Hawaii launches pilot project to harness hydrogen energy

Yahoo21-05-2025
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaii Gas is partnering with Canadian energy tech company Ayrton Energy on a new pilot project aimed at advancing hydrogen as a clean fuel for the islands.
Earthquake off Kau Coast bears no tsunami threat
The project is set to launch in early 2026 and will test Ayrton's proprietary liquid organic hydrogen carrier (e-LOHC™) technology, a system designed to store and transport hydrogen safely and efficiently at room temperature.
The goal is to explore whether this new method could make hydrogen a more practical and scalable energy solution for Hawaii.'Hydrogen has long been recognized as a zero-carbon fuel, but storing and transporting it has been a major hurdle,' said Nicolas Rodier, executive director of clean energy and innovation at Hawaii Gas. 'This pilot project with Ayrton Energy will help us bring scalable hydrogen projects to life and continue decarbonizing our fuel supply in a safe and cost-effective way.'
'Hydrogen's potential as a global energy solution depends on overcoming critical storage and transportation challenges,' said Natasha Kostenuk, CEO of Calgary-based Ayrton Energy. 'This project will show how our technology can make hydrogen accessible where it's needed most.'
Hawaii Gas already blends up to 15% hydrogen into its synthetic natural gas on Oahu which is more than any other utility in the United States.
In 2024, the company announced plans to build the state's first green hydrogen facility in partnership with Eurus Energy America, as part of its broader push toward renewable energy.

Southern Energy Corp. Announces Second Quarter 2025 Financial and Operating Results and Information Regarding the Annual Meeting of Shareholders

CALGARY, AB / / August 19, 2025 / Southern Energy Corp. ("Southern" or the "Company") (TSXV:SOU)(AIM:SOUC), an established producer with natural gas and light oil assets in Mississippi, announces its second quarter financial and operating results for the three and six months ended June 30, 2025. Selected financial and operational information is outlined below and should be read in conjunction with the Company's unaudited consolidated financial statements and related management's discussion and analysis (the "MD&A") for the three and six months ended June 30, 2025, which are available on the Company's website at and have been filed under the Company's profile on SEDAR+ at All figures referred to in this news release are denominated in U.S. dollars, unless otherwise noted. SECOND QUARTER 2025 HIGHLIGHTS Petroleum and natural gas sales of $4.0 million during Q2 2025, an increase of 3% from the same period in 2024, largely due to the 61% increase in Q2 2025 natural gas pricing over Q2 2024 Average production of 11,295[1] Mcfe/d (1,883 boe/d) (96% natural gas) during Q2 2025, a decrease of 27% from the same period in 2024 In June 2025, Southern successfully completed the second of its four high quality drilled uncompleted horizontal wells ("DUCs") from the Q1 2023 drilling program - the GH Lower Selma Chalk ("LSC") 13-13 #2 wellbore. The operation was completed safely and under budget Average realized natural gas and oil prices for Q2 2025 of $3.63/Mcf and $62.60/bbl, compared to $2.26/Mcf and $80.06/bbl in Q2 2024. Southern achieved an average premium of $0.19/Mcf (approximately 6%) above the NYMEX HH benchmark in Q2 2025 Generated $0.6 million of Adjusted Funds Flow from Operations[2] in Q2 2025 ($0.00 per share basic and diluted) Net loss of $0.4 million ($0.00 per share basic and diluted) in Q2 2025, compared to a net loss of $2.6 million in Q2 2024 On April 8, 2025, Southern closed an equity financing raising aggregate gross proceeds of $5.0 million (approximately £3.9 million, C$7.2 million) through the issuance of a total of 102,482,673 new units (see "Shareholders' Equity - Share Capital" in the June 30, 2025 MD&A for full details) On April 8, 2025, Southern converted the remaining convertible debentures in the amount of $3.1 million into 62,759,286 new units and issued 1,627,170new units for all accrued and unpaid interest (see "Liquidity and Capital Resources - Debenture Financing" in the June 30, 2025 MD&A for full details of the conversion) Ian Atkinson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Southern, commented: "Southern continued to build momentum through the second quarter of 2025, supported by firming natural gas prices and the successful completion in late June of the GH LSC 13-13 #2 well in our Gwinville field, marking a key milestone in the redevelopment of our LSC inventory. Early flowback results are highly encouraging and we are particularly pleased to have completed this well at 10% below our original budget, accelerating expected payouts and reinforcing the economic viability of our broader development program. Following our $5.0 million financing in April, Southern resumed field operations with a focus on efficiency and value creation. The GH LSC 13-13 #2 well has already begun contributing significant new volumes with minimal incremental operating cost and benefited from an