‘Sweet' was the theme of Morton Grove Valentine's Day community events

Chicago Tribune21-02-2025
Dozens of girls were escorted by their dad or other male to the annual 'My Little Sweetheart Dance' earlier this month at Morton Grove Civic Center. ''
'It's a nice event to have a special night with a parent and child,' said Claire Baumgartner, recreation supervisor for the Morton Grove Park District, which sponsored the event. 'You get some one-on-one time with your child so they can feel special for a night. It's just nice to get dressed up and go dancing.'
According to Baumgartner, new additions to the dance included giving out glow sticks at the end of the night and having sponsor Play and Spin onsite with giveaways, including candy and game cards for activities at the Niles family-friendly entertainment center.
She said My Little Sweetheart Dance included a dinner of chicken, French fries, salad and mostaccioli – all provided by local restaurants – and, of course, music.
The 77 registrants this year were comparable to the approximately 80 dance attendees in 2024, Baumgartner said. Attendees, who came from Morton Grove and surrounding towns, each received a goody bag with Valentine's Day-themed items including pencils, bracelets, candy and temporary tattoos.
'It's a longstanding event so people know it's a lot of fun,' she said.
Activities included games such as limbo and freeze. There was also a contest to guess how many Starburst candies were in a jar. Baumgartner said Morton Grove resident Mattie Speilburg, 8, won the candy-filled jar after guessing 63, which was closest to the actual number of 62.
Valentine's was celebrated for more than a day in Morton Grove.
Baumgartner said a new event was the holiday-themed Paint N Snack on Feb. 8 at Prairie View Community Center to celebrate Galentine's Day with friends. There, Lena Roy led nine attendees in painting a tree with red and pink flowers. Snacks included cheese and crackers, fruit and brownies.
'We thought a Paint N Snack would be fun so we decided to do it once a month,' said Baumgartner, who explained that the inaugural session was in January and the next one is on March 15.
The annual Valentine Cake Decorating returned Feb. 13 at Prairie View Community Center.
Participants received six mini heart-shaped cakes. The approximately 18 attendees were mostly Morton Grove residents between the ages of 3 and 6 accompanied by their parents.
'I brought in icing, some tips to be able to make designs in the icing, colored sprinkles, Sweethearts candies with the words on them, M&M's and a bunch of different stuff to decorate with,' said Baumgartner.

Dodgers host Kobe Bryant bobblehead night to honor Lakers legend

The Los Angeles Dodgers honored Kobe Bryant on Friday with a special bobblehead giveaway at their stadium. The date, Aug. 8, was chosen to recognize the No. 8 jersey Bryant wore during the first half of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Bryant's wife, Vanessa, and their daughters, Natalia, 22, Bianka, 8 and Capri, 6, attended the event ahead of the team's game at Dodgers Stadium against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers and Vanessa collaborated on an Instagram post on Aug. 8 showing pictures of Bryant's daughters partaking in some pre-game activities. The carousel was accompanies by the caption, "Mamba forever. Thank you, Vanessa, Natalia, Bianka and Capri for helping us celebrate Kobe Bryant Bobblehead Night. 💙." Bianka threw the ceremonial first pitch to Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, while Capri delivered the traditional opening line, telling the crowd, 'It's time for Dodgers baseball!' The bobblehead, unveiled by the team earlier this summer, depicts Bryant wearing his No. 24 Lakers jersey and Dodgers-themed Nike Kobe 6 Protro sneakers while holding a baseball bat. The collectible was available exclusively to fans attending the Aug. 8 game, with the first 40,000 ticketed guests receiving one upon entry. Bryant, a five-time NBA champion and 18-time All-Star, died in January 2020 in a helicopter crash that also claimed the life of his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others.

Disney, Lucasfilm settle lawsuit with Gina Carano over 'Mandalorian' firing

"The Mandalorian" actress Gina Carano, who took legal action against Disney and Lucasfilm following her 2021 firing, has reached an agreement with her former studio bosses. Carano, who starred as bounty hunter Cara Dune in the Star Wars-themed Disney+ series, revealed in an Aug. 7 X post that she reached a deal with The Walt Disney Company and production company Lucasfilm in her lawsuit against the companies over her termination from the sci-fi show. Disney fired Carano, 43, for "abhorrent and unacceptable" language after the actress drew online controversy for sharing social media posts that mocked transgender rights, criticized COVID-19 vaccine mandates and mask wearers, questioned the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, and likened the treatment of conservatives to Jews in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. Carano filed a lawsuit in February 2024, claiming she was fired because she went against an "online bully mob who demanded her compliance with their extreme progressive ideology," The Associated Press and The Hollywood Reporter reported at the time. Carano filed a joint motion with Disney and Lucasfilm on Aug. 7 to dismiss her lawsuit with prejudice, according to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and obtained by USA TODAY. Carano, who now won't be able to refile the case, called the legal resolution "the best outcome for all parties involved," adding, "I hope this brings some healing to the force." Carano concluded: "I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me. ♥️" USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company for comment. 'Disney had enough': Disney fires back at Gina Carano over 'Mandalorian' firing lawsuit Lucasfilm teases Gina Carano collaborations in 'near future' after resolving lawsuit In response to Carano's lawsuit, Disney filed a motion to dismiss the wrongful termination complaint in California court in April 2024, according to court records reviewed by USA TODAY at the time. The company claimed in its motion that it "has a constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano's speech, such that the First Amendment provides a complete defense to Carano's claims." "As Carano's own fame rose with her character's, Carano began engaging with show fans and the public in a manner that, in Disney's view, came to distract from and undermine Disney's own expressive efforts," the company added. Lucasfilm addressed its settlement with Carano and the future of their professional relationship with the controversial actress in an Aug. 7 statement to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. "Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, costars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect," a Lucasfilm spokesperson told the outlets. "With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future." Contributing: Naledi Ushe, USA TODAY
