectivity between the two airlines and lengthened connecting times, which likely worsened its problems, analysts added. However Qantas itself has displayed a respectable performance. Qantas Airways in February announced an underlying profit before tax of A$1.39 billion (S$1.17 billion) for its first half ended December. It also declared its first special dividend in more than two decades and its first final dividend since September 2019. What does Jetstar's departure mean? Jetstar's exit leaves Scoot the sole Singapore-based budget carrier and closes a chapter on the once high-flying budget carrier scene. As Changi Airport Group works with other carriers to plug connectivity gaps in the dust of Jetstar Asia's departure, one thing is for certain: There will always be a demand for budget travel – but whether it is a profitable business remains to be seen.

[SINGAPORE] Over the five trading sessions from Jun 6 to 12, institutions were net sellers of Singapore stocks with net institutional outflow of S$80 million, following the S$32 million net outflow from the preceding five sessions. This took the net institutional outflow for 2025 to Jun 12 to S$1.84 billion. Institutional flows Over the five trading sessions, the stocks with the highest net institutional outflow were DBS , OCBC , UOB , Singapore Technologies Engineering , Singapore Exchange , Keppel DC Reit , Singapore Airlines , Frasers Centrepoint Trust , Mapletree Industrial Trust and Haw Par Corp . The following companies led the net institutional inflow over those five sessions: Singtel , Keppel , City Developments , Hongkong Land Holdings , CapitaLand Investment , Venture Corp , Sembcorp Industries , Jardine Matheson Holdings , SIA Engineering Co and CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust . From a sector perspective, financial services and real estate investment trusts (Reits) experienced the highest net institutional outflow; telecommunications and real estate (ex-Reits) saw the most net institutional inflow. Share buybacks In the five sessions, 17 primary-listed companies undertook buybacks for a total consideration of S$70.7 million. DBS, UOB and OCBC led the consideration tally, collectively buying back S$66.8 million of shares. On its current buyback mandates, UOB had bought back 0.31 per cent of its outstanding shares as at Jun 12; DBS had done so for 0.21 per cent, and OCBC, 0.03 per cent (as at Jun 12). Sign Up Sign Up During the week, DBS became the first Singapore-listed stock with a market capitalisation surpassing US$100 billion. First chalked up and quoted on the Stock Exchange of Malaysia and Singapore on Nov 29, 1968, the stock has continued to attract the interest of retail investors, who, amid the volatility in the first half of April, net bought S$810 million of its shares. Secondary-listed Hongkong Land also conducted share repurchases in four of the five sessions, Director transactions In the five trading sessions between Jun 6 and 12, more than 80 director interests and substantial shareholdings were filed for close to 30 primary-listed stocks. Directors or chief executive officers filed 13 acquisitions and no disposals, and substantial shareholders filed 12 acquisitions and one disposal. This included director or chief executive officer acquisitions in Anchun International Holdings , Asian Pay Television Trust (APTT), CapAllianz Holdings , Chemical Industries (Far East) , CosmoSteel Holdings , Ho Bee Land , KOP , Mewah International and Q & M Dental Group (Singapore) . Q & M Dental Group (Singapore) Between Jun 10 and 11, Q & M non-independent executive director and group chief executive officer Ng Chin Siau increased his total interest from 54.25 to 54.92 per cent. The 6,427,900 shares were acquired by Quan Min Holdings at an average price of S$0.395 apiece. At the end of April, Dr Ng's total interest had stood at 53.02 per cent. The recent spate of acquisitions coincided with the group commencing a share buyback programme on May 8, under which 1,651,200 shares, or 0.17 per cent of the outstanding shares were repurchased. These were the first share buybacks undertaken since November 2021. At the company's FY2024 annual general meeting, Dr Ng announced that Q & M was committed to share buybacks of up to 50 million shares. He stressed the importance of performance share plans in the dental services provider's drive to retain employees. CosmoSteel Holdings Between Jun 6 and 11, CosmoSteel executive director and CEO Jack Ong acquired a million shares at an average price of S$0.220 apiece, increasing his direct interest from 17 to 17.39 per cent. On May 15, Evolve Capital Advisory, on behalf of 3HA Capital, announced a voluntary conditional cash offer for all issued and paid-up