TOKYO – Gripping paintbrush and crayon, the artist known as Thumbelina splodges and splats with merry abandon, the one-year-old star of a Tokyo exhibition that goes on way past her bedtime.
Abstract paintings by the toddler are on sale for 33,000 yen (S$300) each at her debut show at the hip gallery Decameron, tucked above a bar in the Kabukicho red-light district.
Thumbelina's vivid style is 'babyish but mysteriously dexterous', said gallery director – and matchmaker of her parents – Dan Isomura.
'I thought, 'wow, these are legit artworks',' contemporary artist Isomura, 32, said, describing his first impression of her free-form creations.

Colourful smudges adorn tatami mats and tables at the 21-month-old's suburban home, where her mother patiently helps twist open paint tubes and squeeze them onto paper.
'I can see this rhythm in her movements and patterns. She knows what she's doing,' said the evacuee in her 20s from Ukraine, asking to remain anonymous for privacy reasons.
As a fellow artist focusing on Japanese calligraphy, she is jealous of her daughter's first solo exhibition, she joked, though, of course, 'I'm happy, as a mum'.
Once, she thought her daughter might help her with work, but now, 'I'm her assistant'.

After Russia invaded in 2022, Thumbelina's mother left Ukraine's eastern Donbas region – her 'very pathological, violent' homeland torn apart by war. She found herself on a plane to Japan, having consulted a website helping Ukrainians find housing worldwide.
A chance seating beside Isomura , who had only boarded because of two delayed flights, changed her life. Amazed to learn they were both artists, the pair kept in touch and, later, through Isomura's introduction, she met her future husband.
'Dan is our angel, you know, like Cupid,' she said.
The couple then had Thumbelina – not her real name – whose paintings inspired Isomura.

At first, he had assumed the toddler was scribbling randomly, like she was playing in the mud.
But when he saw Thumbelina in action, she seemed to signal each time she considered her drawing complete, prompting her mother to give her a fresh sheet.
The fact that Thumbelina sometimes demands a specific colour, develops shapes from paint droplets and finishes voluntarily suggests a will at work, he said.
'Some may say her mother's involvement means these are not Thumbelina's works,' Isomura said. But 'for a baby, a mother is part of their body'.
In any case, adult artists are not fully independent, Isomura argued, as they rarely break free of store-bought paints or conventional canvases. 'We operate under the illusion of solitary creation, while in fact, we rely heavily on systems built by others,' he said.
The exhibition, Isomura's first as director of Decameron, opened in March and runs until mid-May. But most of the time it is on, from 8pm to 5am , Thumbelina will likely be fast asleep.

One recent night at the gallery, an admiring visitor said the paintings had an innocent charm.
'We instinctively try to draw skilfully because we've grown used to having our paintings evaluated by others', said Ms Yuri Kuroda, 45. 'But it feels like she doesn't care at all about whether it's good or bad. It's a mindset we can never return to.'
So, would she pay $300 to take one home? 'I'm tempted,' Ms Kuroda said with a chuckle. AFP

Singapore Father's Day guide: 88 ways to spoil dad

Like Mother's Day, Father's Day has a tendency to sneak up on us. One moment you're choosing between latte or cappuccino, the next you're scrambling for dinner reservations or panic-buying a 'World's Best Dad' mug that he'll politely pretend to love. But not this year. Whether your dad is the strong, silent type who gets nostalgic about his youthful days, or a karaoke mic hog who knows every word to Eagles' songs, it's time to show up like the world's most prepared child. That doesn't mean big gestures – just thoughtful ones. Father's Day is about being present, paying attention, and letting him know he's appreciated. Of course, if you're also after the perfect bottle of Japanese single malt, a hand-stitched wallet, or a dinner reservation he can brag about, don't worry – we've got that covered too. Here's 101 ways to celebrate the big man on Jun 15. Thoughtful gestures 1. Wake up early and make him coffee before he asks. When two superstars meet, fans can go wild. Jay Chou's recent outing with Japanese singer-actor Tomohisa Yamashita in Kyoto led to the former's makeup artist and friend, Du Guozhang, being caught in the crossfire. In videos posted by fans on Douyin, the King of Mandopop, 46, can be seen exiting what appears to be a restaurant with Tomohisa, 40, surrounded by a large crowd of people as they try to get into a van. Jay posted on his Instagram Story later: "Brother Du broke his bones at two parts of his leg, please say hello from afar, don't follow! "But he's still very humorous, so I'm relieved." Du can be seen in a wheelchair with his left leg in a cast. Jay joked in a follow-up Instagram Story: "I feel bad for Brother Du, but I still want to ask if anyone took a photo of him falling down." Jay shared Instagram posts of himself and Tomohisa in Kyoto over the last few days. Gamers get hold of Nintendo's hotly awaited Switch 2

[TOKYO] Gamers on Thursday finally got their hands on Nintendo's new Switch 2 console, which could score record early sales for the Japanese Super Mario creator. Featuring a bigger screen and more processing power, the device is an upgrade to the Switch, which became a global phenomenon with hit games such as Animal Crossing. The original Switch has sold 152 million units since its 2017 release, making it the third best-selling console ever. At a Tokyo electronics store on Thursday morning, Nintendo fans - including 24-year-old Lei Wang, a recent graduate from China - queued to collect their devices. He had been 'shocked' to win a pre-order lottery, as none of his friends had been selected. 'It's basically just me who got picked... so I don't really want to say anything' to them, he laughed. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up Shinichi Sekiguchi, 31, said he was so excited he forgot to bring his phone, while 33-year-old Kuro said she had taken a day off work to play with her new device. 'The improved graphics and the ability to play with a larger group - I think that's a big deal,' she said. Serkan Toto from Tokyo consultancy Kantan Games said he 'would not be surprised to see Switch 2 breaking sales records in the next weeks and months'. In Japan, Nintendo's online store had 2.2 million pre-order applications for the Switch 2 - an 'insane number the industry has never seen before', Toto told AFP. Worth the price? The Switch 2 has eight times the memory of the first Switch, and its controllers, which attach with magnets, can also be used like a desktop computer mouse. New functions allowing users to chat as they play online and temporarily share games with friends could also be a big draw for young audiences used to watching game streamers. Nintendo has its work cut out to match the overall success of the original, however. Challenges include uncertainty over US trade tariffs and whether it can convince enough people to pay the high price for its new device. The Switch 2 costs US$449.99 in the United States, more than the original's launch price of US$299.99. Both are hybrid consoles which can connect to a TV or be played on the go. New Switch 2 games such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World - which allow players to go exploring off-grid - are also more expensive than existing titles. 'After playing it, I think it's worth the price,' 24-year-old aspiring filmmaker Steven Paterno told AFP at a Nintendo launch event in New York City. 'I loved the original Switch, but I had to admit the Switch 2 really tops it.' Cancelled pre-orders Retailers in the United States, Europe and other major markets are gearing up for a rush of excited fans, with some stores opening at midnight to welcome them. 'I'm very excited to pick it up at midnight,' 22-year-old graduate Angel Caceres said at the New York launch event. 'I'm going to be very tired after that.' Supply pressures have forced some retailers to cancel orders, with Britain's Game saying it is 'working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible'. Nintendo forecasts it will ship 15 million Switch 2 consoles in the current financial year, roughly equal to the original console in the same period after its release. The Switch 2 'is priced relatively high' compared to its predecessor, the company's president Shuntaro Furukawa said at a financial results briefing in May. So it 'will not be easy' to keep initial momentum going, he warned. While Nintendo is diversifying into theme parks and hit movies, around 90 per cent of its revenue still comes from the Switch business, analysts say. AFP
