Jerry Butler, soul hitmaker and Illinois politician, dies aged 85

The Guardian21-02-2025
Jerry Butler, the US singer and songwriter who had a string of 1960s pop and soul hits before a long career in Illinois politics, has died aged 85.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Butler died at home on Thursday. He had been living with Parkinson's disease.
Born to a poor family in Mississippi and then raised in Chicago, Butler originally trained to be a chef – 'Jerry could cook like somebody's mama,' Smokey Robinson later said – but became an influential and versatile musician who came of age as soul music evolved out of doo-wop and mid-century pop.
He brought his gospel music background to bear on one of his earliest songs, For Your Precious Love – named as one of the 500 greatest of all time by Rolling Stone in 2004 – which he wrote and then performed with his group Jerry Butler and the Impressions, taking it to No 11 in the US charts in 1958.
The group also featured Butler's childhood friend Curtis Mayfield, who fronted them after Butler left for a solo career – they found further success with songs such as People Get Ready. But the Butler-Mayfield collaboration continued, with Mayfield writing or co-writing a number of solo Butler songs, including He Will Break Your Heart, a No 7 hit in 1960. Butler also co-wrote other hits, such as Otis Redding's I've Been Loving You Too Long.
Butler also found success with his takes on a series of pop standards, including Moon River and Make It Easy on Yourself, but his biggest hit of all was self-penned: Only the Strong Survive, which reached No 4 in 1969. It was co-written with powerhouse Philadelphia duo Gamble and Huff, and together they scored a number of other hits. He earned the nickname 'Iceman' for his cool, collected demeanour on stage: 'I came through a period when the Isley Brothers were jumping off the stage, and James Brown was sliding across the floor. But I am just a standup singer,' he said.
A cover of He Will Break Your Heart became a US No 1 hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn in 1975, under the title He Don't Love You (Like I Love You). But his own musical success waned in that decade, and he ended up focusing on a beer distribution company he'd founded in 1973.
Come the 1980s, he decided to move into politics, and in 1986 was elected to the Board of Commissioners in Cook County, Illinois – it acts as the legislature for the area, and oversees courts, prisons, healthcare and more. He held a position on the 17-strong board until his retirement in 2018.
He was made a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 as a member of the Impressions, and his sizeable songbook was also later sampled by hip-hop artists including Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliott.

'I got kicked out of Parliament for my brutal takedown of Boris Johnson'

