Transport secretary Heidi Alexander said: 'This summer, we're making owning an electric car cheaper, easier and a reality for thousands more people across the UK.' To qualify for the grant, car manufacturers' models must meet science-backed emission-footprint criteria, while the individual model lines must be priced under £37,000 in entry-level trim. Which discount a model receives – either £1500 or £3750 – is determined by its environmental impact: how much CO2 is emitted in an EV's production and assembly, along with the emissions footprint of its battery manufacture. Threshold levels have yet to be made public. While any manufacturer can apply for their car to be included in the scheme, it's thought that, due to this criteria, cars produced in Asian countries will not be eligible for the ECG.

The price of five more electric cars has been cut as the government widens a scheme to encourage people to switch. It 22 vehicles are now eligible for the electric car grant, with prices reduced by up to £1,500. Models from Volkswagen, Peugeot and Cupra have been added to the list. It is part of a £650 million investment by ministers to get people to move away from petrol or diesel cars. The new cars subject to the £1,500 discount are the Cupra Born, Volkswagen ID.3, Peugeot e-208, Peugeot e-2008 and Peugeot e-Rifter. The cost represents a 4 per cent discount on the Cupra. The carmaker's website is advertising the car for £37,460. The Volkswagen is being advertised for £30,860, and the Peugeot models range from £20,245 to about £35,000. The number of electric cars registered in the first quarter of 2025 was 43 per cent higher than the same period last year, according to figures published this week. DVLA data showed more than 120,000 zero-emissions cars were registered between January and March this year. Electric cars made up a fifth of registrations, up by 3 per cent compared with the year before. The Government said it is also investing in electric car charging infrastructure in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions. However the attempts to move people away from petrol and diesel has been criticised by some who claim electric cars are also damaging to the environment because of the precious metals that need to be mined for batteries. The announcement comes a week after the Government last broadened the initiative. Earlier in August it added 13 models, including cars produced by Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall. At the time, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the Government was 'delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric'. She added: 'This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people's pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward.'

It's been just over a month since the UK Government announced the launch of a new Electric Car Grant (ECG) that aims to make EVs more affordable for more people by removing up to £3,750 off the price of select zero-emissions cars. However, as you probably know (and may have guessed) not every electric car on sale is eligible for a Government-funded price cut. We're not just talking about incredibly opulent EVs such as the Rolls-Royce Spectre or Lotus Evija. There are complex criteria that car manufacturers and their models have to meet in order to receive the ECG. Firstly, only cars starting from less than £37,000 are eligible to receive the Government's subsidy. Then there are two distinct bands. Band 1 is for the most sustainably produced EVs, and they qualify for the full £3,750 discount. Those considered to meet a lesser standard fall into Band 2 and receive £1,500 off. Leading the pack has to be the Renault 5. For a small electric car, it feels very sophisticated and well-rounded, thanks to its impressive handling abilities, refinement and Google-powered technology. The retro looks and charm sprinkled throughout are the cherry on top. What more could you want? As well as a bigger boot and more rear-seat space, the R4 also offers one-pedal driving – something its sibling doesn't right now – which is great for driving around town. Another Auto Express award winner, the Citroen e-C3, focuses on comfort, efficiency, affordability and just being a very easy car to live with. Alternatively, if you want something more practical, there's the Citroen e-C3 Aircross which is available for just £1,000 extra, has a bigger boot and offers beefier SUV design. For family buyers, our recommendations are the Renault Scenic and Nissan Ariya, which are actually based on the same platform but have very different styles and technology onboard. Both provide plenty of space and range though. While there are lots of excellent, hugely capable electric cars available with the EV grant, we'd recommend buyers avoid the Peugeot E-208 and E-2008, as well as the Vauxhall Mokka. All three are certainly stylish EVs, but they're all several years old at this point, yet considerably more expensive than their rivals. For instance, the entry-level E-208 costs about the same as the top-of-the-range version of the Renault 5, yet offers less range and features rather dated technology. The Vauxhall Mokka and Peugeot E-2008 seem even more overpriced when you consider they start from £31k and £33k respectively, after the EV grant has been applied. That's about the same price as the Citroen e-C5 Aircross – a much newer, full-size family SUV with more range – and several thousand pounds more than their key rival, the Renault 4.
