Malaysian Tamil Cinema quality rises thanks to young filmmakers
According to him, the new generation of creators has demonstrated the ability to deliver fresh, high-quality stories - an encouraging sign of positive development within the local film industry.
"The film I watched recently, Mirugasirisham, showcases the kind of quality often seen in works by first-time filmmakers. These are people who started out creating content for social media and YouTube, and now they're making films - and the results are truly impressive,' he said when contacted by Bernama.
Azmir Saifuddin also expressed his admiration for the film's strong storytelling, direction, and performances, noting that it was all the more impressive considering it was produced by newcomers to the industry.
"I was also pleasantly surprised by the storytelling, direction, and acting from this newcomer. The quality is on par with Tamil films from India.
"The problem is that this film hasn't been widely promoted. Many of our viewers still believe that watching local films in cinemas isn't worth it. But they should come out and support these screenings, because the quality of our local productions is now truly comparable,' he said.
He also explained that FINAS remains open and inclusive in its support for local film development, regardless of language or genre.
"We don't limit support based on language or genre. We regularly engage with the industry, including Tamil filmmakers, to understand current issues and trends,' he said.
He added that the improvement in the quality and reception of local Tamil films is evident in the success of C4 Cinta, which recorded box office earnings of over RM2.5 million last year, more than double the earnings of previous local Tamil films.
He also announced that the team behind the acclaimed film Jagat is set to release two new projects this year, one of which is a festival-style film that also promises high production quality.
Meanwhile, Mirugasirisham producer and general manager of Five Star Trading, Dr Sai Suthan Krishnan, said that despite receiving glowing reviews from critics and audiences across various communities, local Tamil films have continued to record disappointing box office figures.
"There are many young and emerging talents in Malaysia who are simply waiting for the right opportunity to showcase their filmmaking skills and tell stories that reflect our regional and cultural Malaysian roots.
"We discovered a strong script by Vijay Ganesh and a talented young team at Sage Heroes. With a like-minded and passionate cast and crew, Mirugasirisham came to life after two years in production,' he said.
Sai said the film has received excellent critical response, with viewers praising both its storytelling and technical execution.
"Every Malaysian who has watched the film, whether Indian or from other communities, has given glowing reviews, particularly for its storytelling and technical aspects. It's an engaging and entertaining two and a half hours, well spent in the cinema appreciating the film's sound and visuals,' he said.
"Producers and filmmakers rely on strong box office numbers to inspire confidence among potential investors. It encourages them to boldly support the next generation of passionate artists and filmmakers, helping to realise bigger dreams and create works of international quality,' he added. - BERNAMA

Malaysia music industry study to address challenges and development
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Communications is implementing a comprehensive Music Industry Development Study to examine critical issues facing the sector. This initiative aims to identify challenges and propose actionable plans for empowering sustainable development within Malaysia's music industry. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the study's broad scope during his parliamentary address. He stated, 'For music, we currently do not have a specific act, therefore the ministry is looking into the best way to ensure that an act is drafted to ensure the welfare, sustainability and development of the music industry.' The minister confirmed the study will refine business models, governance structures, and staffing considerations. It will also examine specific legislative frameworks that could support industry development. Fahmi emphasized the inclusive approach being taken to gather diverse perspectives. He revealed that twenty members have been appointed to the Music Industry Protem Committee representing various sectors. These include composers, lyricists, recording companies, singers, musicians, and academicians. The committee also features representatives from Collective Management Organisations, publishing companies, associations, and event management professionals. Their collective input will directly inform the study's findings and recommendations. Fahmi explained how the study outcomes will guide future regulatory decisions. He said the results would determine 'the availability and need for a specific body to regulate the development of the music industry or to include the music industry in the functions of existing agencies or regulatory bodies.' Separately, the minister addressed proposed amendments to the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia Act 1981. He confirmed these amendments are expected to be tabled in the upcoming parliamentary session scheduled for October. The proposed changes include expanding the act's regulatory scope, governance mechanisms, functions, and enforcement provisions. Amendments will specifically address the membership structure of Finas Corporation Members to include experienced local film industry professionals. The revisions aim to ensure members possess excellent achievement records in local film and credibility in advocating for industry welfare. Key terminology updates are also proposed to align with technological advancements, including redefining terms like 'film', 'film production', and 'film distribution'. New interpretations will be introduced for 'application' and 'content application service' to modernize the legal framework. The amendments seek to enhance Finas' functions in archiving and international promotional activities for local films. Enforcement improvements will focus on implementing fines and compounds related to licensing under Finas. Regarding regional cooperation, Fahmi announced the RIUH X ASEAN 2025 event scheduled for October alongside the 47th ASEAN Summit. This event will showcase musicians from Malaysia and across ASEAN member states. Fahmi described it as 'a good opportunity for us to further strengthen ties between local and foreign musicians, especially to build a spirit among ASEAN countries.' In a press conference today, Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (picture) said both agencies will be instructed to go beyond providing funding by working closely with private sectors, as corporate backers begin to recognise the revenue potential of the creative industry, particularly in film and animation. 'The focus will be on creating synergies between corporate backers and creative producers, with MyCreative Ventures and FINAS facilitating in this matter,' he said. Fahmi added that FINAS is also working on initiatives to expand the export of Malaysian intellectual property (IP) to ASEAN countries. 'Malaysian animation like Upin and Ipin has already found strong audiences in Indonesia, while the local films have been well received in Vietnam and Cambodia. 'FINAS aims to build networks and facilitate the movement of Malaysian IP into the broader Asian market as a starting point,' he added. The press conference also highlighted Riuh X ASEAN Marketplace which will be held on Oct 22 to 25 at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur (KL) which will showcase over 200 retail brands, food vendors, stage performance from local artists and interactive workshops. The event will include the FrequenSEA Music Conference featuring musicians, producers and industry leaders from across ASEAN countries. In addition, the Riuh Gallery pop-up series will be launched on Oct 1 at selected Klang Valley locations presenting indie music, comedy, poetry and visual art performance. Ahead of the October programmes, Riuh Merdeka 2025 will be held on Aug 30 and 31 at Millennium Monument, Putrajaya with 30 hours of nonstop performance, family activities, showcases and fireworks.

LOS ANGELES: Matt Damon narrowly avoided a life-threatening incident during dinner at Jimmy Kimmel's house, after choking on a spare rib that became lodged in his throat for nearly 90 minutes. The late-night host recalled the frightening moment in an interview with Variety, saying the 54-year-old actor had arrived hungry and began eating quickly before the rib got stuck. "He came late, was very hungry, and started eating fast. He started choking on a pork rib. It was stuck in his throat for about an hour and a half," Jimmy, 57, explained. The comedian admitted he panicked at the thought of Damon possibly dying under his roof. "His brother was there. I said, 'We've got to get him to the hospital, because if he dies in my house, I'm going to prison for the rest of my life. I'll never be able to explain this as anything other than a murder.'" Despite repeated attempts, the Heimlich manoeuvre proved unsuccessful. Desperate for a solution, they turned to YouTube tutorials and eventually discovered that eating small pieces of bread might help. The unconventional method worked, with Damon finally able to swallow the rib. "Bread saved him," Kimmel said. "We tried the Heimlich many times. It was too far down." The incident adds another twist to the pair's long-running comedic 'feud,' which began in 2005 when Kimmel joked at the end of his show, "Apologies to Matt Damon, but we ran out of time."
