Midfielder wants U's to use lowly bookies backing as fuel next season
WILL Vaulks wants Oxford United to use their lowly backing by bookmakers and pundits as fuel going into next season.
The U's upset the apple cart last season, finishing 17th upon their return to the second tier for the first time in 25 years.
United were regarded as firm favourites for relegation, and that hasn't changed going into the 2025/26 campaign.

Vaulks said: 'People have us on to get relegated. I would use it as a fuel. Let's show people that we won't be down there, but at the end of the day, I understand it.
'We were in a really bad spell with points at one point of the season, and then we picked up. It is what it is. That stuff doesn't really matter.
'It matters what happens in the building and how the players feel. I know this club is very ambitious and wants to be higher up the league.
'I've been at clubs in the past, and no disrespect to them, they didn't have that ambition and didn't want to rise up the way that this club does.
'They want to do it properly and I'm really excited for next year. It's really important that the manager's got this chance now to have the time with the players in pre-season. It'll definitely be a hard pre-season, that's for sure.
'We don't want to be in the position that we were last year. We want to be pushing up the table and getting to points where you can look above you instead of looking below.'

If the U's are to push higher up the league next season, then smart recruitment in the summer transfer window will likely be a key ingredient.
Vaulks said: 'Most managers probably want quality over quantity, I would say. We've got quite a lot of bodies, and I don't know the ins and outs of the recruitment, but we've got quite a lot of bodies and it'll just be about the manager trying to add the quality.
'Players coming to us now, it felt a risk coming, I admit that from a stable Championship club to here, but now players will look at it and go 'you know what, Oxford are serious'.'

Florian Wirtz set for Liverpool medical later this week
Florian Wirtz will undergo a medical on Friday ahead of completing his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool. The plan, as things stand, is for Wirtz to arrive in the United Kingdom later this week ahead of the medical but both elements are subject to change. The Athletic reported on June 13 that Liverpool had agreed a fee of €136.3million (£116m), with €117.5m (£100m) due upfront and a further €18.8m in potential add-ons, to sign Wirtz. Advertisement The fee represents a club-record purchase for Liverpool and sale for Leverkusen, and would be a British transfer record if the add-ons are achieved. Leverkusen had reportedly set an asking price of €150m for the 22-year-old, which the Premier League champions did not intend to meet. Wirtz's Leverkusen contract runs until June 2027. The playmaker had also been targeted by Bayern Munich this summer but the Bavarians were informed last month that he favoured a move to Liverpool if he were to leave Leverkusen. Wirtz registered 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 matches in 2024-25 as Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the Champions League round of 16. In the previous campaign, Wirtz was key as Leverkusen won their first-ever German top-flight title with an unbeaten domestic season, alongside reaching the Europa League final. The Germany international scored 18 goals and assisted 20 in 49 matches, winning the Bundesliga player of the season award. Liverpool and Leverkusen have been in dialogue for a number of weeks after the Merseyside club met the €35million (£29.6m; $39.3m) release clause for Jeremie Frimpong. The full-back's arrival at Liverpool was announced on May 30, following the sale of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid ahead of the Club World Cup. Wirtz and Frimpong have joined head coach Xabi Alonso in departing Leverkusen this summer, with the Spaniard taking over from Carlo Ancelotti at Madrid. Leverkusen have appointed former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag as their new head coach. ()

Desperate Italy bucking the trend of picking more established coaches with hiring of Gattuso
ROME — It used to be that the coach of Italy's soccer team was someone who had a long list of managerial achievements and was nearer to the end of a career than the start. Not so with Gennaro Gattuso . But these are desperate times for Italy, the four-time champion that is facing a real possibility of failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.

Arsenal unconcerned by Real Madrid links to defender
Arsenal are unconcerned over speculation linking Myles Lewis-Skelly with an exit and are optimistic about agreeing a new deal with the defender. Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a breakout campaign for Arsenal in 2024/25, with the teenager making 39 appearances in all competitions after debuting for the senior side in September. Advertisement The 18-year-old was a key part of Arsenal's run to the Champions League semi-finals and thrived in the quarter-final win over holders Real Madrid. Following those displays, the Spanish side have been linked with an ambitious move to sign Lewis-Skelly, whose contract has just 12 months to run. Real Madrid have targeted high-profile free agents in recent windows with Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold among the names to have moved to the Bernabeu. Los Blancos are again scouting the market for potential Bosman deals, amid links to Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate and Lewis-Skelly. However, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Arsenal remain relaxed about the latter's situation. The North Londoners are keen to reward Lewis-Skelly with a new long-term deal, recognising his development at the Emirates. Advertisement He has emerged as Mikel Arteta's first choice at left-back and marked his senior England debut with a goal in March. Lewis-Skelly became the youngest debutant to score for England, beating the previous record held by Marcus Rashford. Arsenal are keen to tie up the defender to a new deal, after sealing an agreement for Gabriel Maghalaes earlier this month. The Brazilian defender ended speculation surrounding his future at the Emirates after signing a new contract. Gabriel is now contracted to the Gunners until 2029.
