Alcaraz beats Lehecka in Queen's final to send Wimbledon statement

Khaleej Times22-06-2025
Top seed Carlos Alcaraz edged powerful Czech Jiri Lehecka 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2 to claim his second Queen's Club title and send out a powerful statement ahead of his Wimbledon defence on Sunday.
Spaniard Alcaraz, who triumphed at Queen's a few weeks before claiming his first Wimbledon title in 2023, extended his winning streak to 18 matches but was pushed hard by Lehecka who underlined his own credentials as a rising force.
Alcaraz, 22, pounced at 5-5 to break the Lehecka serve and duly bagged the opening set in 45 minutes.
Lehecka, bidding to become the first Czech to win the Queen's title since Ivan Lendl in 1990, continued going toe-to-toe with the five-times Grand Slam champion and edged the second-set tie-break with some clinical tennis.
Alcaraz had more in his locker though and forged 4-1 ahead in the decider as Lehecka's level finally began to drop on a breezy Andy Murray Arena in west London.
He then broke the 23-year-old Lehecka's serve again to complete victory, letting out a roar of a delight as Lehecka struck a backhand into the net.
While Alcaraz will be seeded number two at Wimbledon behind Jannik Sinner as he bids for a hat trick of titles there, he will arrive in red-hot form and as overwhelming favourite.
He has won 27 of his 28 matches since April, his lone loss coming against Holger Rune in the Barcelona final, and Sunday's win was his fifth title this year.
"This is really special this trophy and this tournament for me," Alcaraz said on court as he clutched the huge piece of silverware. "Jiri had an incredible week and his level is very high and it's a nightmare to play against you."
Lehecka, whose ball-striking and physique are not dissimilar to Lendl's, beat home favourite Jack Draper in the semifinals on Saturday and began full of confidence against Alcaraz whom he beat at the start of the year in Doha.
With serve dominating on the slick lawn, there was nothing between the players until Lehecka made a couple of errors at 5-5 and Alcaraz needed no second invitation to take the set.
The second set followed a similar pattern but it was Lehecka who raised his game in the tiebreak to get a mini-break ahead.
Alcaraz replied to win a sensational point at 3-4, sprinting to retrieve a drop shot and then back to chase down a lob.
But Lehecka did not flinch and banged down an ace. Alcaraz double-faulted at 5-5 and then Lehecka levelled the final.
Lehecka was unable to carry that momentum though and Alcaraz quickly re-established control and surged to victory.
"The goal this week was just to compete and have a few matches on the grass and this final was a gift for me," Alcaraz said. "I just enjoyed the moment and the final, I felt like I was in control most of the time."

Rybakina upsets Sabalenka to reach Cincinnati Open semis, Alcaraz through

Elena Rybakina powered into her first Cincinnati Open semi-final after stunning defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-1 6-4 on Friday, while five-times Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz recovered from a second-set blip to beat Andrey Rublev. The Kazakh ninth seed delivered a fine performance to secure her seventh career win over a top-ranked player, setting up a blockbuster last-four clash with six-times major winner Iga Swiatek in a showdown of Wimbledon champions. Rybakina fired 11 aces throughout the match, earning an impressive 81 per cent of points on her first serve, while saving all five break points she faced as she secured her fifth win over Belarusian Sabalenka in 12 meetings. "I'm happy with the serve. It was the key," former world number three Rybakina said. "We're both big hitters. Today I served really well. If Aryna serves well, it's completely different. Hopefully I continue like this." Earlier, Swiatek advanced to her first WTA 1000 semi-final in 15 months after beating Russian 28th seed Anna Kalinskaya 6-3 6-4. Kalinskaya, who had defeated Swiatek in their only previous meeting, put up a spirited fight by saving four match points, before the Polish third seed converted her fifth opportunity on serve to seal the victory. "I just played my game," Swiatek said. "For sure, it wasn't easy. Just happy I was solid and had the intensity to apply pressure." Russian Veronika Kudermetova carved out a comfortable 6-1 6-2 victory over Varvara Gracheva to reach the semis of Cincinnati for the first time. Kudermetova appears to be back to the form that once carried her into the top-10 as she earned her first WTA 1000 last-four spot since 2023. She will next face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who rallied from a set down to shock twice Grand Slam winner Coco Gauff 2-6 6-4 6-3. "I tried to fight every point and it worked. I'm really happy. Thank you for cheering for me ... because we are in the States ... Coco is from here," Paolini, the French Open and Wimbledon runner-up last year, said. ALCARAZ SURVIVES RUBLEV SCARE In the men's draw, Spanish second seed Alcaraz battled to a 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory over Russian ninth seed Rublev to reach the semi-finals. The 22-year-old Alcaraz was far from his best, committing 15 unforced errors and three double faults in the decider, but capitalising on his lone match point, courtesy of a Rublev double fault, to secure his 15th consecutive Masters 1000 win. "Playing someone like Andrey, when you lose focus on two or three points, it can cost you the set or the match. I just stayed strong mentally and that's what I'm most proud of," Alcaraz said. "It's just accepting the moment, accepting that I am playing a third set, that it's going to be a really tough battle, and I love that." Alcaraz, winner of 37 of his last 39 matches, advanced to his 12th Masters 1000 semi-final, equalling the mark of world number one Jannik Sinner, who faces French qualifier Terence Atmane in the other semi-final. Next up for Alcaraz is third seed Alexander Zverev, who knocked out Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton with a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 win. "I came out today and probably felt the best I've felt in a few months. Was feeling the ball incredibly well from both sides," Zverev, who won the Cincinnati title in 2021, said. But the German struggled physically and called for the doctor in the second set. "In the first set I started feeling not so great and it got progressively worse. But I'm in the semi-finals and I'll do everything I can to be 100% tomorrow."

