ICE says 'workplace inspections' conducted at 100 DC restaurants

Yahoo08-05-2025
The Brief
ICE has been conducting what they call "workplace inspections" at dozens of D.C. restaurants.
They told FOX 5 their agents went to 100 restaurants on Wednesday, asking for employee verification forms.
Restaurants have three days to provide the forms. No arrests have resulted from these inspections.
WASHINGTON - Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents visited 100 restaurants and businesses in D.C. on Wednesday, conducting what they're calling "workplace inspections."
While no arrests were made, it has put workers and businesses on edge as they wonder what the end goal is.
What we know
Federal agents have served dozens of inspection notices to restaurants and businesses in D.C. so far. No one has been detained as a result, leaving many questioning why ICE is coming to these businesses.
FOX 5 was sent photos of federal agents conducting these enforcements in parts of the District on Wednesday. They're being done by Homeland Security investigations, which is a part of ICE.
Federal officials are saying these are not raids.

Local perspective
Agents were at Chef Geoff's restaurant in Northwest D.C. on Tuesday. FOX 5 was told the DHS agents were polite and took about 10 minutes, asking for I-9 employment verification forms.
These I-9 form verifications are standard but typically done in a much different manner with notice and usually through the mail.
Chef Geoff's says that paperwork is managed at a different location so they'll be sent next week.
The same thing happened at nearly a dozen other upscale and popular D.C. restaurants that we are aware of, including Millie's in Spring Valley. Surveillance video showed agents inside Tuesday afternoon.
Another Northeast D.C. restaurant, Cynthia, posted on social media Wednesday saying they were also visited by agents. They, too, said the agents were polite, and no arrests were made.
Still that hasn't assuaged their fear.

What they're saying
"From what we've heard, they've come in delivered the letter and they've left so there hasn't been any incidents where they're arresting people in the restaurants at this time so when they say they're doing workplace enforcement that is correct, but the way they're doing it is done in a way to intimidate both the business owners and the community," said Abel Nunez, executive director with the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN).
These types of workplace inspections are happening throughout the country by ICE right now. Advocacy groups like CARECEN have been reminding workers and employers about their rights.
"The moment we told them about the operations people were afraid, we've seen less traffic, less delivery drivers on the road, some restaurants saying they couldn't open because they didn't have enough personnel," Nunez said.
What's next
No one has been detained during these workplace inspections and businesses have three business days to provide those employment verification forms.

House Democrat: ‘Pretty clear' Trump ‘wants his own domestic police force'

Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) said Tuesday it is 'pretty clear' President Trump 'wants his own domestic police force' after the president took control of the District of Columbia's Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). 'Look, this president is trampling on basic freedoms of the American people to a degree we — I don't think we've ever seen,' Smith said on CNN. 'You see that with what the ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] agents are doing, in terms of picking people up off the streets with no evidence, no due process, locking people up.' 'This is happening all across the country,' the Evergreen State Democrat added. 'Look, it's pretty clear the president wants his own domestic police force, and step by step, he's trying to create it, and we should be deeply alarmed by that, regardless of how you feel about crime in Washington, D.C., or any other city.' Trump announced Monday he was taking federal control of D.C.'s police department and deploying the National Guard in the city in an attempt to fight crime. 'Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people, and we're not going to let it happen anymore. We're not going to take it,' the president said. Trump took over the MPD via the District of Columbia's Home Rule Act's Section 740. Congress passed the act in the 1970s to give D.C. control over its local affairs. The president's recent moves in the District have drawn harsh blowback from Democrats, with Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), whose state borders the nation's capital, saying Monday in a thread on the social platform X that 'Trump's raw authoritarian power grab in DC is part of a growing national crisis.' 'He's playing dictator in our nation's capital as a dress rehearsal as he pushes democracy to the brink. This assault on freedom is exactly why we've fought for DC statehood & to give DC control of its National Guard,' Van Hollen added. 'And by the way, Trump couldn't care less about safety in DC or the people of DC. If he did, he wouldn't have blocked DC from spending $1 billion of its OWN money to fund its OWN police department, schools and more,' he continued. When reached for comment, the White House pushed back against Van Hollen's comments by saying, 'When Chris Van Hollen isn't traveling abroad to sip margaritas with criminal illegal aliens, he's complaining about the President's bold efforts to stop violent crime in our nation's capital.' 'How many different ways can this guy say it? He will always side with criminals over law abiding Americans,' White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson added. Updated at 7:45 p.m. EDT. 6-year-old girl detained by ICE along with mom, brother in NYC

Three family members, including a 6-year-old girl, were detained by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after what was supposed to be a routine immigration hearing in Lower Manhattan. Efforts are underway to try to get the family out of ICE custody. Mariposa Benitez, a founder of the grassroots organization Mi Tlalli, says on Tuesday, ICE agents detained a woman named Martha, her daughter Dayra and her 19-year-old son Manuel at 26 Federal Plaza. "They came together as a family escaping the violence that they have experienced in Ecuador," Benitez said. Manuel just graduated from high school in June, and Dayra is believed to be the young student detained by ICE in New York City. She is at least the fourth city public school student to be detained by ICE this year. Benitez says Martha and Dayra are now at an ICE detention center in Dilley, Texas, and Manuel was transferred to the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. "I'm a licensed clinical social worker, and the impact of family separation on their mental health is something that they will not be able to recover from in many years to come," Benitez said. The Department of Homeland Security released a statement saying, in part, that Martha and her children entered the U.S. illegally in December 2022. "They have all received final orders of removal from an immigration judge," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. Another of Martha's sons, who lives in Queens and did not want to share his name, said he felt destroyed when he found out his mom, his sister and his brother were detained. In Spanish, he told CBS News New York his mom admitted she was afraid of going to court, and he feels helpless. He said his mother's hugs brought him joy and peace, and his sister inherited that warmth and reassurance. Martha's boyfriend said he spoke with her recently, and she told him she's afraid of being deported and of the gangs and danger back in Ecuador. Martha's son said he feels helpless and the most painful part is not knowing when he'll be reunited with the rest of his family again. Martha's loved ones are calling for the family's reunion and release.

ICE Arrests Mexican National After He Crashes Into Government Vehicles, Injures Officer

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested a Mexican national and illegal immigrant after he allegedly crashed into two government vehicles while attempting to flee from a traffic stop in his vehicle. A federal officer was injured in the crash, according to authorities. The crash happened on Aug. 11, during a joint operation between ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies in San Diego, when they attempted a traffic stop. The twice-deported man, with a prior conviction for driving under the influence, tried to evade the stop, and in doing so, collided with vehicles and caused the injury.
