Shopping and dining in Tokyo can sometimes be daunting without a strong grasp of Japanese, especially when it comes to communicating with store staff. But help may be on the way: At Harajuku's newest landmark, Tokyu Plaza Harajuku 'Harakado', a new pilot project titled 'Subtitles for the World' is happening now. The initiative, realised in partnership with Japanese automotive tech company Aisin, is a 'social experiment' exploring the use of cutting-edge real-time captioning technology and is aimed at bringing about a more inclusive society.
Running until May 18, the trial features Aisin's YYSystem transcription app and translucent LCD display tech, which help break down communication barriers for customers with hearing impairments and international visitors alike. The transparent displays, equipped with a microphone and keyboard, visualise speech in real-time on a holographic screen. Impressively, the futuristic devices can also translate speech into over 30 languages. This system, along with tablet versions, has been implemented across 21 establishments in Harakado, including cafés, izakaya, beauty salons and retail shops.
To take part in the pilot project, be sure to visit the third-floor 'subtitled information counter' located next to Baby the Coffee Brew Club. There you'll receive a neck strap indicating your specific needs, with tags such as 'I have difficulty hearing' or 'I need English subtitles'. After trying out the transcription services at various stores, don't forget to return to the counter to share your feedback. Participants who complete the post-trial survey will receive a ¥500 gift card to use within the shopping complex.

Toyota's Big Electric Leap: 7 New EVs Are Coming to the United States

Toyota has been picking up the pace to challenge competitors in the US EV segment, and those efforts could make it a top manufacturer over the next few years. Toyota is finally waking up Toyota's been rather sluggish on the transition to EVs, instead taking a slow approach by shifting most of its lineup from combustion engines to hybrid powertrains. Don't count Toyota out of the game just yet, though – consider the manufacturer a sleeping giant who is finally waking up. After a weak entrance into the electrified segment with the bZ4X, soon to be renamed the bZ, the Japanese automaker is ramping up production with plans to sell seven EVs in the United States by mid-2027. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:10 2025 Ford Maverick: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice Watch More 2026 Toyota bZ — Source: Toyota At least two EVs will be made in the United States Toyota currently has two all-electric models between its main and premium Lexus brands. The Toyota bZ4X, renamed to bZ for the 2026 model year, receives several major updates that make it more attractive, including a 314-mile range. The 2026 Lexus RZ follows suit, with improved performance and up to 300 miles of range on a single charge. Toyota also announced that the C-HR will arrive sometime in 2026, presumably for the 2027 model year, and offer a 290-mile range. 2026 Toyota C-HR — Source: Toyota Production of two new EVs will begin at its American manufacturing facilities in 2026, while three others will be imported. According to executives, the Japanese automaker expects slow but steady growth in the EV segment. If there's a surplus for American-made EVs, Toyota will export that surplus to overseas markets with faster EV adoption rates. 'We'll sell a little bit more every year and grow with the market,' Cooper Ericksen, a senior vice president of planning and strategy at Toyota Motor North America, told Bloomberg. 'But we have to think about how many Canada will use, how many the US will use, and we can then export to other global destinations.' 2026 Toyota RAV4 — Source: Toyota Toyota previously pledged to offer an electrified version of every nameplate on its global lineup. To date, approximately 80% of Toyota and Lexus models are available with hybrid or all-electric powertrains. Most recently, Toyota announced that the 2026 RAV4 will come with hybrid-only powertrains. Toyota's U.S. battery production prepares to come online Toyota plans to manufacture at least two new EVs in the United States, but their production efforts don't end there. The Japanese automaker has plans to begin producing and shipping lithium-ion batteries from its US facility later this year. The battery plant spans more than 1,850 acres in Liberty, North Carolina. Once fully operational, the facility will have 14 lines producing batteries. Of those, four will manufacture hybrid batteries, while the other 10 will supply batteries for the two American-made EVs. 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland — Source: Toyota The first hybrid battery line is expected to start production in June, with the rest beginning operations through 2034. Once all 14 lines are running, the production facility will produce up to 30 gigawatt hours, the equivalent of 800,000 hybrid, 150,000 plug-in hybrid, and 300,000 EV batteries. Toyota sold less than 30,000 EVs in 2024, during which US EV sales rose 7.3% to 1.3 million. That isn't surprising, considering the automaker has been fairly outspoken regarding government policy towards EV adoption. Instead of using incentives to speed up EV sales, such as the $7,500 tax credit, Toyota executives indicated that governmental bodies should allow the EV segment to grow organically. 2026 Toyota C-HR — Source: Toyota 'The whole EV ecosystem is ahead of the consumer,' said Jack Hollis, COO of Toyota North America, in November 2024 regarding emissions regulations. 'It's not in alignment with consumers. It's just not.' Even so, the Japanese automaker expects EV market share to double over the next five years. According to Cox Automotive, EV sales made up 8.1% of total vehicle sales in 2024. Currently, competitors like Tesla and Hyundai are dominating US EV sales. While all-electric vehicles might not be a major seller for Toyota now, executives aren't willing to cede the segment to competing manufacturers. Source: Lexus Final thoughts Tariffs aside, it looks like Toyota has a solid plan to become a true competitor in the EV segment. Considering the original bZ4X crossover was met with mixed reactions thanks to its slow charging speed, lackluster performance, and disappointing range, Toyota's upcoming EVs are a breath of fresh air. The updated bZ and RZ seem promising enough, and the upcoming C-HR looks like a stylish addition to the all-electric lineup. If the pricing is right, Toyota could very well overtake General Motors and Hyundai within a few years. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese manufacturer manages to topple Tesla, too.

