Tarentum leaders want to improve safety at spray park after multiple vehicle crashes

CBS News17-07-2025
Tarentum's spray park is a popular spot for families to visit and cool off, but local leaders said it has been the scene of multiple crashes, which is why they're taking action to improve safety.
On a hot summer day, you may find Lisa Sobek and her daughter at the spray park at Riverview Memorial Park.
"My daughter absolutely loves it," Sobek said. "It's super fun and exciting for the children."
Throughout the summer, the place can be packed with kids running through the water. But it's next to a busy corridor for trucks and tractor-trailers on First Avenue.
Families, along with borough leaders like Mayor Bob Lang, have been concerned about the traffic, and the three or four crashes that have happened there in recent years, the worst this past spring, forcing the borough to delay opening the spray park for a week.
"Mostly not paying attention, and we had a few DUIs," Lang said.
Lang said these incidents caused severe damage to the fence surrounding the park, and they had to replace it each time, which is expensive. Thankfully, no one was in the park when the crashes occurred, but they fear the possibility.
"I've got grandkids, I don't want anybody's kid to get hit by a car," Lang said.
To try to prevent that, the borough plans to install more bollard posts from the spray park to the end of the playground by Allegheny Street.
"They're going to be three feet apart, and they're going to be behind the fence," Lang said.
The borough also plans on making updates to the security cameras. It is currently working with a contractor, and construction should start soon.
"It would be unthinkably tragic if something happened to the children," Sobek said.
After seeing the hole in the fence this spring, Sobek is relieved to learn about these upgrades.
"Children are so valuable, they're so worth that kind of investment to be protected," Sobek said.
The project is expected to be done by the end of the year.

She said: "He was a larger-than-life character, and as soon as he heard I was also from Riccall, that was it." In a Facebook post by his relative, they said that Mr Duggan had campaigned to improve safety at the junction where the crash happened. Campaigning was a huge part of his role as a councillor. Cllr Duckett described him as a "crusading councillor" who campaigned ferociously for the people of Riccall. "He just loved Riccall," she added. "He was absolutely fantastic at working hard for his residents. "He was a big union man, and he worked hard to improve working conditions for everybody. He got on with absolutely everybody." Cllr Duckett also said John was a big family man, adding: "He absolutely adored Katie, his wife, and his daughters. They were always out walking together, keeping fit together. He was a crusading local councillor. He was a union man, but also a quiet family man, and he was devoted to his girls." Death of 9-year-old girl at Hersheypark ruled accidental, no criminal activity found

The death of a 9-year-old girl who drowned at Hersheypark has been ruled accidental, with no criminal activity found on the part of the park's employees, according to police. Sophia Subedi drowned on July 24 in the wave pool at the Pennsylvania theme park, the Derry Township Police Department said. A review by police concluded that the park upheld safety standards and that the number of people in the wave pool at the time was "significantly less than it's designed maximum capacity," according to a Derry Township Police statement released on Friday. "Our hearts break for this child and the child's family. We extend our deepest condolences for their loss," John Lawn, Hersheypark's CEO, in a statement on July 24, adding that park-goers' "safety and well-being drive every decision we make."
