The leaders, who held a meeting at the Maratha Mandir in Belagavi on Tuesday, reached a unanimous decision in this regard.
Dilip Kamath, an environmentalist, said that the Gadgil Report and Kasturirangan Report were submitted to the central govt in the past. The Gadgil Report, which meticulously analysed the extinction and survival of the Western Ghats, warned that no activities that could harm the environment should be carried out in the vicinity of the Western Ghats region.
The report also highlighted the biodiversity of the Western Ghats region and the immense benefits it brings to the country, providing a detailed report on the protection of the Western Ghats.
Everyone needs to join hands for the survival of the Western Ghats by abandoning the Kalasa Banduri project.
Sujit Mulgund, a social activist, said that water is already being supplied to Hubballi-Dharwad through Malaprabha reservoir.
Farmers in Bagalkot and Ramdurg taluks are using water from the Malaprabha reservoir to grow two crops, while farmers in Navalgund, Nargund, and Dharwad are using this water for more than two crops. The amount of water used from the Malaprabha reservoir has increased, with claims that this project is for drinking water.
Representatives and officials of the area informed that the areas of Hubballi, Dharwad, Navalgund, and Nargund will not face any shortage of drinking water till 2041.

They expressed concern that work is now underway to transport more water to the twin cities through a pipeline, which could lead to a shortage of drinking water in the Belagavi area. The Mahadayi diversion project will be abandoned as it will harm the Western Ghats.
Captain Nitin Dhond, an environmentalist, stated that the Mahadayi River travels approximately 1,500 kilometres from its source to the sea. The Malaprabha River plays a significant role in environmental protection by providing habitat for numerous plants and trees.
It is a good move to supply drinking water to Hubballi and Dharwad from the Malaprabha reservoir. Belgaum may face drinking water problems in the future as more water is lifted from the Malaprabha River to supply water to industrial areas of Hubballi, Dharwad, and sugar factories of politicians.
Therefore, it is not appropriate to implement any projects here which will harm the Malaprabha River and the Western Ghats.
Advocate Nitin Bolbandi, farmer leader Chunappa Poojeri, Sidagouda Modagi, Mallesh Chougale, environmentalists, farmer leaders, and Dalit leaders were present.

BJP and JD-(U) slam Lalu Prasad for allegedly insulting Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal-(United) leaders on Saturday slammed the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad for allegedly insulting Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar by placing a portrait of the Dalit icon at his feet. The BJP media cell circulated the video of Mr. Prasad, in which the ailing leader can be seen seated on a couch with his feet placed on a sofa nearby. A supporter enters the room carrying the portrait and places it close to Mr. Prasad's feet before greeting him on his 78th birthday on June 11, 2025. 'It is very unfortunate that such a shameful act took place in democracy. The act proves that he considers himself a king and does not have any respect for anyone,' said BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary while addressing the presspersons at his official residence in Patna. While showing the video on a tab, Mr. Choudhary further said, 'Not giving respect to anyone and insulting everyone is in the DNA of Lalu Prasad. If there is anyone who has always insulted backward, extremely backward and Adivasi communities, it is the former Chief Minister Of Bihar, Lalu Prasad. His act also proves that he hates dalits.' He pointed out that Mr. Prasad does not evenrespect the party workers and leaders. BJP leader and another Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha lashed out at Mr. Prasad terming him a social criminal. Bihar JD-(U) State president Umesh Singh Kushwaha also issued a statement saying that the insult of Dr. Ambedkar's picture by Mr. Prasad is a direct attack on the self-respect of the Bahujan Samaj and exposes the real mentality of RJD and the truth of its pseudo social justice. 'Lalu Prasad has once again proved that he is a symbol of political feudalism. For him, socialism is just an election slogan, which he has been using just to confuse the common people and enjoy the pleasures of power. It is meaningless to expect respect for Baba Saheb's ideas from a party where democracy and ideology are a mere show,' Mr. Kushwaha said. The JD-(U) State president asserted that people of Bihar will neither accept the arrogance of the Lalu family, nor will they ever forgive the insult of a great man like Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. He alleged that hundreds of Dalits became victims of caste massacre during Lalu-Rabri rule. 'Dalit, backward and deprived society were most affected by the anarchy during the 15 years of Jungle Raj. These incidents were carried out by power-protected criminals under the nose of the Lalu family, which clearly shows that their mentality has been to suppress the deprived society from the very beginning,' Mr. Kushwaha said.

In the video, Lalu is seen seated on a couch with his feet placed on a sofa nearby as a supporter enters the room carrying the portrait of Ambedkar, and places it close to former's feet before greeting him. Bihar deputy chief minister and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary also shared a video clip of the incident that happened when the former CM was celebrating his 78th birthday earlier this week. NDA netas accuse Lalu of insulting Ambedkar

Patna: NDA leaders in Bihar on Saturday demanded a public apology from RJD chief Lalu Prasad after a video went viral showing a party supporter placing a photo of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar near Lalu's feet on the latter's birthday on June 11. In the video, Lalu does not touch the portrait and his security personnel move it aside. He also does not comment during the incident. Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, deputy CM Samrat Choudhary and JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha accused Lalu of disrespecting Dalits and EBCs and demanded a formal apology for "insulting" Ambedkar. However, the RJD defended its leader. Party spokesperson Sarika Paswan said, "Lalu is the only one who truly respects Baba Saheb. BJP will not understand this. The sentiments of that party worker are not being understood." Still, BJP leaders insisted the video showed Ambedkar's picture placed on the ground near Lalu's feet. Deputy CM Choudhary said, "The picture proved that Lalu hates the Dalit community and never respected Baba Saheb's thoughts. Insulting Dalits and backward classes is part of Lalu's work culture. Insulting Ambedkar on his birthday is a dark chapter in politics. Watching the video, it becomes clear that Lalu has no respect for Baba Saheb. Insulting people of lower castes has been his habit. The public has recognised his dictatorial style. " Manjhi added, "Lalu sitting with his feet towards Baba Saheb is a big insult. The public should understand this." JD(U)'s Kushwaha said, "Those doing politics in the name of Ambedkar are insulting him. This is their socialist thinking. Everyone worships him, and he is showing his feet." Former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "The person who gave it may be a courtier, but what was Lalu doing? He should have understood that Ambedkar is the Messiah of the country."
