How Jets' Steve Wilks is challenging Sauce Gardner to reach next level

New York Posta day ago

New Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks gave cornerback Sauce Gardner a challenge when the two met after Wilks was hired.
'He's been a Pro Bowl player,' Wilks said. 'How consistent can he be to take it to another level? That's one of the things that I challenged him on Day 1 when we had our conversation. I felt like, and you guys feel the same way, that he's one of the top corners in the league, but that consistency of being that dominant player each and every week, that's what we're looking for and that's been his challenge this offseason.
'He's very gifted, and I told him sometimes your greatest strength is your greatest weakness. He's a guy that sometimes that 85 percent is still better than everybody around him, so his thing is, and I told him, compete against yourself. That's where he has to get better, which he will.'
Gardner was first-team All-Pro in his first two seasons but did not have as strong of a season last year. He is eligible for a contract extension, and the Jets face a major decision on how much to invest in the star corner. One knock on Gardner in his career has been his lack of interceptions.

He has three in three years, including one last year. Wilks said Gardner is working on it.
'That's finishing as we talked about, and he's been working on that for us,' Wilks said. 'Taking more time with the Jugs [machine] and getting extra catches in and understanding how to catch the ball away from your body just like a receiver would do. But I always say this, and I know there's a lot of talk about him, but he's only going to be as good as the guys around him, so it's all about trying to make sure that we all, particularly on the back end, pushing in the same direction.'
Second-year WR Malachi Corley missed practice again Wednesday with an undisclosed injury.

Corley has missed a lot of time this spring, and it could cost him in a tight competition at wide receiver.
Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand said Corley will have to catch up in training camp.
'That's a great question really for him to ask, 'How do I get myself mentally caught back up, because I wasn't able to get the physical reps this spring?' ' Engstrand said. 'And ultimately, that's going to be what it is, because the other guys do, they have a handful of practices ahead of him and those physical reps. So, he's going to have to find a way to catch himself up with that stuff.'
Rookie WR Arian Smith also did not practice Wednesday.
LB Quincy Williams was on the field in uniform but did not participate in team drills.
QB Justin Fields said he plans on getting together with the wide receivers and tight ends during the break before training camp.

Las Vegas Raiders: 3 players who could turn into training camp holdouts, including Jakobi Meyers

Like most NFL teams, the Las Vegas Raiders opened mandatory minicamp this week. While some clubs practiced without key players seeking new deals, the Raiders didn't have that issue. Still, they should work on extensions with a few veterans to avoid holdouts at training camp. Late in May, Las Vegas made AJ Cole the league's highest-paid punter, signing him to a four-year, $15.8 million extension including $11 million in guarantees. As an All-Pro-Pro Bowler in three of the last four seasons, he earned that extension. Advertisement Other extension candidates haven't achieved leaguewide accolades in recent seasons, but they deserve a pay raise based on their position market. Here's a breakdown of three Raiders who could hold out for a new deal if the front office doesn't extend their contract before training camp. Offensive tackle Kolton Miller Credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Kolton Miller skipped an early portion of the Raiders' offseason program. Yet he's participated in practices through OTAs and attended mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. He told reporters that he wants to stay with the team long term. Last offseason, Miller underwent shoulder surgery and needed time to work his way into form. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed five sacks in the first two weeks of the regular season but only gave up two more for the remainder of the campaign. Even without any All-Pro or Pro Bowl accolades, Miller is a quality left tackle, and the Raiders should reward him with a new deal. Advertisement Currently the 13th highest-paid left tackle set to make $18 million this year, he could command over $22 million annually with at least $50 million in guarantees. Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers Credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images After Davante Adams took an escape route out of Las Vegas, Jakobi Meyers took over the lead wideout role to complement rookie tight end Brock Bowers, who led the team in most receiving categories last season. He caught 87 passes for 1,027 yards and four touchdowns. Still the lead playmaker in a relatively young receiver room, Meyers is an underpaid lead wideout. Set to make $11 million this year, he's 29th among wide receivers in annual salary. During OTAs, Meyers chose to keep contract talks between himself and the organization. Advertisement 'Yeah, I want to be here, for sure,' he said to reporters. 'But that's all I could really say on it right now. That's business between us and the top floor. So, I'm just going to hold that one down for now.' Meyers' contract situation should be a priority in Las Vegas. He has no guaranteed money in the final year of his deal. He could command $15-20 million annually following his most productive campaign. Kicker Daniel Carlson Daniel Carlson may celebrate a new deal with fellow special-teams player AJ Cole if the Raiders want to pay their kicker before he enters free agency in 2026. In a contract year, Carlson can force the conversation with a holdout to speed up the process. Advertisement Carlson's conversion rate on field goals has declined since he made 94.3 percent of his attempts in 2020. Despite that, Las Vegas Review-Journal's Vincent Bonsignore believes Carlson could be in line for an extension. In 2024, Carlson converted on 85 percent of his field goals, though four of his six misses were from 50-plus yards. Based on that context, the Raiders may believe that his conversion rate will trend in the right direction with an offense that can move the ball more efficiently than their recent units. 5 best Jaire Alexander landing spots after release from Green Bay Packers

