KOTA BHARU, June 24 (Bernama) -- While her peers studied with full vision, Tengku Norhanis Tengku Othman relied on just one eye, defying all odds to earn the title of Kelantan's top special needs candidate in the 2024 STPM with a perfect CGPA of 4.00.
The gentle smile of the 19-year-old belies an extraordinary story of resilience. At age two, she was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer, and had to have her left eye removed to save her life.
'Although I was very young then, I knew life wasn't about complaining. I believed God still gave me hope,' she told reporters at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Naim Lilbanat today.
Tengku Norhanis sat for Pengajian Am, Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Arab, Usuluddin dan Syaria.
'My goal was just 3.7, and I would've been grateful for that. But when I found out I got 4.00, I broke down in tears. Allah gave me more than I asked for,' said the student who was granted a 30-minute time extension as a special needs candidate.
Never viewing her condition as a barrier, Tengku Norhanis studied with discipline and consistency, only pausing when headaches struck due to the strain on her right eye, which she depends on to read and write.
The seventh of eight siblings, she was raised in a modest but loving home in Kampung Tanjong, Tumpat. Her mother, Gayah Yazid, 61, is a retired teacher, while her father, Tengku Othman Tuan Yahya, 63, runs a soft drink business.
'She's an extraordinary child. We never imagined she'd achieve this kind of result. But looking at her determination, she truly deserves the best,' said Gayah.
Norhanis aspires to pursue a degree in Tahfiz and Qiraati Education at Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor.

'We will not stop': Transport ministers says Indonesia vows to find 29 missing after ferry sinks

Indonesian rescuers search for missing victims of a ferry accident in the waters off the Bali Strait near Jembrana, on Bali island on July 5, 2025. Hundreds of Indonesian rescuers widened their search for dozens of missing people on July 4, after a ferry sank in rough seas on the way to the resort island of Bali, with six bodies recovered. -- Photo by SONNY TUMBELAKA / AFP JAKARTA (Bernama): Indonesian authorities have pledged to continue a large-scale search and rescue (SAR) operation for 29 people still missing after a passenger ferry sank in the Bali Strait this week. The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya went down late Wednesday night in waters off Ketapang, Banyuwangi, East Java, leaving six dead and 30 of the 65 passengers and crew rescued so far. "We will not stop until all victims are found. This is a humanitarian responsibility that must not be abandoned halfway,' said Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi in a statement. He said search efforts had been reinforced with assets from the Indonesian Navy, including a vessel equipped with sonar capable of detecting underwater objects at depths of up to 400 metres. A helicopter, navy divers from the special forces unit, and experts from the Hydro-Oceanographic Centre have also been deployed. National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) deputy for operations and preparedness, R. Eko Suyatno, said more than 10 vessels from the navy, police, and regional agencies, along with local fishing boats, are involved in the joint operation. The sea search area has been expanded to a 20-nautical-mile radius south of the suspected sinking site, while on land, teams of soldiers, police, and volunteers are combing the Banyuwangi coastline. "Two helicopters are conducting sweeps from north to south as part of the aerial search,' he said. Authorities are also preparing for a possible underwater recovery, with 22 divers having undergone medical examinations and additional equipment staged at the port, he added. The cause of the sinking is still under investigation. - Bernama

Solar Initiative Brings Electricity To Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Lagong

REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS GOMBAK, July 6 (Bernama) -- After more than seven years without electricity, five Orang Asli families in Kampung Bukit Lagong here can finally breathe a sigh of relief as their homes are now powered by solar energy. The solar installation, provided free of charge, was an initiative by the Hawariyyun Welfare Association in collaboration with the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Arshad Ayub Graduate Business School (AAGBS) to provide the community with clean and sustainable energy. AAGBS Dean Prof Dr Norzanah Mat Nor said the initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the villagers and promote a more sustainable lifestyle. bootstrap slideshow 'This benefits especially those living in remote areas with limited access to electricity. Insya-Allah, we plan to continue this effort to help more underserved communities,' she told Bernama after officiating the Solar Power Outreach Programme at Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Lagong here today. The programme also featured talks on solar energy awareness, free health screenings and the distribution of food aid to 100 families. AAGBS senior lecturer Dr Sharizan Sharkawi said the programme was initiated by students under the Leadership and Managing Talent subject, who successfully mobilised various parties to provide sustainable energy solutions and welfare aid to the Orang Asli community. 'The installation, which began on June 21, took about two weeks to complete. So far, five homes have been equipped with solar panels. 'We hope to extend the project to 10 more homes, subject to funding,' she said. Meanwhile, Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Lagong village head Muhammad Asran Tepus said the village, established in 2018, has never had access to electricity, with residents relying on oil lamps and kerosene lights.
