The Cleveland Browns won't start Shedeur Sanders — But he might be the future they can't overlook

Photo byAmid a crowded quarterback room and sky-high expectations, rookie Shedeur Sanders is navigating his first NFL offseason with measured patience — and the Cleveland Browns are better for it.
The 2025 fifth-round pick may be generating buzz from fans and media alike, but he's not yet getting first-team reps, and that's by design. With OTAs and minicamp sessions underway in Berea, Ohio, Sanders has quietly settled into a developmental role. And while his name may attract the spotlight, coaches and analysts alike are urging patience over projection. The long game, it seems, is what matters most right now.

Shedeur Sanders is buried on the Browns' depth chart, but the rookie QB's development could reshape Cleveland's future
As of mid-June 2025,
Shedeur Sanders
remains a work in progress at Brown's minicamp — and that's entirely expected. The 21-year-old rookie is part of a four-man quarterback competition that includes veteran Joe Flacco and others vying for the depth chart, but Sanders is operating mostly with third- and fourth-string units.
Speaking on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, former Browns head coach Eric Mangini broke down what he's seen so far and where the rookie currently stands.

'All of his reps have been with the backend guys,' Mangini said. 'He hasn't gotten any reps with the ones. As soon as he gets in with the ones, then the hype train is going to roll even further.'

That insight came during Mangini's appearance on The Herd earlier this week, where he also emphasized the importance of context when evaluating Sanders' numbers during these early practices. 'There's a lot of learning going on for him,' he added.
'To see the numbers, that's positive — but he's also working against the back end of the roster, so his numbers should be a little bit higher.'
In other words, Sanders is where he should be — developing quietly, absorbing the playbook, and learning from the veterans around him.
Why the Cleveland Browns are the perfect team to develop rookie QB Shedeur Sanders
While Cleveland went just 3–14 last season, the team is building for the long haul, and Sanders finds himself in a rare position for a young quarterback: he has time. Kevin Stefanski, a respected offensive mind, is overseeing his development, and Super Bowl-winning veteran Joe Flacco offers an invaluable locker-room presence.
There's no rush for Sanders to dazzle in June. What matters more is the foundation he's laying now — one rep, one meeting, one film session at a time.

'When the soul of sports...': Anand Mahindra moved by Keshav Maharaj's tears and words after South Africa's historic WTC win

When South African cricketer Keshav Maharaj , overwhelmed with emotion, stood at Lord's and spoke from the heart after his team's historic ICC World Test Championship (WTC) win, industrialist Mahindra shared a powerful one-liner that captured the world's sentiment: 'When the soul of sport finds a voice, this is what it sounds like…' Netizens echoed Anand Mahindra 's sentiment. Maharaj's teary post-match interview, laced with national pride and vulnerability, struck a chord across the cricketing world. Fans flooded social media with emotional tributes. One user wrote, 'From being called chokers to lifting the trophy—this is more than a win. It's the roar of a nation that's endured pain, pressure, and prejudice.' Another summed it up: 'You rose from heartbreaks, political tragedies, and near-misses… And today, you stand.' — anandmahindra (@anandmahindra) For Keshav Maharaj, South Africa's WTC win meant far more than just lifting a trophy. For him, the moment wasn't about personal milestones but about the symbolic weight of breaking a 27-year drought—one that generations had carried on their backs. Watch: R Ashwin fumes after comedy of errors leads to three missed run-outs

R Ashwin (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar) Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin found himself at the centre of another dramatic moment in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) on Saturday. Playing for Dindigul Dragons against Siechem Madurai Panthers, Ashwin 's one misjudged throw snowballed into a comedy of errors, resulting in not one but three missed run-out opportunities on the same delivery. The incident unfolded on the second-last ball of Madurai's innings. Batter Gurjapneet Singh drove the ball to extra cover where Ashwin was fielding. Spotting a run-out chance, Ashwin quickly fired a throw to the non-striker's end but it wasn't collected cleanly. Sensing the fumble, the batters grabbed another run. The chaos continued as another throw from short mid-wicket towards the striker's end also went astray, allowing the pair to scamper through for a third run. A final attempt from short third man missed its mark too, though this time the batters didn't push their luck further. Ashwin, visibly furious, stood motionless on the field, livid not only with himself but also with his teammates for the sloppy fielding that turned a straightforward single into three runs. 'Couldn't have dreamt it better': Aiden Markram This isn't Ashwin's first controversial moment this TNPL season. Earlier, in a match against I Dream Tiruppur Tamizhans, he had a heated exchange with the umpire after being given out lbw — a decision he felt was incorrect as the ball appeared to pitch outside leg. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? While the triple run-out fiasco had fans in splits online, it's clear Ashwin expects sharper cricket from his side. With the TNPL heating up, all eyes will be on the experienced campaigner to see how he channels his fiery passion in the games ahead.