ordinary shares of CosmoSteel at S$0.20 apiece. The offer is conditional on the offeror having received more than 50 per cent of the total number of issued shares (excluding shares held in treasury) as at the close of the offer under the minimum acceptance condition. Nine Yards Chambers subsequently sent a letter to 3HA Capital on behalf of the Ong family, raising concerns about the voluntary cash offer for CosmoSteel and requesting clarifications that could influence shareholder decisions, given the Ong family's stake and potential impact on the offer's outcome. Jack Ong, his brother Andy and their father Ong Chin Sum collectively owned 24.45 per cent of the company as at Dec 11, 2024. Filings show that Jack Ong has since increased his interest by 2.89 per cent. Asian Pay Television Trust On Jun 10, Lu Fang-Ming, non-executive director and vice-chair of the trustee-manager of APTT, acquired 400,000 units of the business trust for a consideration of S$33,600 at S$0.084 per unit. The move increased his total interest in APTT from 1.23 per cent to 1.25 per cent. This followed his acquisitions of 263,600 shares at S$0.081 apiece in May and 319,400 units at S$0.077 apiece in April. Lu served as corporate executive vice-president at Hon Hai Technology Group/Foxconn, following the acquisition of the intelligent hub and switch product ODM (original design manufacturer) company he co-founded in 2000. He was also chairman of Asia Pacific Telecom group, Taiwan's fourth-largest mobile carrier, from 2014 to 2021. On May 14, APTT reported revenue of S$59.4 million for Q1 FY2025. Foreign-exchange effects led to a negative variance of 3.8 per cent compared to Q1 FY2024, due to a weaker Taiwan dollar. On a constant Taiwan dollar basis, revenue declined by 2.7 per cent. APTT highlighted that broadband continued its growth momentum, adding approximately 8,000 new subscribers. With slightly higher average revenue per user, broadband revenue rose by 7.8 per cent in Taiwan dollars and 4 per cent in Singapore dollars, despite adverse exchange rate movements. Revenue from data backhaul also accounted for around 4 per cent of total broadband revenue. The CEO of the manager, Somnath Adak, noted that APTT is progressing towards its goal of growing broadband cash flows to consistently exceed the decline in basic cable TV. Adak added its strategy remains focused on aggressive subscriber acquisition, and leveraging industry networks to unlock long-term broadband growth opportunities. Anchun International Holdings On Jun 9, Ace Sense acquired 77,200 shares of Anchun at an average price of S$0.377 apiece. This increased the deemed interest of Xie Ming, Anchun's non-independent non-executive chairman, from 23.41 to 23.57 per cent. This follows the acquisition of 124,200 shares of Anchun at S$0.318 apiece on Mar 3. Anchun delivers integrated chemical and environmental engineering solutions, offering energy-efficient, eco-friendly technologies to support China's petrochemical and chemical industries. In FY2024, the group's revenue grew by 32.7 per cent from the year before, to 177.4 million yuan (S$31.7 million), driven by a 45 per cent surge in demand for its chemical systems and components (CSC). Demand was slower in other segments. Anchun said its CSC segment is benefiting from China's push for large-scale, modern chemical projects, and rising demand for integrated green hydrogen, ammonia and methanol solutions. Anchun has enhanced its target and budget management, introduced a three- to five-year development road map, and adopted a phased dual-growth strategy for revenue and profit to drive return on equity. Strategic focus areas include large-scale domestic chemical projects, integrated green hydrogen, ammonia and methanol solutions and global partnerships, supporting growth across the CSC, engineering services and catalyst segments. At the same time, its key challenges of domestic pricing pressure, aggressive competitor tactics and slower industry growth remain. To further prepare for new opportunities, the group is actively developing internal talent across geographies. TOTM Technologies On Jun 9, Thomas Clive Khoo increased his substantial shareholding in TOTM Technologies above the 10 per cent threshold, from 9.99 to 10.05 per cent. The 814,300 shares were acquired at S$0.011 apiece. This followed his substantial shareholding crossing above 9 per cent on May 30, and above 8 per cent on Feb 21. He emerged as a substantial shareholder in September 2024. In April, TOTM Technologies and Teneo Communications signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a joint venture that would accelerate Malaysia's digital transformation using advanced artificial intelligence and digital identity technologies.