approximate 17% premium to Henry Hub pricing due to rising Southeast U.S. power demand during the start of summer. This premium underscores the strategic advantage of our geographic positioning and the strengthening macro backdrop. Looking ahead, we expect these new volumes to materially enhance our Q3 2025 cash flow profile. With a constructive outlook for natural gas pricing into the back half of 2025 and into 2026, combined with two additional high-quality DUCs, a deep inventory of drilling opportunities and ongoing capital discipline, Southern is well-positioned to deliver meaningful shareholder value through the remainder of the year and beyond." Financial Highlights Three months ended June 30, Six months ended June 30, (000s, except $ per share) 2025 2024 2025 2024 Petroleum and natural gas sales $ 3,989 $ 3,889 $ 9,110 $ 8,683 Net loss (411 ) (2,622 ) (4,290 ) (5,743 ) Net loss per share Basic (0.00 ) (0.02 ) (0.01 ) (0.03 ) Fully diluted (0.00 ) (0.02 ) (0.01 ) (0.03 ) Adjusted funds flow from operations (1) 592 770 1,221 2,932 Adjusted funds flow from operations per share (1) Basic 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.02 Fully diluted 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.02 Capital expenditures and acquisitions 2,285 60 2,468 329 Weighted average shares outstanding Basic 321,585 166,497 291,452 166,489 Fully diluted 321,585 166,497 291,452 166,489 As at period end Common shares outstanding 336,255 166,497 336,255 166,497 Total assets 53,333 52,269 53,333 59,269 Non-current liabilities 21,040 23,805 21,040 23,805 Net debt (1) $ (19,784 ) $ (24,159 ) $ (19,784 ) $ (24,159 ) Note: See "Reader Advisories - Specified Financial Measures". Operations Update In June 2025, Southern successfully completed the first of its three remaining DUC horizontal wells from the Q1 2023 drilling program, and its first LSC lateral - the GH LSC 13-13 #2 wellbore. Over the first 30 days of production the well averaged natural gas rates of 3.6 MMcfe/d (99% gas), which is an increase of over 100% compared to the average of the original LSC horizontal wells in Gwinville that were drilled and completed by the previous operators. The well has been flowing directly to Company facilities with all gas sold since June 26, 2025. Southern safely and efficiently completed the horizontal lateral with 25 fracture stages, placing over 5.3 million lbs of proppant - a 70% increase in proppant intensity compared to the first-generation completions. The Company implemented targeted stimulation design changes that improved the predictability and speed of the fracture operations, and most importantly, reduced the overall completion cost to $2.2 million which is over 10% below pre-job estimates. Additionally, water flowback rates from the LSC reservoir have been over 70% less than Southern's Upper Selma Chalk horizontal wells, which translates into significant initial operating cost savings of ~ $0.20/Mcfe, further improving capital returns. Southern will continue to monitor both regional natural gas pricing and well performance from the GH LSC 13-13 #2 over the upcoming months before making a decision on the completion timing of the remaining two DUC wells. Southern continues to work with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ("FERC") staff to resolve the ongoing transportation dispute that resulted in the shut-in of approximately 400 boe/d of production from the Mechanicsburg and Greens Creek fields. Based on prescribed FERC resolution timelines, the Company expects the rate determination process to be resolved sometime in Q3 2025, at which point these production volumes will come back on-line. Outlook Southern has taken meaningful steps to strengthen its financial position in 2025, including the successful $5.0 million equity financing in April 2025, conversion of convertible debentures, and restructuring of financial covenants with lender support. These actions, combined with the early success of the GH LSC 13-13 #2 well and two additional DUCs in Gwinville, provide a clear runway for disciplined growth. The Company also continues to benefit from a fixed-price swap of 5,000 MMBtu/d at $3.40/MMBtu through December 2026, offering downside protection. With improved regional pricing and a strengthened financial foundation, Southern is well-positioned to execute its capital program and generate long-term shareholder value. Southern will continue to monitor NYMEX prices and the basis differential prices and is prepared to hedge additional volumes in a tactical manner going forward. We appreciate the continued support of our stakeholders and look forward to providing further updates on our operational progress as we work to drive long-term shareholder value. Qualified Person's Statement Gary McMurren, Chief Operating Officer, who has over 24 years of relevant experience in the oil industry, has approved the technical information contained in this announcement. Mr. McMurren is registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (with distinction) from the University of Alberta. Southern Energy Corp. is a natural gas exploration and production company characterized by