Drought leaves Yorkshire farmers worried for the future

Standing in one of her hay fields on the outskirts of York and looking at the struggling plants around her, farmer Angela Serino says it is a "sorry sight". The drought in Yorkshire has brought further misery to farmers who say they were banking on a high yield this year, after the past two years were a washout. Instead, crops have struggled to grow due to being scorched in the hot and dry conditions. The region has seen the driest start to a year in 96 years.For Angela, who runs Beetle Bank Farm, growing her own hay keeps her many animals fed during the winter, but this year she will need to source and purchase the crop elsewhere.
"It should probably be four times taller than this, we're getting ready to cut it now," she sighs. "It's very brown, it should be a lot greener."Angela only takes one harvest a year, either at the end of July or in early August, to allow grey partridges, hares and pheasants to grow up in the hay during spring."We try to produce between 50 and 60 big round bales on about 12 acres of land," she adds."We're not expecting more than about 12 to 15 bales, if that."Droughts have been declared in Yorkshire, the North West and the East and West Midlands this year.
Among the animals at Beetle Bank Farm are sheep, llamas, guinea pigs, rabbits, goats, cows and pigs - all of which eat hay. Angela estimates that she goes through about half a round bale of hay each day to keep the animals fed. Although she is used to buying in hay to top up her own supply, she will now need to buy a lot more."It's about to get a lot more expensive I suspect, so we could be in for a rough ride," the farmer says."We're not quite sure how the whole winter is going to pan out yet. "It's quite a sad time because we collect animals as we go and keep hold of our favourite ones and that might not be possible for the future if you never know whether your animals have got anything to eat or not."The recent rain will be too little too late for Beetle Bank and might actually slow down visitor trade, she says."But this is Britain and the weather pleases itself, there's no rhyme or reason to any of it anymore," Angela shrugs.
Over in West Yorkshire, Lucy and Chad Stevens are the fifth generation of the family to run the 200-acre cattle and arable farm. Harvesting is already half finished at Horncastle Farm, in Havercroft between Wakefield and Pontefract, but this time last year it had not even started. "This is earlier than I can ever remember and we've been here ten years," Chad says.This year is set to be the earliest harvest since 2006, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, due to hot, dry conditions causing crops to mature faster. "The crops looked better than last year but they're still not great," Chad admits. "They've just not grown and reached the full potential that we wanted, so the yield's not there and the quality's probably not going to be there."
The dry weather is also having an impact on the farm's animals."If it is dry, there is no grass, and if there is no grass, there is nothing for them to eat, so you end up with very hungry animals," Lucy says."We're having to supplement their feeds with the winter stores of hay and we're buying in food for them, which is obviously very expensive."Dry conditions are also having an impact on the couple's plans for autumn. "We planted 10,000 pumpkin seeds and you would hope each seed would grow a couple of pumpkins, but I think we'll be getting more like in the hundreds than the thousands," Lucy says."It means potentially we'll be buying them for the pumpkin festival, which after we've paid to plant them, to then buy them in will probably be expensive."However, the farmers try to remain positive in the face of adversity. "We're going to plant the crop again next year even though we've had two bad years, because it's ingrained in us," Chad says. "It's what we do, it's what we want to do, we want to provide that food. "It does frighten me what the climate's doing at the minute and I am worried about what next year's going to bring."But there's one thing for certain, we will keep going and we will do our best."
Richard Bramley owns an arable farm between Kelfield and Riccall, near Selby, where he grows potatoes, sugar beet, wheat and barley. "I would say, except for winter barley which was a fairly good yield, just about everything else has been about 25% down on what I would expect," Richard says. "We've got the added problem that the sale prices are particularly poor as well, we're not getting a lot more than we were getting 30 years ago. "It's disappointing, it's off the back of two years that have been affected by wet weather."According to Richard, there are very few ways that farmers can get financial support if they have a poor harvest."We can't control the weather but farmers have got to have the resilience to be able to sow next year's crops and we do that with the money that we've earned from this year's crops," he says. "There comes a point where you start to get into a very difficult situation and you're having to borrow money."He says farmers need a "backstop" to help them if they have a bad year.To make extra cash, farms are diversifying and Richard says he opened a tourism business 20 years ago. "It's a crazy situation when people who are producing food and managing the countryside have to source an income from elsewhere to continue to do that," he adds.
Environment Secretary Steve Reed says the government's commitment to farming and food security is "steadfast"."We are slashing costs and red tape for food producers to export to the EU, have appointed former NFU president Baroness Minette Batters to recommend reforms to boost farmers' profits, and we're ensuring farmers get a bigger share of food contracts across our schools, hospitals, and prisons," he adds.