Dawn Butler has said there's no point in being an MP if it's not to 'speak truth to power' as she recounted being kicked out of Parliament for insulting Boris Johnson A Labour MP who was kicked out of Parliament for calling Boris Johnson a one-word insult has doubled down with a more brutal attack. ‌ Appearing on The Mirror 's new show Party Games, Dawn Butler said the former Tory PM was "gaslighting the whole country" looked back on being thrown out of the Commons in 2021. The moment came up as the Labour MP for Brent East played 'Never Have I Ever?' with The Mirror's Sophie Huskisson - and was asked 'Never Have I Ever been told off by the Speaker'. ‌ The Mirror's new YouTube show Party Games, which launched on Saturday, sees MPs play a series of games, which tease out funny stories, emotional moments and political jabs from MPs. You can watch the first episode with Ms Butler on YouTube by clicking here. ‌ 'I played Hug, Marry, Avoid with Labour MP Dawn Butler and couldn't stop laughing' Asked if she'd ever been told off by the Speaker in the House of Commons, Ms Butler responded: 'Well obviously I got thrown out of Parliament for calling Boris Johnson a liar.' Pressed why she called him that, she continued: 'Because he was a liar! He lied over and over and over again. 'I was just like, come on, he's gaslighting the whole country. And I'd had enough. I'm that kind of conviction politician, so what is the point in me being here if I'm not going to sort of speak truth to power? The doorkeepers came up to me and said, I had to leave Parliament - the whole estate - straight away, or do I need to be escorted off? And I was like, good job I had my keys on me.' The row happened in 2021 during a discussion in the Commons on the prospect of a public inquiry into the government's handling of the pandemic. Under the Commons rules, it is forbidden to call another MP a liar and considered unparliamentary language. But Ms Butler had had enough of Mr Johnson's behaviour during the pandemic and told the Commons: "Poor people in our country have paid with their lives because the Prime Minister has spent the last 18 months misleading this House and the country over and over again." ‌ She highlighted disputed claims made by the PM about the Covid vaccination programme, adding: "It's dangerous to lie in a pandemic. I am disappointed the Prime Minister has not come to the House to correct the record and correct the fact that he has lied to the House and the country over and over again." Ms Butler refused and said: "It's funny that we get in trouble in this place for calling out the lie rather than the person lying." After being asked to reflect on her words, she added: "I've reflected on my words and somebody needs to tell the truth in this House that the Prime Minister has lied." ‌ Here's a look at some of the other best moments from the episode Would you rather be London mayor or Prime Minister? 'London mayor. To represent London - and I'm a Londoner through, born in East London - just having London the way I have experienced it and see it, and just making London wonderful for everyone, and everyone being sort of proud of London and being a Londoner, yeah, I'd love to be Mayor of London.' Asked if she'd be running in the next mayoral election, she added: 'Once there's a vacancy, I will put my hat in the ring.' ‌ What was your greatest moment in politics? 'I was the first black female MP to ever stand at that despatch box as a government minister. And when I think back, I think, God, I made history. And a few weeks before, we were talking about the abolition of slavery, and I thought, God, they'd all be spinning in their graves knowing that there's a black woman at the dispatch box representing Her Majesty's Government. And so that's one of my proudest moments.' Watch the Mirror's YouTube show Party Games IT is not often you get to play games with elected Members of Parliament. But it is exactly what I am doing on The Mirror's show, Party Games, which was launched last night. In the programme on the Mirror's YouTube channel, I host familiar faces from across the political spectrum for a party like no other. Wearing an obligatory party hat, I spin a wheel of fortune to decide which games to play - with each one having its own special ability to tease out funny stories, emotional moments and, of course, some political points from MPs. They include 'Would You Rather?' where MPs have to make a painful choice out of two options, and 'Never Have I Ever?', There is also the 'Ask Me Anything' round and 'Hug, Marry, Avoid', where MPs have to choose who'd they'd hug, marry or avoid out of a given list of three people. The '30-Second Pitch' round is where the guest gets to talk for 30 seconds about an issue, cause or campaign they are passionate about. In an age where MPs face increasingly vicious intimidation, hate and violence, The Mirror's show hopes to allow viewers to get to know the humans behind the pomp of Westminster. You can watch Party Games on YouTube now. ‌ Would you rather stand out or follow the crowd? 'You have to stand out from the crowd, especially if you're a Black woman, what's the point? You're always going to stand out, right? And I remember somebody saying to me that if I want to be taken seriously as a politician, I need to tone down my dress. And that was it: I was like, illuminate! You're going to need sunglasses when I walk in a room.' What is an issue you are passionate about? 'My summer campaign 2025 is about cleaning up our high streets. At the moment, councils are not allowed to say no to betting shops and adult gaming centres. That's why we have so many in poorer areas. So what I want to do is make sure we change the law - the 2005 Gambling Act - so that councils can have more of a say, so that people can have more of a say, because our high streets deserve to be better, we deserve high streets that are full of beautiful complexity and not so many betting shops.'

