Wales' rugby league youngsters have been making their mark

The U16s, U18s and Students teams all enjoyed success.
Clive Griffiths made a welcome return to where it all started for him as a head coach, with Wales Students, coaching them to a 34-10 win over Scotland in the opening match of the Student Four Nations at the University of Nottingham.
It was Wales Students' first international win since they returned after the pandemic in 2023, and after losing the last five matches, one with their heaviest ever defeat and two more in the top ten losses, this win, orchestrated almost perfectly from start to finish, was a welcome sight.
The win set the standard for what will be a tough week for Wales, which concludes against Ireland on Saturday.
Wales scored seven tries in their win, as did England as they beat Ireland 40-18.
Lewis Ingram and Thomas Moore grabbed two tries apiece with Finlay Northrop, Lewis Howells and Leo Jones also crossing the whitewash.
Wales Students lost out 42-0 to England Students in the Four Nations tournament.
Jamie O'Keeffe opened the scoring for England at Nottingham and that was to be the first of nine tries on the day.
Leon Stewart soon finished off a sweeping passing move, before Wales enjoyed a brief spell of possession in the England half for the first time in the game.
When England re-entered the Welsh half, Ben Bell-Thorn grabbed the next try, converted by Oli Winterbottom.
Winterbottom added to his and England's points tally with a try direct from a scrum just five minutes before the interval. Bell-Thorn then powered his way over the line for what turned out to be the last play of a one-sided first half.
Wales attacked well at the start of the second half and were unlucky not to score, Lewis Ingram getting close as he was held just short of the line.
Ben O'Donnell, Teddy Davidson, Charlie Yeomans and Dan Perry added further England scores.
North Wales Crusaders' teenager Evan Rowlands and Salford's Ralf Roberts, who hails from Wrexham, were in the U18s side that beat Scotland 34-20.
That means Wales go into a winner-takes-all match against England next month in the final round in a thriller at Grangemouth RUFC.
There were less than ten minutes on the clock when Alex Richardson scored a try to give Wales the lead and Kyson Rees added the conversion.
Scotland hit back on 15 minutes thanks to a Harrison Goldthorpe try. Shaun Callan converted to level the scores.
It wasn't long before Wales regained the lead through an unconverted Rowlands try, but Scotland went into the break 14-10 to the good due to tries from Harry Woodard and Max Erasmus.
Unfortunately for Wales, errors were costing them and Scotland capitalised. They increased their lead 10 minutes into the second half through an Isaac Maclean try that Callan converted.
But then two back-to-back tries from Wales turned the game around. Firstly from Dan Wilds with Jack Wilcox converting, before he scored a try of his own from kick-off. Gabrielson kicked the goal and Wales were 22-20 up.
Then with eight minutes to go, an Ethan Williams try increased Wales' lead to 26-20. Gabrielson couldn't convert so Wales were just one score ahead in the dying stages of the match.
Wales sealed the game thanks to an excellent try from Oscar Jones just three minutes from the end, quickly followed up by Richardson's second and Wales' seventh as the final whistle blew.
Wales, coached by Paul Berry, are top of the U16 Four Nations table after a 40-18 success over the Scots.
Following England's draw with Ireland, a draw against the English in a fortnight will be enough to give Wales their third successive Four Nations title.
Elis Thomas (2), Matthew Clatworthy, Evan Williams, Harry Wrigglesworth, Tyler Mills and Charlie Eatly got the tries for Wales.

