Agra: A gang of 10 women who allegedly stole valuables from devotees at temples in Mathura was arrested after a judge's mangalsutra was snatched at the Thakur Shri Radharaman temple in Vrindavan on June 1, police said on Sunday.
The 2-tola gold mangalsutra was recovered during the arrests across temple precincts.
Justice Prema Sahu, an additional district and sessions judge from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, lodged a police complaint on June 5 saying her mangalsutra had been snatched while visiting Vrindavan with her family. A case was filed under BNS section 303(2) (petty theft).
Mathura police launched a campaign and arrested the women on Saturday.
SSP Shlok Kumar said, "We launched a campaign to identify and apprehend women thieves and pickpockets active in the temples, leading to the arrest of 10 women. We recovered the stolen mangalsutra and several purses containing cash, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, debit cards, driving licences and other important documents, along with Rs 18,000 in cash.
"
During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted they were from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and operated in crowded temples in Vrindavan and Mathura, targeting phones, purses and jewellery. All legal formalities were completed and the 10 women were sent to jail. They have also been charged under BNS section 317(5) (possessing or facilitating concealment of the stolen items).

Confusion over Shakti scheme creates a rift between female passengers and bus staff
Belagavi: A woman started shouting at the conductor in a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus, travelling from Belagavi to Ratnagiri recently, after he asked her to pay for her ticket. She refused to pay, claiming that she was entitled to free travel under the state govt's Shakti yojane. The incident took place after the bus moved around 10 km from the Belagavi Central Bus Stand. The woman, who intended to travel to Nippani—a town near the Karnataka-Maharashtra border—presented her Aadhaar card to claim the scheme's benefit. However, the conductor informed her that the Shakti scheme does not apply to interstate routes extending more than 20 km into neighbouring states. Upset over this, the woman questioned him why this wasn't communicated to her before boarding the bus. This isn't an isolated incident. Thousands of women commuting in border areas face similar confusion. A majority of people aren't aware that some of the interstate buses are ineligible for the govt scheme. Moreover, there is no signage indicating that the Shakti scheme doesn't apply to the bus. The absence of a clear identification system for eligible buses and the lack of prior intimation have led to recurring disputes and inconveniences, especially in regions like Belagavi, where interstate travel is frequent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo This has been creating a lot of confusion and outrage among passengers, as conductors ask them to pay for tickets halfway through the journey. Unaware of the issue, many women who board the bus with less money or no money face big trouble. Introduced in 2023, the Shakti scheme allows women to travel free of cost in non-premium govt buses within the state. However, the scheme explicitly excludes interstate services covering distances beyond 20 km outside Karnataka. Speaking to the TOI, KSRTC Belagavi divisional controller Rajesh Huddar confirmed the policy constraints. "Shakti scheme does not apply to long-route interstate buses, including those headed to Pune, Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Nasik etc. We have around 25 such buses travelling to neighbouring Maharashtra and Telangana. Unfortunately, there is no established mechanism to alert passengers in advance," he said. Admitting the growing seriousness of the issue, Huddar said KSRTC is considering measures to avoid such confusion in the future. Meanwhile, women passengers from border districts continue to demand a transparent and passenger-friendly mechanism to identify scheme-eligible buses. "The matter is being taken seriously. We're exploring options to improve visibility and clarity around eligible routes," the officer said.

SUV rams police van on Delhi-Mumbai eway, home guard falls 10ft from flyover
Faridabad: An SUV driven by a teenager trainee pilot crashed into a police interceptor van parked along Delhi-Mumbai expressway, sending a home guard plummeting from a flyover to a road 10ft below near Badauli village on Sunday morning. The accident occurred at 7.45am when a black Mahindra Scorpio, driven by 19-year-old Kritika, struck the stationary police van in which two cops — both named Deepak — were monitoring speeds of other vehicles. The impact sent the police interceptor (HR51GV-8574) crashing into the flyover's boundary wall, causing home guard Deepak to fall onto the road below. While one constable was inside the van, the home guard was standing outside to monitor traffic speeds. Deepak, the home guard, suffered grievous head injuries and is undergoing treatment in the ICU of Sarvodaya hospital. The traffic constable was discharged after treatment. Both cops are around 25 years old. Kritika, who was travelling with three friends from Sector 12, was headed for the district court area to have noodles. "The Scorpio would have been cruising at 150kmph easily. The woman, who was behind the wheel, seemed to have panicked a little after seeing the police van and failed to slam the brakes in time. So, the black SUV crashed into the van at high speed," said Munim Chand, who was passing by. "We usually have cops here monitoring vehicle speeds. Such accidents are rare," Munim added. Tyre marks at the scene indicated a failed attempt at emergency braking. The Scorpio was severely damaged on the left side, but the occupants escaped with minor injuries because of airbags. The crash drew crowds and prompted immediate responses from emergency teams, BPTP police station personnel, and traffic cops. Authorities used a crane to clear both the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow. The driver was taken into custody and released on bail later. "We've registered a case against the driver, who is pursuing pilot training after completing Class 12," said Arvind, the SHO of BPTP police station. An FIR was registered against her at BPTP police station under BNS sections for rash driving, endangering life, causing grievous hurt, and obstructing public servants from performing their duties.

In May 2025, Karnataka cricket association's ignored civic officials' warning on illegal advertisements
Bengaluru: In a development that raises serious questions about Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) compliance and accountability, it has now emerged that BBMP had issued it a formal notice as early as May 13, 2025, warning against the unauthorised installation of LED advertisement boards inside M Chinnaswamy Stadium — nearly three weeks before the tragic RCB victory celebration stampede that killed 11 and injured scores more. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The civic body's notice cited Section 158 of BBMP Act, 2020, and the BBMP Outdoor Signage and Public Messaging Bylaws, 2018, both of which mandate prior written permission from the chief commissioner before displaying any advertisement in the city. The act clearly prohibits commercial advertisements without approval, and such violations are punishable with up to one year imprisonment and fines of up to Rs 2 lakh. "Installation of LED displays without permission is considered unauthorised and a violation of the law. If not removed within seven days, BBMP will take action, and KSCA will be liable to pay removal charges and penalties. A criminal case may also be initiated," said Munish Moudgil, special commissioner (revenue), BBMP. Despite the clear warning, KSCA took no action to remove the illegal LED displays, which were used again during the high-profile RCB event on June 2. The LED boards allegedly contributed to crowd congestion and blocked visibility near key exits, aggravating panic during the stampede, another official said. According to the senior civic official, KSCA was explicitly directed to remove the displays within seven days of receiving the May 13 notice, failing which the civic body would undertake their removal and recover costs along with penalties. The notice also warned of criminal prosecution under Sections 326 and 329 of the BBMP Act. "This was a preventable tragedy," said the BBMP official. "If KSCA had complied with the notice, crowd movement might have been smoother, and we might not be mourning the loss of 11 lives today."