Premier League fail in bid to close Chelsea loophole after controversial sales

Chelsea have raised eyebrows with their ability to avoid the pressures of Profit and Sustainability rules, with the Premier League clamping down on the accounting tricks the Blues have used The Premier League have failed in their bid to close a loophole that allowed Chelsea to ease their Profit and Sustainability concerns. English top-flight chiefs have clamped down on financial matters at their clubs in recent years. That has led to points deductions for Everton and Nottingham Forest, while Manchester City are awaiting the verdict of an independent panel's investigation into the 130 charges levelled against them. ‌ Several other teams have felt the pressure of PSR, with Newcastle and Aston Villa restricted in the transfer market, while Manchester United have raised ticket prices in a bid to ease compliance concerns. ‌ Amid that context, Chelsea have raised eyebrows with their heavy spending in the transfer market. The Blues have spent more than £1.1billion in the past three years, consistently ending up as the Premier League's highest spenders. Despite that, they have been able to surprisingly avoid getting into trouble with PSR. Club chiefs have utilised a major loophole to do that, drawing an attempt to close it from Premier League chiefs. The loophole means that clubs can sell assets such as hotels to related companies and include the revenue in their profitability and sustainability calculations in the next season's accounts. Chelsea utilied exactly that when they sold two hotels to a company linked to their owners in 2023 and included the revenue generated in their PSR submission. The Blues also sold their women's team to a related company at a value of almost £200million last year. That helped the London side record a net profit of £129.6m for the year ended June 30, 2024. League rules do state that such associated party transactions must be done at fair market value. ‌ The Premier League had been keen to close up that loophole, consulting with clubs on a proposal to hold a vote on a rule change in advance of the league's annual general meeting on Wednesday, which sought to have the sale of such fixed assets excluded from clubs' PSR calculations. But the proposal did not gain sufficient support to put it to a vote, meaning the loophole will stay in place for now. Chelsea's hotel sales were cleared by the league, albeit with the value reduced to a restated £70.5m in their latest accounts, down from an original £76.5m. The valuation put on the women's team is still being assessed. Top-flight clubs opted against changing the rules around the sale of fixed assets in 2021. At the same time, the EFL brought in tougher rules for its clubs after some included revenue from the sale of assets such as stadiums in their financial sustainability calculations. The sale of fixed assets cannot be included in revenue under UEFA's financial sustainability rules.

Inside story of the ex-Man Utd wonderkid who retired in non-league that now helps clubs find the next gen of talent