Sport stars pay tribute to late Doddie Weir in birthday video

Rugby stars Kenny Logan and Rob Wainwright and other sporting legends have paid tribute to the late Doddie Weir in a video released on what would have been his 55th birthday. The video has been created to honour the memory of Weir, and the legacy of the foundation he set up to find effective treatments for motor neurone disease (MND) after he was diagnosed with it in 2016. Weir founded the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation in 2017, and died in November 2022 aged 52. Those in the video include Olympic swimming medallist Duncan Scott, Olympic curling medallist Eve Muirhead, broadcaster and ex-footballer Ally McCoist, former England rugby player Mike Tindall and British and Irish Lions fly-half Fin Smith. Supporters from across the UK will wear Doddie tartan to work on Friday July 4, as part of a tradition marking what would have been the former rugby player's birthday. Kenny Logan, who played alongside Doddie as part of the 1999 Five Nations-winning Scotland side, said: 'Doddie was a leader in life, and he remains a leader in death. 'His memory inspires thousands of people, both inside and outside of the MND community, to take action and help bring an end to this devastating disease. 'We all know Doddie should still be here with us. He brought light and laughter into every room, even in the darkest days. It's up to all of us to dig deep, keep fundraising and finish what he started. 'We do it because we miss him. We do it because we love him. And we do it because nobody else should have to go through what he and his family did.' The My Name'5 Doddie Foundation has now committed almost £20 million to targeted research projects and launched a Catalysing A Cure strategy to speed up the search for effective treatments. Earlier this year it pledged £4 million to the MND Discovery Network, a new UK-wide initiative connecting leading scientists to accelerate progress. The film also features Jennie Starkey, who is living with MND and is part of the Foundation's Discovery Network board. The video comes after the end of the Doddie's Lions Challenge, in which a team led by Logan and including Ally McCoist, Gabby Logan, and Doddie's widow Kathy, cycled 555 miles around the island of Ireland in five days to deliver the match ball for the British and Irish Lions vs Argentina fixture in Dublin. The ride has so far raised almost £650,000 for MND research. My Name'5 Doddie Foundation chief executive Nicola Roseman, said: 'Doddie's spirit continues to galvanise the MND community. 'The outpouring of support and emotion on what would have been his 55th birthday shows just how many lives he touched and how much his story still matters. It also reminds us that there is still work to be done. 'Every birthday that passes without Doddie is another reminder of the urgency of our mission.'

Caerphilly secondary school pupils win STEM challenge

The group from St Martin's School in Caerphilly will now enjoy a VIP visit to Silverstone after winning the British Council's Learning Sectors competition. Supported by Formula 1, the programme connects schools in the UK, South Africa, and India to tackle real-world science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) challenges. Francisco Lopez, lead teacher at St Martin's School, said: "What started as a small school project quickly grew beyond expectations. "The students worked independently, reached out to experts such as Welsh Water and developed not just one idea but a range of thoughtful, realistic solutions. "They learned that global issues like water scarcity aren't just engineering problems – they involve people, politics, and empathy." The Caerphilly pupils partnered with Hoërskool Koffiefontein in South Africa, whose students highlighted a serious water supply issue in their town. Through video calls and research, the Welsh students developed a plan addressing technical solutions and the broader social and economic context of the crisis. In return, the South African pupils explored the UK's cost of living crisis, focusing on ways to reduce energy and heating costs. Mr Lopez said the win was a shock. He said: "I was over the moon – especially for the students. "I ran to tell the headteacher. "The competition across the UK was fierce, and honestly, I didn't expect to win. "I had to read the announcement email twice. "This is a memory they'll carry for the rest of their lives. "Some are big F1 fans and they couldn't believe they'd be VIP guests." As part of their prize, the eight-strong team – four boys and four girls – will meet Formula 1 engineers, tour the paddock, and see how STEM is used in elite motorsport. The Learning Sectors programme aims to reach 700 schools worldwide in its first year.

Leah this week opened up on England's secret weapon for the tournament. The defender believes Michelle Agyemang will give England a different attacking edge after her stunning debut. Williamson says she "could only dream of having" Agyemang's athleticism after going toe-to-toe with the striker during training. Earlier in the week, The Sun revealed that Prince William gave a surprise send-off to the Lionesses before they flew off to the Euros. The Prince of Wales presented the team with their shirts at the FA's St George's Park ahead of their journey to Switzerland. He chatted with coach Sarina Wiegman and team captain Leah Williamson. William is also aiming to fly to Switzerland next month to cheer on the Lionesses as they defend their crown. The Prince is throwing his support behind the national women's team — just as in 2022 when he was at Wembley to watch them win the title. Wills will attend at least one group game, maybe more depending on his royal commitments.
