Neighbours legend Ian Smith admits 'I was supposed to die in March' in candid health update

The Harold Bishop icon has revealed how experimental treatment has changed his life after being diagnosed with a rare, aggressive type of cancer
Ian Smith, best known for his iconic role in Neighbours as Harold Bishop, has opened up about his ongoing battle with cancer and how his health is even surprising for the doctors. The 86 year old appeared on Australian news show This Morning Show earlier this week, giving fans an optimistic update on his health condition, after his diagnosis left him little hope.
"I have got cancer. I know that because doctors tell me I have. But apart from that... No pain. I was supposed to die in March," Smith revealed. "I am having the easiest ride, seriously."

In December last year, the Australian actor was diagnosed with pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, a rare and aggressive lung cancer, the Mirror reports.

At first the doctors described his condition as "non-fixable" and his prognosis was unsettling. He was then placed on an experimental treatment plan, which he jokingly described as becoming a "guinea pig", and since then he has defied expectations.
"I want to go forever," he said, smiling. "I don't want to play Harold anymore, but I don't want to stop acting."
Though the diagnosis was serious, Ian says the treatment has brought with it an unexpected twist. He jokingly said: "I've possibly never felt better. Everyone looks at me and says, 'Look at your hair,'" he laughed and continued: "They are all jealous I've got so much hair. I went through the treatment, started to lose my hair and went totally bald. I then went onto the immunotherapy and got a head full of hair... not just hair, but curly hair."
He's realistic but hopeful, expressing that he now looks forward to "a year, maybe two" more of life than what the doctors had initially told him.

Despite stepping away from Neighbours and being one of longest-serving characters, Ian insists he is not stepping away from the career that shaped his life. 'I'm not cured,' he admitted. 'But I'm here. And I feel fine.'
His final appearance on the beloved Aussie soap was extremely emotional. In a touching final scene, Harold announced he was moving to Port Douglas, Queensland, bringing longtime viewers to tears. Reflecting on those final moments, Smith said being surrounded by his fellow cast mates made the moment even more special.
He expressed: "I love them all dearly. They're like family."

Ian began portraying Harold on the show back in 1987, and quickly became one of the show's most loved characters, known for his warmth, resilience and memorable reappearances after dramatic exits.
Now, in real life, Ian is living a storyline that soap writers could never dream up.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, he opened up about how far he has come since the doctors gave him a few months to live. He said: "I've got cancer, yes, I'm going to die soon but I seem to be defying the odds, which is good."
At the start of this year, Ian told TV Week that his tumour had begun to shrink after three rounds of treatment including immunotherapy and chemotherapy. It's this that continues to fuel his determination to live his life.

Victoria Beckham 'disgusted' by Brooklyn's silence and tarnishing big moment

Victoria Beckham is said to be both furious and heartbroken by her son Brooklyn's deafening silence after it was announced that his dad David will finally be honoured with a knighthood Sir David Beckham has reached many amazing achievements throughout his longstanding career in sport and showbiz – all of which are now likely to be topped by the long-awaited announcement that he is to be knighted. The 50-year-old star, who is being recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List for his services to Sport and Charity, has finally secured his long awaited knighthood. Speaking out about the incredible recognition, Sir David said he was "humbled" in a statement shared with the Mirror. ‌ He said: "I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family." ‌ Sadly for the new Sir and Lady Beckham, the star's huge achievement has been tainted as the couple are currently embroiled in a fallout with their eldest son Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, 26, and his wife Nicola Peltz Beckham, 30. And it appears that feud is still ongoing as Brooklyn appears to have snubbed his dad's huge achievement on his social media pages as well as failing to celebrate him on Father's Day. David is set to be honoured at Buckingham Palace later this year, but the special day that he has dreamed of for so many years will be tinged with sadness as Brooklyn and his wife Nicola are not set to attend, according to reports. While David will be supported by his wife Victoria, 51, sons Romeo, 22, and Cruz, 20, and daughter Harper, 13, Brooklyn is likely to skip his dad's biggest career milestone yet. "Sadly there's no question of Brooklyn being involved. The whole family is disgusted with him. It's left a very dark cloud over everyone at the worst possible time. Barring some sort of miracle, there's no way that Brooklyn is going to show up," a source told Heat Magazine. And while all the rest of his children honoured and celebrated his incredible achievement on social media, Brooklyn remained silent while his dad's dreams of a knighthood finally came true. Brooklyn's behaviour has reportedly rubbed his mum Victoria up the wrong way and she has been left 'furious' by his actions - or lack thereof. ‌ "The whole family is devastated by the current situation. The tension had been there for a while but no-one thought in a million years that it would turn this toxic. Victoria can't fathom why Brooklyn hasn't been in touch to apologise. She's furious with him, but also heartbroken," the insider added. While Brooklyn may have remained silent, the same can't be said for Victoria who has sang her praises and celebrated her husband to no end after the incredible news of his knighthood. Victoria posted a sweet snap of her kissing a smiling David on the cheek as she wrote in the caption: "You've always been my knight in shining armour, but now it's official. Sir @davidbeckham!!! What an honour, I couldn't be prouder of you. ‌ "Your dedication to the things that matter most - your country, your work, your passion, and most of all, your family - has never wavered. The way you've touched so many lives over the years with kindness and humility speaks volumes about the man you are and continues to inspire us everyday. But above all else, I'm so, so proud to call you mine.I love you so much xxxx". In a statement to the Mirror, David himself said: "Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true. ‌ "Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. "I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family."

A local Melbourne barista just made history at the 2025 Australia Barista Championship

If you haven't had your second coffee of the day yet, here's a triple shot of good news to put a spring in your step. For the third year in a row, local Melbourne barista Jack Simpson from Axil Coffee Roasters has just been crowned the Australian Barista Champion at the nation's fiercest espresso-fuelled competition: the ASCA (Australian Specialty Coffee Association) National Coffee Championships. With talent like this working in our cafés, it's no wonder Melbourne is consistently ranked among the world's best cities for coffee. The final verdict was handed down after 5pm on Sunday, June 15, after the judges spent an entire day pondering expertly prepared brews from Australia's top six competitors. Every year, each entrant has only 15 minutes to impress the judges through creating their very best milk-based coffee, espresso, and signature drink. The latter aspect of the challenge, in particular, is a chance for the baristas to showcase their creativity. This year, Jack rose to the occasion with a coffee from Colombian specialty producer Jonathan Gasca, leveraging its natural notes of pineapple, raspberry kombucha, cola, and peach, as well as honey vinegar, cascara and passionfruit husk in order to highlight the utility of so-called 'waste' products. Jack tells Time Out that while Melbourne's coffee culture is thriving, he believes specialty coffee is booming everywhere around the world right now. "I've noticed the emerging coffee scene in Montréal, Paris and Spain recently," he shares, crediting the dedicated producers for the growing love. " The work they put in to get specialty coffee to taste as good as it does is amazing! It's their livelihood and the risks they have to take to make it work inspires me daily." Not only is it the third win for this young barista (who simultaneously serves as Axil's head of innovation), it's also the fourth time a barista from Axil has carried the Aussie torch on the global stage. In 2022, Anthony Douglas won the Australia Barista Championship before going on to win first place in the World Barista Championship. Jack will now go on to represent Australia at the 2025 World Barista Championship in Milan, Italy, in October. He came runner-up in the 2024 global championship, missing out on the title by just one point! So let's stand behind our nation's homegrown bean genius as he competes with some the world's brightest and most brew-obsessed. Learn more about the ASCA here.