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FEBIAN BRANDY has gone from being one of the hottest young talents in English football to helping clubs unearth the next big thing. Brandy, 36, didn't quite hit the heights after nearly 15 years on the books at Manchester United. But injuries meant that Brandy never played a professional game for Man Utd. He instead had 16 different clubs across multiple countries before retiring in non-league. However, he has insisted that he has no regrets over how things worked out, after it was that journey that led him to create Skouted - an app that helps unsigned players find a club to give them an opportunity. Brandy told SunSport: "I always saw myself playing for Manchester United, I didn't really know anything else. "I only really knew Man Utd and England. So when it did come to an end it was hard, I was upset. 'But I thought to myself, for my career, this has to happen. I didn't want to be one of those players that was 23/24 and signing contracts just to be at a big club. "I wanted to go and make a name for myself elsewhere. I was obviously upset, but it was something that had to be done. People ask, 'Should I have signed for Barcelona?' Don't get me wrong, the weather would have been nicer, but I've got no regrets. Barcelona had come sniffing after he had impressed in a youth tournament involving the Catalan club, Real Madrid, PSG and Ajax. Brandy explained: "About two weeks after the tournament, some Spanish guy - I don't know how he got the number - rang my mum and dad's house phone. "My mum picked up and he said 'we're interested in your son Febian.' 'Another two weeks later I went into training and Sir Alex Ferguson walked past me in the corridor and said 'have you heard?'. "I had a feeling what he was talking about, but you have to be respectful so I played dumb. He said 'Barcelona are interested in you, what are your thoughts?' 'I said, 'listen, boss. I'm a local lad. I'm from Manchester and I see my career here, this is the place that I want to be'. Then he just slapped me on the head, called me a good lad and walked away. 'Things started to come to fruition in the weeks that followed, and I think they [Barca] made a £1m bid, which obviously Sir Alex rejected and I didn't hear anything of it from then." Manchester-born Brandy ultimately left United in 2010, where he had come up through the youth ranks alongside the likes of Ravel Morrison, Jonny Evans and Danny Welbeck. Just 22 at the time, Brandy had gone from training with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville - players he recalls being like "big brothers" to him - to trying to find his next club and the next step in his career in the lower leagues. Brandy had lined up a deal with Sheffield United in the Championship, but broke his metatarsal in the last minute of his last game for Man Utd's reserves - scuppering the move. 10 Brandy spent nearly 15 years on the books at Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd Credit: Febian Brandy Instead, after seven months without a club, he found an opportunity with Notts County in League Two. From there injuries meant Brandy was never able to settle at one club, kickstarting a journeyman career that saw him play in Greece and Thailand as well as for the likes of Sheffield United, Rotherham and Rochdale. It was during that time of bouncing around from club to club and constantly battling injury that Brandy realised he had to start thinking about his future, which led to the idea for Skouted. He recalled: "When I was in my late 20s I had been battling with so many injuries and I started to think about my future. "I didn't really want to be a coach or a manager. That's when I started to put Skouted in place. 'I've always had an entrepreneurial mindset and I think what really triggered it was that when I was at Man Utd, I was pretty fortunate to be there as long as I was. "I was fortunate to get a contract every year from the age of eight until I was 22. 'I had friends that might not have been good enough to make it at Man Utd, but they might have been able to go and play at a lesser club. "But when they got released their parents or their guardians didn't have the connections to pick up the phone to someone in the Championship or League One and ask for a trial. 10 Brandy moved to Sheffield United later in his career Credit: Blades 10 He also had a spell with Walsall Credit: PA:Empics Sport 'That's when I thought to myself, 'I need to create something that's going to bridge that gap between players and clubs'. "Something where football clubs can find these players and players have got a platform to present themselves in front of these football clubs.' That's exactly what he did, launching Skouted after hanging up his boots at non-league Ebbsfleet in 2017 and turning his attention to helping the next generation of talent. The app allows young players to upload clips of themselves playing, with top clubs then browsing through the videos to see if there's any potential there. While Brandy has also begun to organise showcase games where young stars train together and are invited to play in academy competitions in front of top-level scouts - including the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea. Everyone wants to sign a Messi or a Ronaldo, but the reality is that they're rare gems. But my experience at Man Utd helps me know what level top clubs are still looking for. Febian Brandy In fact, a recent entry into the SuperCup, formerly known as the Milk Cup, saw his side of hungry prospects grind out a 2-2 draw with Manchester United U16s with just four weeks of training - resulting in eight players being invited to trials at top clubs. It was that same competition that Brandy had played in as a teenager, winning player of the tournament over the likes of Sergio Busquets and Bojan - sparking interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona. Brandy doesn't know exactly how many players he has helped get an opportunity, but estimated that Skouted has helped in excess of 300 club-less players earn professional trials across the globe. He wants Skouted to be seen as a "breeding ground" for talent, and can already point to players that are now tied down at the top level thanks to the app's help. Arsenal youngster Louis Zecevic-John, who has signed a scholarship with the Gunners academy and represented both England and Serbia at youth level, found himself on the Skouted app before getting his shot. 10 Arsenal youngster Louis Zecevic-John is an example of Skouted's success Credit: Getty Brandy explained: "Louis was picked up by one of the Skouted scouts and we put him up with a Championship club, who ended up not being too keen on him. "But after that he was picked up by a Premier League side before signing a two-year contract with Arsenal. 'He was actually on the Skouted app a few years ago, it just goes to show that we know what we're talking about. "He went from Regents Park, to the Skouted App and now he's gone on to sign for Arsenal'. Now Brandy is planning on expanding his platform for the women's game too, with plans in place to put on a female showcase game this year. For the former England youth international and two-time Saint Kitts and Nevis cap, it's all about getting talented players back on the pitch. He added: "Everyone wants to sign a Messi or a Ronaldo, but the reality is that they're rare gems. But my experience at Man Utd helps me know what level top clubs are still looking for. 'Some of these players don't know what to do, and their parents don't know what to do. In terms of how they can get involved in the football system. "We're not saying we're going to turn everyone into a Premier League footballer, but what we're trying to say is there's a level out there for people to play football.' 10 Brandy knows better than most that not everyone will make it to the Premier League Credit: Getty
