Three months after repair, two lanes of Butibori flyover remain closed
2
Nagpur: Nearly three months after the Butibori flyover was reopened to traffic following a major repair work, two of its six lanes continue to remain closed. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has barricaded the outermost lanes on either side of the structure, citing safety precautions.
However, the presence of an uneven joint where the repair work was carried out — combined with the prolonged closure of two lanes — has added to the concerns of motorists who use the flyover daily.
The flyover, built at a cost of Rs70 crore, was inaugurated in June 2021 to ease congestion at one of the most accident-prone junctions near Nagpur, which had recorded over 100 fatalities in the past. On December 24 last year, an overloaded over-dimensional vehicle (ODC) passed dangerously close to the edge of the flyover on the Nagpur-Wardha side, causing a part of one of its span to cave in.
Following the incident, NHAI closed the flyover for nearly five months, leading to heavy traffic jam on the road beneath. Experts from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) were roped in for a detailed structural review after which the repair work was carried out. The flyover was reopened in May this year, though with restrictions — two outermost lanes on either side remained barricaded.
A senior NHAI official said the flyover is safe despite the visible unevenness.

"The repair work was carried out after a report from experts at VNIT. It is completely safe, but the joint cannot return to its original place," the official said.
On closure of the two outermost lanes, the officer said it is a precautionary move. "We have approached VNIT, which will advise us on measures to stop heavy and over-dimensional vehicles from running on the edge of the flyover. Once VNIT suggests measures, we will start the work.
Later, light vehicles like cars and bikes will be allowed on the outermost lanes, but heavy vehicles will be strictly prohibited. We are expecting suggestions from VNIT next week," he said.
With only four of the six lanes in use, traffic congestion is common, especially during peak hours when trucks and passenger vehicles crowd the busy stretch. For many locals, the uneven joint at the repaired patch, along with the barricaded lanes, has raised doubts about the long-term durability of the flyover.

Govt implements Rs 3,000 FASTag pass for private vehicles
'Till 4:30 PM on the first day of the implementation, around 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and about 1.24 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas,' it added. The statement said the annual pass has received an overwhelming response from the national highway users. New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) State-owned NHAI has implemented the FASTag annual pass across the country from Friday to encourage the use of technology to enhance 'ease of living' for the citizens, according to an official statement. The statement said that providing a seamless and economical travel option to national highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000 for one year's validity or 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways and Expressways across the country. The annual pass is applicable to all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra App or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country, the statement said. The introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but also make journeys on the National Highways and Expressways more economical and seamless, it added. Austin Dillon creates NASCAR history, gets compared with legendary seven-time Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt
In his playoff-clinching victory at Richmond Raceway, Austin Dillon shared some NASCAR history on the venerable short track with the most famous driver of the No. 3 Chevrolet. Dale Earnhardt , the late seven-time Cup Series champion who amassed 76 victories in a Hall of Fame career, was the last Richard Childress Racing driver to win consecutive Cup races at the 0.75-mile oval in Richmond, Virginia, until Dillon did so Saturday night. The comparisons to Earnhardt and whispers of nepotism have dogged Dillon since the grandson of team owner Richard Childress was tabbed 11 years ago to drive the car number synonymous with a NASCAR icon. 'I could win 50 races, and they'll say my grandpa gave me the ride,' Dillon said with a smile. 'They're not wrong. He did. He did a great job putting me in it. Hopefully, I'm paying off on his investment at some point.' Richmond was only his sixth victory in 433 Cup starts, but Dillon said snapping a 37-race winless streak was 'one of the best because it was pretty much a butt kicking.' He led 107 of 400 laps, including the final 49, and cruised to a 2.471-second victory over Alex Bowman. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? HomeLane Get Quote Undo Dillon never led for more than 35 laps in any of his previous Cup wins. He won the 2018 Daytona 500 by leading only the last lap after knocking Aric Almirola aside two turns from the checkered flag. Last year's win at Richmond was his most controversial as Dillon wrecked Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin on the final lap, and NASCAR consequently revoked his playoff eligibility. Live Events There was no such drama Saturday night, when Dillon cleanly outdueled 2023 Cup champion Ryan Blaney just before his final pit stop. 'Anybody that says Austin doesn't deserve to be at this level, look at the 30 or 40 laps he raced side by side with Ryan Blaney,' said Richard Boswell, Dillon's crew chief. 'He raced door to door with a Cup champion. He beat him. Yeah, we need to run better. We need to be more consistent. But anybody that says he just can't do it is not looking at the facts.' The statistics are less convincing about Dillon's championship chances. Richmond was the first top-five finish in 25 races this year for Dillon, who is ranked 25th in the points standings and in the Cup playoffs for the sixth time in 12 seasons. He has won championships in the Truck and Xfinity series, with 22 victories across NASCAR's top three national circuits. 'Austin has earned his way,' Childress said. 'He won races in everything he's ever driven. They're going to give you criticism because he is my grandson. But we take it. It's just the way life is. You can't be burdened down by what people say. Do what you do and move forward. He's won his share.' 35-year-old Dillon said he cried last year during RCR's unsuccessful appeal of the NASCAR penalty that took him out of the playoffs, noting he legitimately had passed Hamlin and Logano before a late caution erased a comfortable lead. The Richmond repeat validated Dillon's belief that he belongs in NASCAR's premier series. Playoff outlook Dillon became the 14th winner to lock into the 16-driver playoff field heading into the August 23 regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway. There will be at least one winless driver to qualify for the playoffs, and Tyler Reddick and Bowman occupy the final two provisional spots in the points standings. Reddick was on track to clinch a playoff spot at Richmond after leading 41 laps, but he finished 34th after being caught in a crash that started when Daniel Suarez bumped Ty Gibbs. 'It's pretty much worst-case scenario for us,' Reddick said. 'We can thank Daniel Suarez for that. Went from a car that was one of the fastest on the track to one of the slowest.' Bubba Wallace, who is teamed with Reddick at the 23XI Racing squad co-owned by NBA great Michael Jordan, led a race-high 123 laps in his No. 23 Toyota but finished two laps down in 28th after losing a tire during a pit stop. Regular-season champion With a 12th-place finish, William Byron clinched the regular-season title as Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott finished last. Byron will be awarded 15 playoff points that will provide a good cushion to make the championship finale at Phoenix Raceway for the third consecutive season. FAQs Q1. What is age of Austin Dillon? A1. Austin Dillon is 35-year-old. Q2. Who is Dale Earnhardt? A2. Dale Earnhardt, the late seven-time Cup Series champion who amassed 76 victories in a Hall of Fame career.