Famous comedian 'escorted out' of Sir Mick Jagger's birthday after incident

Comedian and Celebs Go Dating narrator Rob Beckett has revealed he was 'frogmarched' out of Rolling Stones legend Sir Mick Jagger's 82nd birthday party after a night of heavy drinking. Beckett, 38, scored an invite to the exclusive celebration at Chelsea hotspot The Rex Rooms as the plus one of fellow comic Jimmy Carr. The star-studded guest list included Ronnie Wood, Sacha Baron Cohen, broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, and fashion icon Lulu Guinness – but Beckett's rock 'n' roll evening ended in a rather less glamorous fashion. Speaking on The Parenting Hell podcast with co-host Josh Widdicombe, Beckett admitted he'd arrived at the bash already several drinks deep, having spent the earlier part of the evening celebrating at Oasis's long-awaited reunion gig at Wembley Stadium. 'It was a tiny little back room and Mick Jagger was there,' Beckett recalled. 'Obviously, a lot of his ex-wives and children from his ex-wives. There was Mariella Frostrup, someone Guinness – Lulu – this sort of fashion lady who looked like Lady Gaga, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ronnie Wood… It was really nice. They were really chatty and hospitable.' While Beckett briefly greeted the Rolling Stones frontman, he confessed he never struck up a proper conversation with Jagger, who was holding court in a separate room. Instead, he spent time chatting to Ronnie Wood and his wife Sally, all while realising he was becoming far too drunk to hold his own among rock royalty. 'I've had six pints of lager, two espresso martinis, and I'd say a bottle and a half of rosé,' Beckett admitted. 'I'm stood there wearing a Stone Island anorak with a vodka and soda after being on a motorbike, chatting to Ronnie and Sally Wood and Jimmy Carr, and I'm just talking absolute s***.' More Trending Sensing the situation was spiralling, Beckett said he decided to make an exit – but it wasn't exactly a discreet one. 'I got like frogmarched out by four people that were holding on to me,' he laughed. 'Maybe I got kicked out, I don't know! They're walking me out like they're extracting me, like I'm a Rolling Stone and there's 10,000 people trying to grab me.' The party continued without him, but Beckett still remembers the night happily: 'It was one of the best nights of my life,' he insisted, despite – or perhaps because of – his rock 'n' roll-worthy ejection. Rob Beckett 'frogmarched' out of Mick Jagger's birthday bash after boozy night

Rob Beckett has lifted the lid on what went on during his boozy night at Mick Jagger's birthday party, admitting he was kicked out of the bash and looked after by rocker Ronnie Wood. Rob Beckett has revealed that he was kicked out of Mick Jagger's wild 82nd birthday party last month as he partied with rock legends. Crashing the party as fellow funnyman Jimmy Carr's plus one, Rob was already two sheets to the wind after rocking out at Oasis' Wembley gig, knocking back beer, cocktails and wine, before accepting the last minute invite. ‌ Hotfooting it over to a swanky Chelsea nightclub The Rex Rooms, he couldn't believe his luck as he partied with the rock legends. 'It was a tiny little back room and Mick Jagger was there,' he shared. ‌ 'Obviously, a lot of his ex-wives and children from his ex-wives. There was Mariella Frostrup. Someone Guinness (Lulu), this sort of like fashion lady. She looked like Lady Gaga. Sacha Baron Cohen. Ronnie Wood." ‌ 'It was really nice. They were really chatty and hospitable. The music was quite loud. I said hello to Mick Jagger. I didn't properly chat to him. "Because there was another separate room that had him in it with Sacha Baron Cohen," he continued, talking on the Parenting Hell podcast. Rob isn't the only one who has been letting his hair down. 'And I was chatting to Ronnie Wood and his wife, Sally, who are lovely.' But it all got a bit much for Rob, who started to get the beer fear. 'Then I was like, I'm too p***ed to be here. I was so p***ed. I've had six pints of lager, two espresso martinis, and I'd say a bottle and a half of rose, and just been to the best gig of my life. ‌ And I'm stood wearing a Stone Island anorak with a vodka and soda after being on a motorbike chatting to Ronnie Wood and Sally Wood and Jimmy Carr. And I'm just talking absolute s****.' Making a beeline for the door in his drunk state, he was helped on his way by some burly security. 'I got like frog marched out by four people that were like holding on to me,' he laughed. Teased by co-host Josh Widdecombe that he'd been forcibly ejected, he mused: 'Maybe I got kicked out. I don't know! They're walking me out, like they're extracting me, like I'm a Rolling Stone and there's like 10,000 people trying to grab me.' He woke up in the morning to a banging headache and a friendly check in from his new pals Ronnie and Sally Wood. 'They said they wanted to come to a gig!' he squeals. "That was one of the most mental nights of my life.'