a stable, low-decline production base, a significant low-risk drilling inventory and strategic access to premium commodity pricing in North America. Southern has a primary focus on acquiring and developing conventional natural gas and light oil resources in the southeast Gulf States of Mississippi, Louisiana, and East Texas. Our management team has a long and successful history working together and have created significant shareholder value through accretive acquisitions, optimization of existing oil and natural gas fields and the utilization of re-development strategies utilizing horizontal drilling and multi-staged fracture completion techniques. READER ADVISORIES MCFE Disclosure. Natural gas liquids volumes are recorded in barrels of oil (bbl) and are converted to a thousand cubic feet equivalent (Mcfe) using a ratio of six (6) thousand cubic feet to one (1) barrel of oil (bbl). Natural gas volumes recorded in thousand cubic feet (Mcf) are converted to barrels of oil equivalent (boe) using the ratio of six (6) thousand cubic feet to one (1) barrel of oil (bbl). Mcfe and boe may be misleading, particularly if used in isolation. A boe conversion ratio of 6 mcf:1 bbl or a Mcfe conversion ratio of 1 bbl:6 Mcf is based in an energy equivalency conversion method primarily applicable at the burner tip and does not represent a value equivalency at the wellhead. In addition, given that the value ratio based on the current price of oil as compared with natural gas is significantly different from the energy equivalent of six to one, utilizing a boe conversion ratio of 6 Mcf:1 bbl or a Mcfe conversion ratio of 1 bbl:6 Mcf may be misleading as an indication of value. Short Term Results. References in this press release to peak rates, production rates since inception, current production rates, initial 30-day productions rates and other short-term production rates are useful in confirming the presence of hydrocarbons, however such rates are not determinative of the rates at which such wells will commence production and decline thereafter and are not indicative of long-term performance or of ultimate recovery. While encouraging, readers are cautioned not to place reliance on such rates in calculating the aggregate production of Southern. The Company cautions that such results should be considered to be preliminary. Unit Cost Calculation. For the purpose of calculating unit costs, natural gas volumes have been converted to a boe using six thousand cubic feet equal to one barrel unless otherwise stated. A boe conversion ratio of 6:1 is based upon an energy equivalency conversion method primarily applicable at the burner tip and does not represent a value equivalency at the wellhead. This conversion conforms with NI 51-101. Boe may be misleading, particularly if used in isolation. Product Types. Throughout this press release, "crude oil" or "oil" refers to light and medium crude oil product types as defined by NI 51-101. References to "NGLs" throughout this press release comprise pentane, butane, propane, and ethane, being all NGLs as defined by NI 51-101. References to "natural gas" throughout this press release refers to conventional natural gas as defined by NI 51-101. Abbreviations. I've been testing this Bluetooth tracker for a month — and it's the perfect way to keep track of my phone and wallet

Everyone knows how much I love MagSafe wallets. While some of them have integrated trackers that let me keep tabs on my phone and wallet, they're often bulky and use proprietary chargers. That's why I switched back to one of those credit card sized Bluetooth trackers to see if they're any more practical. For more than a month now, I've been using the Rolling Square AirCard Pro to make sure I'm not leaving behind my backpack or iPhone 16 Pro Max. Similar to some of the best key and wallet finders, the AirCard Pro is razor thin and fits inside any ordinary wallet — but it has two features that make it stand above other trackers I've used. Keep track of your wallet or phone with the Rolling Square AirCard Pro, which features 12 months of battery life, wireless charging, and a sturdy design that thin as two credit cards. And of course, you can use the app to track it down in the event it's lost or misplaced. Price check: $40 @ Rolling Square First of all, there are two versions of the AirCard Pro: a white one specifically for Android's Find Hub network and a black one that supports Apple's Find My service. You'll want to make sure to get the right one, but regardless of which you choose, they both let you track their locations and even set them to lost mode. The AirCard Pro is the shape of a credit card, but it's about the same thickness as two normal cards. I know most MagSafe wallets I use allow up to three cards at most, so this would essentially hit that cap — which is why I recommend something like the ESR Aura MagSafe Wallet or Supcase MagFlip Stand because they accommodate more cards. What I love most about the Rolling Square AirCard Pro is its see-through design and sturdy build quality. It's not just some flimsy plastic here, but rather, a CNC machined aluminum frame with epoxy fiberglass resin. There's even an integrated speaker that plays a tone to better track down my phone and wallet if I forgot where I put them last. Obviously, it's been perfect at letting me know where I've left my wallet through the app, but it has two features that make it better. Unlike other wallet trackers that rely on proprietary charging, the AirCard Pro features wireless charging. When I initially got it, I just let it charge on my 3-in-1 MagSafe charger — and that's pretty much all of the charging it needed. That's because more than a month since then, it still shows a full charge. Rolling Square says that the 220 mAh battery inside can last upwards of 12 months. And since it's rechargeable, it's much less of a hassle than other trackers that use watch batteries. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Secondly, the AirCard Pro doubles as my business card because the QR code on the outside has all of my details. You'll have to sign up for a account, which shares my email address, phone number, bio and more. Luckily, you can choose what you want to share — including the ability to redirect the QR code's link to something else. Attach the Rolling Square AirNotch Pro to your keychain so you'll always know where you've left your keys last. You can also use it to track other things, like your pets or luggage, by checking the location of the key tracker on your phone. Price check: $40 @ Rolling Square Due to its credit card size, you can use the AirCard Pro to track just about anything. I've put one in my backpack as well, but I can definitely see it coming in handy if I ever need to fly somewhere and make sure my luggage's getting to my destination. If you need a key tracker, there's also the Rolling Square AirNotch Pro. It does require the batteries to be replaced, but it's rated to last for an even longer 20 months.

Turn Google Drive into your ultimate backup solution — 5 easy steps

Think Google Drive is just for sharing documents? The cloud storage service includes powerful backup capabilities that can protect virtually any file type on your computer. I used to think Google Drive was just for basic document storage, but it has features that can replace dedicated backup services. The platform can automatically sync entire folders from your computer, preview multimedia files in your browser, and provide access to your files from any device. Setting these backup features properly can save money on separate storage services while keeping all your important files safe and accessible. Here's how to use them effectively. The most straightforward way to get files into Google Drive is through the web interface. Open Google Drive in your browser and click the New button in the top-left corner. You'll see options for "File upload" and "Folder upload" that let you select individual files or entire directories from your computer. You can organize uploaded content by hovering over files to access renaming and sharing options, or click the three dots next to any item to find the "Organize" menu for moving files between folders. Google's desktop applications for Windows and macOS offer the most convenient backup experience. After downloading and installing the software, sign into your Google account and you'll be prompted to choose which folders get automatically synced to Google Drive. The desktop app runs in the background and continuously backs up your selected folders to the cloud. You can access these settings anytime by clicking the gear icon and choosing "Preferences." Once files are stored in Google Drive, you can access them from virtually any device. It includes built-in viewers for most common file formats, so you can preview PDFs, videos, images, and documents directly in your browser without downloading them first. Video files get particularly good treatment — double-click any video in Google Drive and a YouTube-style player appears with controls for playback speed, quality, and full-screen viewing. This makes it easy to watch backed-up videos from any computer or mobile device. The Google Drive mobile app for Android and iOS let you back up files directly from your phone or tablet. Tap the plus button to access upload options, then select any file from your device to add to your cloud storage. Mobile backup is particularly useful for photos, videos and documents created on your phone. You can organize these files into folders just like on the desktop, and they'll be accessible from all your other devices once uploaded. Google provides 15GB of free storage shared between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. While this covers basic needs, heavy backup users will likely need a paid Google One plan, which starts at $2 per month for 100GB of storage. If you're running out of storage space, go to your Google Drive and click the "Get more storage" button. Then decide if you'd prefer a monthly or annual plan. To maximize your free storage, focus on backing up your most important files first — documents, photos, and smaller media files. Large video files can quickly consume your allocation, so consider whether cloud backup is necessary for every video file you own.