Atmane stuns Rune to set up semi-final showdown with Sinner, Gauff advances

French qualifier Terence Atmane toppled another top-10 player in Holger Rune on Thursday to line up a semi-final showdown with world number one Jannik Sinner at the Cincinnati Open. Atmane followed up his victory over fourth-ranked Taylor Fritz with a 6-2, 6-3 win over ninth-ranked Rune. The 23-year-old will now face the ultimate test against defending champion Sinner, who said he 'felt great' as he thrashed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-0, 6-2. 'I don't think any words can describe how I feel right now,' the 136th-ranked Atmane said after blasting 22 winners past Rune, 14 of them off his powerful lefty forehand. 'It's pretty insane to be honest,' added Atmane, who will move inside the top 100 in the rankings for the first time. 'I cannot believe it. Being here in the semi-finals of a Masters 1000, breaking into the top 100. It means a lot to me.' He will face a formidable challenge in Wimbledon champion Sinner, who powered through a rapid-fire opening set and bounced back quickly after dropping serve to open the second. Sinner prevailed in a brief 71 minutes as he claimed an eighth victory in a row at this event and his 30th match win this season. 'I felt great on the court today, you could see that,' said the Italian, who turns 24 on Saturday. 'But every day can be different. Let's see what I can do in the semis.' Sinner took advantage of Auger-Aliassime's serving troubles to take the first set in less than 30 minutes, the Canadian delivering three double-faults in the final game. After going down a quick break in the second Sinner broke back to level at 2-2 and advanced as Auger-Aliassime coughed up his eighth double-fault on match point. 'I served well today, that was the key for me,' Sinner said. 'I had a small drop in the second set and I'm happy that I broke back. He moves and serves well, he's difficult to play.' In the day's only other men's match, fifth-seeded Ben Shelton — coming off a title in Toronto — posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jiri Lehecka to book a quarter-final clash with third-seeded Alexander Zverev. French Open champion Coco Gauff, the women's second seed, booked her quarter-final berth with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lucia Bronzetti. 'I could have maybe made some more first serves in that second set, but overall I had a lot of aces and unreturnables,' said Gauff, the 2023 Cincinnati champion who went on to win the US Open title that year. 'I'm happy considering where (my serve) was last week.' Gauff advances to her fifth quarter=final at WTA 1000 or Grand Slam level in 2025 out of 10 tournaments, and improves to 2-0 overall against Bronzetti. The American next takes on seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who crushed 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2. Krejcikova had treatment on her left foot in the second set and her movement was clearly hampered. 'She's a great player and can do anything she wants with the ball,' Paolini, a finalist at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2024, said. 'But I don't think she was at 100 percent today.' France's Varvara Gracheva rallied to beat Germany's Ella Seidel 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 in an error-strewn battle of qualifiers. 'I made her play her best game,' Gracheva said. 'She was so hot at the end of the first set that I could barely see a ball. 'I had to go back to basics, I had so many mistakes. I was doubting myself but I stuck with it.' She will face Veronika Kudermetova, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Poland's Magda Linette. Meanwhile, former world number six Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from the US Open, tournament organisers said on Thursday. The Italian, currently ranked 59th, has not competed since a first-round lost at Wimbledon in June after he had recovered from an abdominal injury. Agencies

Barcelona salaries 2025/26: Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford on big money but Robert Lewandowski top

Barcelona will have their work cut out as they look to better their efforts from last season. Last term, Barcelona completed a domestic treble and enthralled fans on their way to the Liga title, scoring 102 goals in the process. They added to that by also winning the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. With a young and vibrant squad, Barca also reached the Uefa Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2019. Coach Hansi Flick could rely heavily on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal last term while Robert Lewandowski did not disappoint either. Since they are restricted in the transfer market due to financial constraints, the Catalans have focused their attention on youngsters like Yamal, centre-back Pau Cubarsi and midfielder Pedri. They did not stay completely inactive in the summer though. Barca brought in Marcus Rashford on a season-long loan from Manchester United. Back in May, Yamal was rewarded for his fine form when he signed a contract extension which keeps the 18-year-old superstar with the Blaugrana until the end of the 2030-31 season. It also elevated him towards the top end of a hefty wage bill. Given the tight margins within which Barcelona have to operate financially, every player on the payroll has that much more scrutiny on him. Below is the wage list of Barcelona players for the upcoming season. Data collected through reports and Highest-paid players at Barcelona for 2025-26 1. Robert Lewandowski – €400,000 per week 2.
