Telangana on High Alert as IMD Predicts Heavy Rains; ₹1 Crore Relief Released for Each District

Gadwal: With the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rains across Telangana for the next 2–3 days, the state government has instructed district administrations to be on high alert. Revenue, Disaster Management, Housing, and Information & Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, along with Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, on Thursday held a video conference from the State Secretariat with district collectors and superintendents of police to review the ground situation. The Minister announced that ₹1 crore has been released to each district for immediate relief operations, adding that more funds will be provided if required. Senior officials have been appointed as special officers to oversee relief efforts in the erstwhile 10 districts. Collectors have been told to cancel all leaves of government staff and ensure their immediate return to duty. Strict vigilance has been ordered in low-lying and flood-prone areas, with deployment of police at low-level bridges and causeways to prevent accidents. The Minister also directed officials to take preventive steps to control the spread of waterborne diseases, ensure uninterrupted power supply, and maintain drinking water services. He emphasised that in certain areas even 200 mm of rain can cause dangerous backwater flooding, leading to possible evacuations. As a long-term measure, he suggested relocating affected residents and providing them housing under the Indiramma Housing Scheme. District Collector B.M. Santosh, District SP Srinivasa Rao, Additional Collectors Lakshminarayana and Nursing Rao, and officials from various departments took part in the review meeting

Yamuna water level may go close to danger level over weekend

New Delhi: The hourly discharge from Hathnikund Barrage reached a seasonal peak of over 65,000 cusecs on Thursday, driven by heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of the Yamuna. Experts said that due to the high discharge, the water level in the river in Delhi is likely to rise close to the danger level during the weekend. It usually takes around 48 hours for water to travel from Hathnikund Barrage to Delhi's Old Railway Bridge. Following incessant rainfall in the hill catchment, the season's highest peak discharge of about 65,861 cusecs was recorded at 3pm. It surpassed the previous peak discharge of around 61,729 cusecs recorded on Aug 6. It had caused the water level at Old Railway Bridge to touch the season's high of 205.15 metres for two hours on Aug 8. The danger level for the city is 205.33m. Central Water Commission's data shows that the Yamuna water level at Old Railway Bridge remained above the warning level of 204.5m from 3pm on Wednesday to 6am on Thursday. It dipped slightly to 204.29m at 4pm. The level is likely to rise during the weekend. As seen last week, discharges of similar volume helped the river breach the warning level for the first time in the season and fell short by 0.18m to breach the danger level. Chances are good that the river this time may reach further close to the danger level in Delhi within the next 45 hours. " Rawat said increased water flow would keep the river in a free-flowing condition throughout the Delhi stretch. "This will also help the Yamuna dilute contamination, flush out effluents and remain stink-free in the national capital in the coming days." According to the irrigation and flood control department, the highest flood level recorded was 208.66 metres in 2023 when Delhi experienced Yamuna floods. In 2023, the highest discharge from the barrage was more than 350,000 cusecs, with many hourly discharges of over 1,00,000. The water level of 207.49m was seen in the floods of 1978. In 2010, it stood at 207.11m and 207.32m in 2013. The river has not witnessed any flood spell in 2024. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
