IMD forecasts drop in rainfall activity across Maharashtra from Tuesday, with yellow alerts till Wednesday
IMD said a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh has weakened into a regular low-pressure system, covering northwest Madhya Pradesh and parts of eastern Rajasthan, and is expected to continue weakening in the coming days. "This weather system, which originally developed over the Bay of Bengal, has been one of the primary drivers of rainfall activity in Maharashtra over the past few days," an IMD official said.
The northward shift of the monsoon trough towards the Himalayan foothills effectively moves the zone of maximum rainfall activity away from peninsular India, including Maharashtra. When the trough repositions itself closer to the mountains, it draws moisture and rainfall activity towards northern regions, leaving central and western states like Maharashtra with reduced precipitation.

"The reduction in rainfall over Maharashtra has already been noticed from Sunday, the further reduction will happen after two days," the official added.

Despite the overall declining trend, several areas in Maharashtra continued to receive heavy rainfall in the 24-hour period ending Monday morning, with Tamhini and Shirgaon recording 175mm each, followed by Davdi (168mm). In Pune district, Bhor recorded the highest rainfall at 77.5mm, followed by Nimgiri (73mm). The ghat sections continued to bear the brunt of the monsoon activity, with Girivan receiving 49.5mm and Kurvande recording 42.5mm during the same period.
Areas in Pune witnessed considerably lighter rainfall. Lavale recorded 8.5mm, while Koregaon Park and Shivajinagar received 8mm and 6mm respectively. Chinchwad (4.5mm), Talegaon (4.5mm), and Hadapsar (2mm) reported minimal precipitation.
According to the latest IMD forecast, Maharashtra will have no rain-related warnings from Thursday. For Pune district specifically, the ghat areas have been placed under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall till Wednesday, while the city is expected to receive only light rain.
After Wednesday, Pune city has been forecast to experience very light to light rain with no warnings issued for the ghat regions, indicating a substantial improvement in weather conditions.

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Delhi's monthly rainfall for July has surpassed the average for the month, data showed. So far this month, the city has recorded 220.2 mm of rainfall, exceeding the normal mark of 209.7 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). From June 1 till now, Delhi has received 322.2 mm of rainfall, higher than the average seasonal figure of 270.1 mm. Monsoon hit the city late June. Between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm on Tuesday, the city recorded 68.1 mm of rainfall at its primary weather station in Safdarjung. Other stations reported varying amounts — the Ridge recorded 129.5 mm, Lodhi Road 71.8 mm, Pragati Maidan 45.5 mm, and Pusa 37.5 mm — as per data from the Regional Meteorological Centre. The weather department has forecast that the rain spell is likely to continue over the next seven days, or until at least August 3. With a cloudy sky covering the city, the day saw intermittent rainfall. The maximum temperature in Delhi dropped to 29.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday 5.8 notches below the season's average, while the minimum temperature settled at 26.8 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD. The air quality was in the 'satisfactory' category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 72 at 4 pm, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'. Punjab dams under control, no flood threat: Minister Goyal
Chandigarh: Punjab water resources minister Barinder Kumar Goyal said on Tuesday that water levels in all three major dams are well within permissible limits, mitigating any immediate flood threat. Following a review meeting of the department, Goyal stated that the state govt was prepared to handle any flood-like situation during the monsoon season. "The water levels in the three dams are within permissible levels and there is no fear of any floods in the state," Goyal said. He added that the state govt significantly enhanced its preparedness measures, including, for the first time, procuring 10,300 jumbo bags specifically to address potential breaches. Providing an update on the dam levels, Goyal informed that Bhakra Dam stands at 1,618.38 feet, which is below its capacity of 1,680 feet (which can extend up to 1685 feet). Similarly, Pong Dam's current level is 1,346.15 feet, which is 30.78 feet below its maximum capacity. Ranjit Sagar Dam's present level is 1664.72 feet, 54 feet below its full capacity. Teams have been deployed to monitor 94 points previously identified as vulnerable to breaches during past floods. Additionally, 8.76 lakh sandbags have been pre-positioned across 19 districts, with their availability mapped on a Geographic Information System (GIS) for rapid deployment in emergencies. The minister said for the first time 10,300 jumbo bags had been procured for breach management, adding that 1,044 check dams had also been constructed to control water flow. He informed that over 4,766 kilometres of drains and choes had been desilted using departmental machinery. He stated that projects for strengthening embankments had been undertaken under the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF).
