Vance criticizes Germany's free speech laws in remarks to conservatives
German law sets restrictions on free speech, including the long-standing ban on Holocaust denial and any glorification of the country's Nazi past.
The limits are an effort to curb extremism and incitement, and have led to authorities policing the internet for hate speech and arresting the people allegedly posting, and reposting, such comments.
'There are thousands upon thousands of American troops in Germany today. Do you think that the American taxpayer is going to stand for that, if you get thrown in jail in Germany for posting a mean tweet? Of course they're not,' Vance told activists gathered Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
The U.S. military is stationed throughout Germany, according to U.S. European Command, including at Ramstein Air Base.
Vance's remarks followed his speech earlier this month at the Munich Security Conference, where he lectured European leaders about the state of democracy and free speech across the continent. His comments were met with rebukes from multiple European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
'Obviously we're going to continue to have important alliances with Europe,' Vance told CPAC moderator Mercedes Schlapp. 'But I really do think the strength of those alliances is doing to depend on whether we take our societies in the right direction.'
Vance then claimed that 'Germany's entire defense is subsidized by the American taxpayers.'

Interior raises cap on state payouts from Gulf energy leases
Gulf states will get a new boost in shared revenue from offshore oil and gas leases, the Department of the Interior announced Tuesday. The Trump administration has raised the cap on how much states can receive from energy leases on the Gulf of Mexico's Outer Continental Shelf from $500 million to $650 million annually. The funds are given to coastal states participating in offshore energy — Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. 'The Trump administration is committed to unleashing American energy, reducing reliance on foreign sources and strengthening coastal communities,' Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in a news release. 'This increase in revenue sharing rewards the states that power our economy and ensures they have the resources to build resilient infrastructure, protect their coastlines and grow local jobs.' Advertisement The cap increases were required under President Donald Trump's megalaw, which also mandated new oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf, which the Trump administration renamed the Gulf of America.

Gavin Newsom Just Hilariously Mocked Donald Trump's Posting Style With One Simple Tweet
Gavin Newsom has been sparring with Texas Governor Greg Abbott over redistricting for the last few weeks. In case you didn't know, the short of it is: Texas is threatening to eliminate five Democratic seats by redistricting, which would give Republicans a huge advantage in the 2026 midterms. In response, Governor Newsom has threatened to counter with his own redistricting map that would eliminate Republican seats in California. Newsom is expected to release a new congressional map of his own next week and has already taken steps to get it approved in a public referendum this November. "You are playing with fire, risking the destabilization of our democracy, while knowing that California can neutralize any gains you hope to make," he said. "This attempt to rig congressional maps to hold onto power before a single vote is cast in the 2026 election is an affront to American democracy." "If you will not stand down, I will be forced to lead an effort to redraw the maps in California to offset the rigging of maps in red states. But if the other states call off their redistricting efforts, we will happily do the same. And American democracy will be better for it." Newsom's press office also posted a tweet that may resonate better with President Trump. "DONALD TRUMP HAS 24 HOURS LEFT TO RESPOND TO GOVERNOR NEWSOM'S LETTER. IF HE DOES NOT STAND DOWN, THERE WILL BE A VERY IMPORTANT PRESS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK WITH A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER." In case you aren't aware, Trump has been ending MANY of his Truth Social rants with "THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER." And you obviously know he's a fan of an ALL CAPS rant: Needless to say, his press office kind of nailed it. As this person said, "Gavin newsom trying to be a liberal trump is at least very entertaining."

Zelensky refuses to cede Donbas, says doing so would give Putin ‘springboard' for future offensives
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed on Tuesday not to give eastern Ukrainian land to Russia, saying that abandoning the Donbas region would open the door for Russian President Vladimir Putin to 'start a third war' in Ukraine. Zelensky's warning comes ahead of Putin's meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska on Friday, where the Russian president is expected to demand Ukrainian land as part of a peace deal. While there is confusion over Putin's reported conditions for a ceasefire, most versions stress that the Russian president will demand that Ukrainian forces withdraw from all parts of Ukraine's Donbas, which includes parts of the Donetsk region it still holds. 'For the Russians, Donbas is a springboard for a future new offensive. If we leave Donbas of our own accord or under pressure, we will start a third war,' Zelensky said in a meeting with journalists. Russia illegally annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, and went on to launch its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. 'I am not going to surrender my country because I have no right to do so,' he added. 'If we leave Donbas today, our fortifications, our terrain, the heights we control, we will clearly open a bridgehead for the preparation of a Russian offensive.' Zelensky and Ukrainian military officials have warned that Russia is building up troops for a new offensive, ready to launch by September. 'I haven't heard anything — not a single proposal that would guarantee that a new war won't start tomorrow and that Putin won't try to occupy at least Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv,' the Ukrainian president told reporters. 'The exchange of territories is a very complex issue that cannot be separated from security guarantees for Ukraine, for our sovereign state and our people,' Zelensky added, noting that the European Union's involvement in peace talks is also crucial because 'no one except Europe is giving us security guarantees.' A conversation between the US, Ukraine and 'all of Europe' will take place on Wednesday, according to the Ukrainian president. Trump has signaled Zelensky would not participate in Friday's summit, though the US president previewed his plans to phone Kyiv immediately after the meeting, along with other European leaders, to brief them. Trump said his goal is ultimately to get Putin and Zelensky in the same room to hash out their differences, and surmised only they would be able to find a way to end the war with some 'land swapping' between them. 'I'm not going to make a deal,' Trump said. 'It's not up to me to make a deal. I think a deal should be made for both.' Zelensky also gave further details on Tuesday about the diplomatic talks that have been taking place behind the scenes, as well as his take on the outcome of US special envoy Steve Witkoff's meeting with Putin. 'Witkoff said that there should be territorial concessions on both sides. That's how it sounded. And that Putin probably wants us to leave Donbas. So it didn't sound like America wants us to leave,' Zelensky said. 'I do not believe that Putin's proposal is Trump's proposal. I believe that Trump represents the United States of America. He acts as a mediator, he is in the middle – not on Russia's side.' CNN's Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.