Tens of thousands of people have been warned to restrict their water use and only turn on the taps when essential, just days before the UK is set to be gripped by its fourth heatwave. South East Water (SEW) has told customers in Sussex that water reservoirs in the area are 'falling quicker and earlier than usual'. People in the area have been asked to only use water for essential use, such as for drinking, washing and cooking. SEW already has a hosepipe ban in place in Sussex and Kent, but has warned it is monitoring water supplies in parts of Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire to see if further restrictions are needed. More than 8.5 million UK households are currently under hosepipe bans, with Southern Water, Thames Water and Yorkshire Water also bringing in restrictions following a spell of warm weather in July. The latest warning comes as a yellow heat health alert has been issued for large parts of the UK next week, with temperatures set to soar past 30C in some areas. The UK Health Security Agency heat warning, cautioning 'significant impacts' across health and social care services, is in place from 12pm on Monday until 6pm on Wednesday. The alert covers Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands, the East of England, the South East and the South West. Temperatures are set to hit 27C in parts of southern England over the weekend, and then rise to over 30C in parts of central, southern and eastern England on Monday and Tuesday. Ahead of the latest heatwave, a spokesperson for South East Water warned: 'Our surface water reservoirs, Ardingly and Arlington, are an important source of water and are falling quicker and earlier than usual. 'Most of the water in them is taken from the nearby rivers, whose flow is much lower than normal because of multiple heatwaves. 'The reservoirs have not been this low at this time of year since the drought of 2022 and, with more warm weather due very soon, we're asking people to protect resources and keep water use around the home to essential purposes only – namely drinking, washing and cooking.' Steven Keates at the Met Office said: 'We're confident that temperatures will increase markedly by the start of next week, reaching the low 30s Celsius in parts of England on Monday and perhaps the mid-30s in a few places on Tuesday. 'However, the length of this warm spell is still uncertain, and it is possible that high temperatures could persist further into next week, particularly in the south'. The fourth heatwave this year follows one in June and two in July. Authorities register a heatwave when a location records a period of at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold. This threshold varies depending on the area, from 25C in Scotland to 28C in London.

A wildfire in Dorset that spread rapidly due to windy conditions and led to 20 homes being evacuated has been brought under blaze at Holt Heath, near Wimborne, broke out on Saturday at about 11:10 BST, with about 100 firefighters sent to tackle the fast-moving & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews had worked extremely hard to bring it under control and had saved one property from the fire service declared a major incident due to the size of the fire and the number of crews at a heath and forest fire at Newton Heath, that has been burning since last Sunday. Firefighters from stations in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Devon and Somerset have been helping the Dorset chief fire officer Darren Langdown said: "We are extremely grateful to our neighbouring services for the support they are giving us, and I can only praise all of our staff who are working so hard in extremely arduous conditions."The Holt Road has been closed at the junction with Higher Road, as well as in Holt Heath village near the pub. People are being urged to say away from the fire at Newton Heath, between Corfe Castle and Swanage, has destroyed an area about the size of 35 football pitches since it broke out last the fire at Newton Heath is believed to have been started deliberately, the cause of the fire at Holt Heath is currently unknown. Homes evacuated and major incident declared as wildfire spreads near Bournemouth

A major incident has been declared as about 100 firefighters are tackling a fire ripping through Holt Heath in Bournemouth. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue are fighting to control the blaze which broke out near Wimbourne just after 11am this morning. Locals have been advised to stay clear of the area and 20 homes have been evacuated as residents are being ordered to keep their windows and doors shut. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service are currently also fighting another blaze at Newton Heath, near Swanage, which broke out last Sunday on August 3 and is the size of about 35 football pitches. Darren Langdown, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service's assistant chief fire officer, said the force was 'extremely grateful' to neighbouring services from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who have helped battle the fire. Langdown said: 'We have declared a major incident both due to the size of the fire at Holt Heath, and also the impact of this and Newton Heath on our overall availability of resources.' He also urged the public not to fly drones near the fire, as it could interfere with those currently being used by the fire service crews. The Holt Heath fire, which covers an area about 1000m x 800m, has resulted in road closures in Holt Heath village and at the junction between Holt Road and Higher Road. Windy conditions are said to be making the fire harder to tackle, as firefighters are trying to surround the area to prevent it spreading further. Residents compared the scene to a 'horror movie' and dog walkers quickly fled the scene as people miles away spotted billowing smoke from the Heath. One dog walker, Marcus Lastra, told the Bournemouth Echo that he witnessed the fire start as smoke rising in the distance, before quickly growing into a huge fire. Lastra said: 'Because it's an open area, the flames spread very quickly in the wind. In those moments before the fire brigade got there, it had really taken hold. 'They started spraying parts of it, but then another section caught fire an it just spread and spread. 'There was mayhem on the main road because people were stopping to take pictures.' Chloe Mountford, from Northbourne, said that her husband first spotted it from their son's bedroom window. She said: 'We're in Northbourne, so it's a long way away too but we could still see the smoke from our house's window. 'It's on a hill, so you could see it straight away. Every time the breeze went past, you'd see it's all showing and it's all getting bigger. Four hours later it was still about the same, with a lot of smoke.' Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service said: 'We are currently dealing with a large fire at Holt Heath. 'This fire is spreading quickly and we strongly advise people to stay away from the area for their own safety. 'If you are a local resident you are advised to keep doors and windows closed.' Whilst the Newton Heath fire is thought to have been started deliberately, is not yet clear how the blaze at Holt Heath began.