After failing to reach a contract resolution that would have reduced his salary to less than the $16.15 million he's set to make in 2025, the Green Bay Packers are set to release Jaire Alexander. The Packers tried to trade him first, but teams weren't willing to pay Alexander's current rate either. So, now that he's on the open market, the other 31 teams can freely negotiate with the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback at a fair market rate. But which teams are still in need of another starting cornerback? Here's a quick list of five potential landing spots for Alexander. Carolina Panthers Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images The Carolina Panthers are fresh off having the worst defense in NFL history. They've taken steps to improve upon last season, but finding Jaycee Horn a proper running mate would be ideal. Alexander may have just played a total of 14 games in the past two seasons, but if he's healthy, the Panthers could luck into a Pro Bowler. Jaire Alexander could come in and immediately be the best of the bunch, as long as he stays healthy. Alexander has recorded an interception in seven of eight seasons as a pro, which should give the Raiders a reason to take a chance on him. Alexander is a perfect 1-for-1 replacement, considering his tendency to create turnovers. Plus, the Dolphins have former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry on staff. The Rams are clearly interested in adding another high-end cornerback, and Alexander can be signed immediately. Related: Want more Rams coverage? Visit Minnesota Vikings Credit: Wm. Glasheen-Imagn Images If Alexander wants to stick it to his former team, what better destination than landing with the Minnesota Vikings? Alexander would slot in opposite of Byron Murphy, giving the Vikings two Pro Bowl cornerbacks to lead their secondary. Advertisement Related: Want more Vikings coverage? Visit Related Headlines

Green Bay Packers president takes shot at Jaire Alexander after releasing him

After months of Jaire Alexander rumors, the Green Bay Packers have finally moved on from their two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, cutting him after seven seasons. Alexander was once viewed as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, but there was a reason the Packers moved on from him. After playing in a total of just 14 games across the past two seasons, Alexander's name became far bigger than his game. Alexander's health has become a far bigger issue, so the Packers weren't willing to pay the $16.15 million salary Alexander was set to receive in 2025. Advertisement Now that the Packers are no longer tied to Alexander, their team president, Mark Murphy, is taking shots at the player he once helped draft in Green Bay. Murphy was asked about his confidence in the remainder of the Packers' cornerback group before saying, 'we've been used' to playing without Alexander as of late. Yet, Murphy also had some positive things to say about the former second-team All-Pro selection. 'He has been a great player for us. Obviously, elite talent. Unfortunately, just injured a lot. Unfortunately that's a big part of the game.' Green Bay Packers team president Mark Murphy on Jaire Alexander Of course, Murphy already has one foot out of Green Bay, being that he's set to be replaced by new team president Ed Policy in the coming months. So he may not really care about hurting the feelings of a player he won't ever have to deal with again.
